It’s not often you get a group of students aged 17 to 70 in the same classroom. But a course at Adelaide’s Bagster Road Community Centre is attracting people from all walks of life. What they all have in common is a DIVING WITH A DISABILITY A scuba diving training program is changing lives for people with disabilities who are swapping wheelchairs for water. Mark Slingo had just qualified as a diving instructor in Thailand when he had a fall from a balcony that left him a paraplegic. ‘My boss said “Why don’t you come back to work to see if you can still teach?” – ever since then I’ve been trying to get more people in FIGHTING FOR BETTER WORKPLACE LITERACY AND NUMERACY Call for a National Strategy In a statement of collaboration released today, the Australian Industry Group has committed to work together with Adult Learning Australia, The Australian Council for Adult Literacy, Community Colleges Australia and the Reading and Writing Hotline to push for a new national policy and to work with industry to improve workplace literacy and numeracy practice. INDIGENOUS LEARNINGS Indigenous learnings. Assessing viability. CUBAN LITERACY PROGRAM COMES TO INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS An exciting new model of adult literacy teaching for Aboriginal students is being piloted in Wilcannia NSW. The pilot will utilise an internationally recognised mass literacy campaign model not previously used in Australia. The Yo!
