Will the Mediterranean Sea survive the summer season? ARTE TV Documentary (in French) Fragment Τhis fragment of the French ARTE documentary, in cooperation with Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, highlights the exploding maritime traffic around the Greek Islands during the summer season. Traffic includes cargos, ferries and pleasure boats, as well as the severe consequences boat traffic might involve: introduction of invasive species, marine mammal collisions, devastating pollution in case of an accident, all of these threatening the natural ecosystembalance.
While home to 10% of the planet's biodiversity, there are many signs that this semi-enclosed sea is at the edge of burn-out. Population pressure, mass tourism, increased ship traffic, concreting and industrial facilities are some of the main threats to the quality of its waters, which take at least ten years to regenerate, but also to the marine fauna, disappearing little by little off the coasts. This French ARTE documentary puts into perspective the ecological stakes and the economic battles of entrepreneurs, experts, elected representatives, local populations and NGOs. Focusing on the Aegean Sea, between 37”33 and 49”00 in the video, it highlights, with the contribution of Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, the exploding maritime traffic around the Greek Islands during the summer season: cargos, ferries and pleasure boats, as well as the severe consequences boat traffic might involve: introduction of invasive species, marine mammal collisions, devastating pollution in case of an accident, all of these threatening the natural ecosystem balance.
Virginijus Sinkevičius.

Archipelagos - Institute of Marine Conservation LIFO: Archipelagos - Institute of Marine Conservation

#Archipelagos #wearearchipelagos #savetheaegean #greece #researchforconservation__ 310

Archipelagos - Institute of Marine Conservation
