About Us. ABOMS is the certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States and is recognized and approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American DentalAssociation.

The term “maxillofacial” refers to the anatomic area of the jaws and face. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. ORAL CERTIFYING EXAMINATION Taking the OCE. The second step to becoming a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is taking the Oral Certifying Examination (OCE). Once a Candidate has successfully completed their Qualifying Examination (QE), they are eligible to begin their application for the OCE. Due to the pandemic, the ABOMS Board of Directors made the conscious decision to postpone the 2021 Oral Certifying Examination (OCE). The examination was originally scheduled to be held in Raleigh, NC on February 22-26, 2021 and is now postponed to August 23-27, 2021. The Board realizes this change may affect DIPLOMATES OF THE BOARD Diplomates of ABOMS Commitment to Lifelong Learning, Knowledge and Growth. Diplomates of the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) are committed to lifelong learning, keeping current in knowledge and skills, and practicing in a safe and contemporary manner.ABOMS assures our Diplomates' commitment to these goals through the Certification Maintenance process. VERIFICATION OF BOARD STATUS Active. A Diplomate who is actively engaged in the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery or receives monetary remuneration by virtue of being an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and is currently in good standing with ABOMS. QUALIFYING EXAMINATION The QE is a secure, valid computer-based examination administered to Board applicants to test their knowledge in central principles of the oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) specialty. The ABOMS CM process is not affected by COVID-19, as it is a process that is done completely online and at your own computer and on your own time throughout the year. ABOMS has eliminated the Recertification Examination that was done in person, with the last administration having been in 2019. All Diplomates with time-limited certificates are BECOME A BOARD CERTIFIED DOCTOR The Qualifying Exam is a computer-based examination designed to test competency in the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty. The first step in the ABOMS Board Certification process, this examination contains 300 questions covering 10 subject areas.
