Allow to cool at least 10 minutes before removing from pans, then allow to completely cool before stacking and icing the layers — we want a thick and sturdy icing base to stick all of the M&M's onto, not a messy melty one. While the cake was baking andcooling, I went
DIY WEDDING SPARKLERS & FREE PRINTABLE SLEEVE To make the sleeves, I made a design that would measure into a 1.5"x4" strip, then repeated it so 8 strips would print on a single 8.5"x11" page of thick kraft cardstock. I used the simple wording "Let Love Sparkle" as a play off the wedding theme and downloaded a free fancy script font from dafont.com to visually play up the design. DIY VINE SUPPORTS & SWEET POTATO UPDATE DIY Vine Supports & Sweet Potato Update. Last weekend, we mentioned seeing some sweet potato vines that were growing like crazy in our neighborhood — so much so that they needed vertical garden supports. We were inspired by seeing what our plants might soon look like enough that we decided to make some diy supports of our own! HOW TO: DIY ANTIQUED MERCURY MIRROR GLASS The one catch to this tutorial is the fact that you'll really need to look for the specific Krylon looking glass spray.I was able to find it in more than one of our local craft stores, but if you are at a loss, you can find it online. While I haven't actually tried any other sprays, I did read in a few other Pinterest tutorials from people that did who wish in retrospect they had gone with the HOW TO: POLISH SILVER IN A BAKING SODA & SALT BATH Clean dry cloths. Line the bottom of a sink or basin with aluminum foil. It doesn't have to be new foil, this is actually a great way to re-use an old piece up. It also doesn't have to completely cover the base of the container you choose, you'll just want to make sure the pieces you are polishing are able to touch the foil easily. Add saltand

HUNTING SHARK'S TEETH: ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT The way we teach anyone (little or big) to find the teeth is by circling the ones we find first and getting the person to try to find the tooth within the circle. Knowing one is in there helps train your eye to recognize what it's looking for. Just look for the tiny black, slightly shiny, triangle shape and you will find your shark's tooth: AVOCADO UPDATE: MAJOR GROWTH & PINCHING OUT Pinching out simply means cutting back the stem to promote new multiple stem growth in a Y shape. This allows the plant to become shorter and bushier as it grows indoors instead of continuing to grow as a singular tall stem with only a few leaves at the top. To be perfectly honest, the act of "pinching" or "cutting" the stem back hasbeen
THE AEROBIN 400: OUR NEW COMPOSTING SYSTEM The Aerobin 400: Our New Composting System. We've got a new composting system! Some of you may remember our previous DIY compost bin we made right around a year ago at our old house. It consisted of drilling holes throughout a metal trash bin, setting it up atop of some planks and adding/mixing organic matter over time. BEFORE & AFTER: EXPOSING A BRICK CHIMNEY UNDER PLASTER Before & After: Exposing a Brick Chimney Under Plaster Walls. We've sort of been all over the place with house repairs around the upstairs of our home lately — we've been tackling a few plumbing issues, repairing wall damage in two rooms and even opened up the plaster wall in Brandon's room to expose the brick chimney hiding underneath. While HOW TO: GROW A COFFEE PLANT FROM ROASTED BEANS All you have to do is soak the beans of your choice in a shallow dish with a cotton ball, letting the cotton absorb and retain the water, touching the beans at all times: After 5-6 days you'll notice the cotton starting to take on the color and aroma of your blended coffee. Just leave it be, letting the cotton absorb all the liquid in its HOW TO: DIY DOOR SNAKE (DRAFT STOPPER) We've now got what's starting to look like a door snake! I went ahead and made a decorative stitch along the diagonal edge of the short seam. This would also help match the closed end when sewing shut after filling the fabric: Here comes the fun part — filling the snake with rice! We chose rice since it's heavy and acts as a natural insulator. BRIGHT IDEAS: HOW TO MAKE A PENDANT LIGHT Then gently sliced open the outer cord wrapping to expose the two main wires inside: Then stripped about 3/4 of an inch off the outer wrapping of those to really expose the copper wiring: Now we're ready to hang this baby! To swap out the pendant, I first needed to uninstall the current fixture.17 APART

MEET ME AT JOE'S?
Just the other day, Tim and I joked about how nice it would be to walk to Joe's Inn for breakfast — and it was in that moment I realized just how quickly our "normal" can change.read more

ON GIVING GRACE IN 2020 Midway into a bottle of wine on New Year's Eve, Tim and I began thinking back on all the cornerstones we could remember over the last decade — I'd moved back down to Virginia, Brandon had graduated high school (wait, did Stephanie too? Yes, wow and now she's married!), we'd brought Basil home, traveled to Hungary, moved into our current home and so on and so forth well into the night. We'd agreed to go dry for January again this year, so nearing the end of that bottle and indulging _just_ _beyond_ our norm, we got sentimental. We've been together a decade, but longer really. So much has happened over the course of our years together, yet some things stay the same, continuing to strengthen and grow. Love and relationships are funnylike that.

9 MODERN FIREPLACE SCREENS + THE ONE WE'RE COZYING UP TO AT THE RIVERHOUSE
For me, a _real_ fire crackling into the night during the cold season is one of the coziest ways to spend an evening in. We knew we wanted to be able to enjoy burning fires as the weather turned at the river house and recently had the chimney updated to code so we could do exactly that. I even painted the hearth and firebox blackto
give the fireplace a modern update.read more

RECIPE: HOMEMADE MIGNONETTE SAUCE FOR OYSTERS ON THE HALF SHELL Over the weekend we welcomed in the first autumn-like Friday by picking up a box of our favorite oystersand lighting up
the outdoor brick fireplace at the river housefor a small
roast. Tim prepared an array of toppings that we spread out on the picnic table and we indulged in oysters on the half shell, roasted oysters, Oysters Rockefeller and my personal favorite — fresh oysters with a homemade mignonette sauce. The sauce is quick to make with just 6 ingredients and fool-proof for serving with chilled oysters — recipe below!read more

OUR BABY LIBRARY, A MODERN RUG TO EASE MY JOINTS + THE NEWBORN ARRIVAL GIFT IDEA I'M ADOPTING_
_ _Today's post is in partnership with Rugs USA._
My stepdaughter, a special education teacher specializing in reading & writing, recently told us that reading to a baby is one of the best gifts you can give a child. She'd made the remark after hearing we'd read to Etta every night while I was pregnant. We'd done it because we'd heard that babies can hear your voice in utero and may even recognize a familiar book once born. We liked the idea of her knowing our voices and having a book we could read early on that may feel familiar. Turns out, there are a whole host of other benefitsto reading in
infancy as well!
