A joint effort of the local chamber of commerce, garden club and numerous service organizations raised more than $11,000 to bring a giant steel star and Blue Star Memorial sign to Chief Alex Park alongside the Old Glenn Highway. The 15-by-15-foot steel star was filled with red, white and blue flowers Tuesday. IN THE GARDEN: SHADE LOVING PERENNIAL PLANTS FOR ALASKA Finding the plants that grow well in shade can be challenging but is not impossible. There are many perennials that will grow nicely for us in the shade and this list is not exhaustive. Our particular lot has many birch trees and has posed a challenge to grow plants that need more light and it has become clear to me that shade plants love it here. It has taken a while to find the right fit of IN THE GARDEN: GROWING LILACS When choosing a shrub for your garden, never pick one unless you are absolutely sure that it is resistant to our winter cold and hardy for this area. We are in a zone 3 and many of the box stores do sell plants that are not hardy outside here in the winter and they will die. Save your money and get a shrub that will survive and thrive here. One such shrub is Syringa Vulgaris IN THE GARDEN: GROWING DAHLIAS IN ALASKA The garage is a perfect place on the floor. In the spring, you can divide your tubers and have more dahlias and share with a friend. You will need to have one stem and it will need to have an eye in it. The new growth will come from the eye until roots form. ARMY’S ‘SPARTAN’ BRIGADE GETS A NEW LEADER Fit and ready for action, the Army’s only airborne brigade in the Pacific now has a new leader. Col. Paul Larson assumed command of the Army’s 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division during a ceremony Friday, March 24 on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson. Larson takes over from Col. Scott Green, who was credited with making MOUNTAIN ECHOES: ANNUAL GUNSIGHT MOUNTAIN TREK NEVER SEEMS After more than three hours of steady climbing, I crested the ridge at 6,000 feet and looked over the other side, to the north. The iron-mineralized mountain slopes, composed of what geologists call gypsiferous rock, were bright orange in the mid-afternoon sun. The gray, rocky ground ahead of me seemed to be moving. Municipal offices in the Eagle River Town Center Building have reopened after the building was declared safe by the State Fire Marshall’s office. The south end of the building had been closed since May 10 when possible earthquake damage was uncovered. LOCAL MEN UNABLE TO OUTRUN POLICE OFFICERS Michlig was taken to jail on an outstanding warrant and additionally charged with resisting arrest. On June 14 at around 3:19 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for speeding and having no licence plates. Police said the driver, Nicholas A. Native of Europe and found in 1868 in New York, probably brought by settlers. When crushed, this plant exudes astrong garlic odor.

A joint effort of the local chamber of commerce, garden club and numerous service organizations raised more than $11,000 to bring a giant steel star and Blue Star Memorial sign to Chief Alex Park alongside the Old Glenn Highway. The 15-by-15-foot steel star was filled with red, white and blue flowers Tuesday. IN THE GARDEN: GROWING DAHLIAS IN ALASKA The garage is a perfect place on the floor. Our particular lot has many birch trees and has posed a challenge to grow plants that need more light and it has become clear to me that shade plants love it here.
