The research shows that they’ve meant a reduction of between 9,000 and 37,000 Covid19 cases up to 31 July, so the lockdowns have probably saved between 100 and 500 lives that would have been lost without them. And that’s just so far. One very useful piece of research that came out this week came from the Burnet Institute in Victoria is anJENNIFER LANG

REFLECTIONS ON COVID19 The World in Data Covid19 information is tracking the doubling rate of cases of Covid19 and deaths from Covid19. The calculation of the number of cases of Covid19 depends on testing rates (which have been varying by time and by country) and even with perfect testing, capture an event that happened 4 days to 2 weeks before the positive test. In Australia, this graph, which comes from last week’s ABS analysis, shows the shocking difference between rates of imprisonment in Australia between Indigenous people and the totals for all Australians. The rates are per adult population, and show that in 2020, 4.7% of Indigenous men were incarcerated, compared with 0.4% ofall men.
STATISTICS ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND RAPE So its time to look at some statistics. There are around 20 million people in Australia over the age of 15. In the last 12 months approximately 1.6 million women and 840,000 men – nearly 2.5 million people – have experienced sexual harassment of any kind. Included in this are around 148,000 women and 57,000 men who were sexuallyassaulted

SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS AND ABORIGINAL STUDENTS The long suspensions were for an average of 11 days. For aboriginal students, the equivalent numbers are 12.1% of students having at least one short suspension, and 5.9% of students having at least one long suspension. So despite making up 7% of the student population, aboriginal students made up about a quarter of the suspended studentpopulation.

ABOUT – ACTUARIAL EYE My name is Jennifer Lang. I am an actuary and non executive director, working in financial services in Sydney, Australia. This blog brings actuarial thinking to a wider set of problems – plus LIFE – ACTUARIAL EYE Six weeks ago, I posted about the Coronavirus in China. Reading that blogpost now seems like reading something I wrote years ago. Since then, I’ve been reading obsessively and contributed a bit in the background to some of the Actuaries Institute material, and we now have more than 1,000 cases in Australia (there were 15 when I wrote the original blog post). SOME ANALYSIS ON COVID19 VACCINATIONS IN AUSTRALIA? SADLY But Australia has over 15% partially or fully vaccinated against 11% for the world. There’s certainly a narrative that we are ‘slow’ but the reality is there are some nations, mostly with very high numbers of deaths, that are way ahead in the rollout, Australia somewhere in the middle, and a large number of countries behind. Thanks Jennifer as always for your thoughts. Right now it feels nations are in a phase of “get an effective vaccine which works as quickly as possible” rather than discussing “which one would be HOW DO WE TRADE OFF INDIVIDUAL RISKS AND COLLECTIVE But, the faster we are all vaccinated, the faster we can return to “global life”. i would suggest that if we can get to a high proportion vaccinated earlierJENNIFER LANG

CLIMATE CHANGE AND EXTREMESBY JENNIFER LANG
• JANUARY 3,
2020 • 2 COMMENTS Ten years ago, after the Victorian bushfires (which were the worst ever loss of life in bushfires in Australia) I wrote about climate change causing much more frequent weather extremes. Those bushfires burnt 450,000 hectares, mostly over two terrifying days in February 2009. So far this season, we have seen at least ten times that much burnt land in Australia, with the recent few days being particularly terrifying over much of the eastern coast. Much has been written about the bushfires. Rather than rehashing it all, I wanted to remind my readers about the effect of climate change on extremes, and how it is not necessarily intuitive. Last week Australia had its hottest ever day two days in a row (narrowly missing three days in a row, because the third day was only the second hottest ever recorded). Australians, at least, are coming to understand that climate change creates biggerchange…
