RECURRENT TRAINING: KEEPING PILOTS QUALIFIED Airline pilots spend a few days each year in recurrent training to brush up on the skills and knowledge needed to fly transport aircraft. FLYING THE NORTH ATLANTIC TRACKS Each day, over 2000 aircraft fly across the Atlantic. Find out how pilots navigate and communicate on the North Atlantic Tracks! ATIS: AUTOMATIC TERMINAL INFORMATION SERVICE Chicago, Van Nuys, New York, and San Francisco/Oakland where the first airports to test the new system called ATIS – Automatic Terminal Information Service. The idea was simple. Each hour, a controller records the current airport conditions. The recording is broadcast on a loop using local navigation aids (usually a VOR). YOU MIGHT BE A CARGO PILOT... Did you know? If an aircraft or ship has an urgent problem, the internationally recognized radio call is “Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan.”If an aircraft has a life-threatening emergency, the crew broadcasts “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.” Pan-Pan and Mayday get the attention of others on the frequency so the crew can explain the problem and get the assistance they need. HOW TO STOP A 400 TON AIRLINER Brakes – NOT the brakes on your dad’s old Plymouth. The most important system we use to stop the aircraft are the wheel brakes.
