Thu, 06/03/2021 - 4:00pm (EDT) COMMUNITY RALLIED AROUND BRAEDEN'S FAMILY AS HE FOUGHT “Hey, Braeden, we need to go.” Little did 12-year-old Braden understand that he was headed towards hospital admission. Earlier that day, Braden nearly passed out on the basketball court. He was a happy, athletic child, who excelled at several sports. His mom, Becki, took him for blood work. Later, Braeden’s parents heard from the doctor’s office: take him to the Emergency Department now. COVID-19 UPDATE: BONE MARROW FAILURE AND INFECTIOUS Dr. DeZern and Dr. Dioverti address the concerns of bone marrow failure disease patients and their caregivers and review the precautions they should be taking to protect their health. They also answer participant questions and answers. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO LIVE? How long do I have to live? This is most people’s first question, along with “what can I expect to happen.” The doctor’s answer is called a prognosis (an educated guess about the likely course of your disease and how long you might live). Because each person is unique, and each person’s disease is different, a prognosis can be difficultto make.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LOW BLOOD COUNTS? The symptoms of bone marrow failure diseases like aplastic anemia, MDS and PNH are caused by low blood counts. The specific symptoms depend on which type of blood cell is affected. Read the section below to see the symptoms for each type of cell. You may have many of these symptoms or just one or two of them. And you may get a new symptom at any point in the course of your illness. FATIGUE | APLASTIC ANEMIA & MDS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION What fatigue is (and isn’t) Most patients who are diagnosed with a bone marrow failure disease say they experience fatigue and one recent study reported that more than 90 percent of patients with MDS experience excessive, ongoing fatigue. The fatigue experienced by patients is a persistent sense of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive tiredness or exhaustion that is not related to recent TREATMENT OF MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROMES IN ELDERLY PATIENTS Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal neoplasms with the median age at diagnosis being in the seventh decade. If left untreated, the disease progresses to acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML). There are many options for the management of MDS, but the only potentially curative treatment is allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), which TARGETING TP53 MUTATIONS IN MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROMES Mutations in TP53 are observed in ∼20% of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), with increased frequency seen in patients with a complex karyotype and cases of therapy-related MDS. TP53 mutations represent perhaps the single greatest negative prognostic indicator in MDS. Inferior outcomes are demonstrated with all approved treatment approaches, althoughBRENDAN BIETRY

IS BLOOD TRANSFUSION SAFE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC The rapid spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has challenged healthcare systems to re-organize the management of patients in a short period. The causative pathogen of this pandemic is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), one of seven coronaviruses that can be found in humans. It is a rapidly mutating, enveloped, ssRNA, beta-coronavirus. EXERCISE | APLASTIC ANEMIA & MDS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION Be active at least thirty minutes every day. Brisk walking is a great way to stay active and it's easy to do 10 minutes at a time. Increase your daily activity when you become more fit. Try 60 minutes or more of moderate exercise or 30 minutes of vigorous activity. Limit sedentary habits such as watching television, playing video games, or HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO LIVE? AZACITIDINE OR DECITABINE WITH VENETOCLAX FOR ACUTE This phase II trial evaluates the effect of azacitidine or decitabine and venetoclax in treating patients with acute myeloid leukemia that has not been treated before (treatment naive) or has come back (relapsed). Chemotherapy drugs, such as azacitidine, decitabine, and venetoclax, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from LIVING WITH A PEDIATRIC BONE MARROW FAILURE DISEASE: A Patient panel discussions are a chance to meet some of the inspiring patients, caregivers and parents who are dealing with a bone marrow failure disease.
