ROCKABILLY DOUBLE STOPS In this lesson I take you through a complete rockabilly-style solo played entirely using double stops. I’ve written it out in music and tab below. I’ve put together a quick backing track for you to jam along to. Practice the solo as as written and why not try making up some similar ideas of BUILDING A BLUES SOLO This solo gives you an example of how a simple lick or motif can be used as the basis for an entire 12 bar chorus of the blues. If you ever feel like your solos are just a string of unconnected licks then this approach is a really good way of adding a bit of a ‘storyline’ to your soloing. ROSE ROOM BY CHARLIE CHRISTIAN Here’s my take on one of the all-time great guitar solos. Music & Tab I’ve transcribed the solo below. Here I’ve written out the F major scale and its related modes with 3 notes on each string, which divides the neck up into 7 overlapping areas. I’ve chosen to name each pattern according to the mode generated when playing it from THE MINOR PENTATONIC SCALE Every guitarist needs to know the minor pentatonic scale. No matter what kind of music you’re into, this scale will come in useful. UNLOCK THE FRETBOARD USING OCTAVE SHAPES, PART 1 For me, the simplest way of understanding the fretboard is through the use of octave shapes. Using this method you are forced to see the logic of the way the notes are arranged on the guitar in a way that isn’t always as apparent with other methods, like the commonly usedCAGED system.
