ANAEMIA: UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF A RARE INHERITED Congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia type 1 (CDA-1) is a rare, inherited type of anaemia. The condition is usually diagnosed in childhood and can seriously affect a child’s everyday life. BLINDNESS & VISION PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN Retinopathy of prematurity – or ROP – is a major cause of vision loss and blindness in young children. Babies who are born very prematurely, whose birth weight is very low, are most at risk. Children born with a rare illness called brittle cornea syndrome have fragile eyes which puts them at risk of severe vision problems andeven blindness.
TECHNOLOGY & SLEEP IMPACT ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY Obesity puts children at risk of eventually developing serious, long-term health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, breathing disorders during sleep and some cancers. Many obese children grow into overweight adults, when ongoing weight problems can shorten life expectancy. 2,3. Obesity can also have a significant impact on a TREATING CHILDREN WITH EPILEPSY AND UNCONTROLLED SEIZURES Treating children with epilepsy and uncontrolled seizures. Action funding has enabled researchers to develop a new technique to help some children with epilepsy, which uses new ways of electrically stimulating different parts of the brain. Over 60,000 children and teenagers aged 18 and under have epilepsy in the UK. BIRTH ASPHYXIA LONG TERM EFFECTS Birth asphyxia – a lack of oxygen and/or a reduced blood supply to babies’ brains around the time of birth – can have terrible consequences, including a brain injury called hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). Tragically, babies with this condition can lose their lives or be left with long-term complications, like cerebralpalsy.
