Homemade portable deep fryer Part 1. My mother informed me that the family reunion was approaching this year and asked if I'd help my uncle and cousin with the grilling. The idea of flipping burgers wasn't the most appealing and besides a guy like me likes to "crank things up" a few degrees of excitement.MIXING GREENSAND
Mixing molding sand (greensand) The basis for molding sand is clean silica sand. The type used to mix concrete is just fine. However it must be sifted through the finest window screen you can find because there are a lot of large pieces in it. The finer (smaller grain size) your sand the smoother the surface and better the detail of yourcastings.
COMMON HOBBY FOUNDRY QUESTIONS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) This list of questions are some which are frequently asked in e-mail and on the forum.Hopefully this list will save time for everyone especially those just starting out in metalcasting. General questionsIRON CASTINGS
Here we go again with a new crucible load of iron. These are some chunks from the metal lathe I destroyed. This crucible is the same crucible I used back in 2005 for the brass casting. A SIMPLE HOMEMADE PROPANE BURNER Just a 7" long piece of 3/4" steel pipe with a row of 3/8 inch holes drilled in it (the holes extend through both sides of the pipe). The fuel pipe is 1/8" steel pipe with a #57 hole drilled in the center. The #57 drill bit is the #57 drill bit is .0430 inches diameter. In metric it is 1.092200 millimeter diameter here's a picture next to a A HOMEMADE "BLAST" FURNACE 2 Melting iron with a small cupola furnace. Cupola furnace built on the cheapPossibly too cheap. I don't have much confidence in this cupola, actually it's the fuel I don't have much confidence in. I find it hard to imagine that I'll be able to melt iron and keep a pool of it molten until each draining of the furnace. A HOMEMADE WASTE OIL BURNER Used cooking oil shows aluminum who the boss is! This website is sponsored in part by America's waste oil producers. No matter how nice your propane burner is, propane is still very expensive is many parts of the U.S.A. (and other parts of the world) It cost me $21.00 last time I got a refill on my barbecue sized tank in 2004 (up from $17.00in 2003).

I can melt metal in my bedroom on nights when I can't sleep (definitely joking)! HOMEMADE STEEL/IRON CRUCIBLES Homemade iron crucibles. Even though not everyone has access to a welder I figured you might still like to look at how I and probably many other home foundry owners make iron crucibles.I guess homemade clay crucibles are next MELTING IRON WITH WASTE OIL CAST IRON falls to my foundry's reign! Not even iron can withstand my metal manipulating might! For awhile I've considered casting iron to be the "holy grail" of backyard metalcasting. If you can successfully melt and cast iron then you've really developed your foundry.HOMEMADE DEEP FRYER
Homemade portable deep fryer Part 1. My mother informed me that the family reunion was approaching this year and asked if I'd help my uncle and cousin with the grilling. The idea of flipping burgers wasn't the most appealing and besides a guy like me likes to "crank things up" a few degrees of excitement. FORGE BUILT FROM A CAR WHEEL This is the car wheel I decided to make the forge out of. It has a fairly nice internal volume for holding the fuel and the holes in theface (which will
IRON CASTINGS
Here we go again with a new crucible load of iron. These are some chunks from the metal lathe I destroyed. This crucible is the same crucible I used back in 2005 for the brass casting. COMMON HOBBY FOUNDRY QUESTIONS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) This list of questions are some which are frequently asked in e-mail and on the forum.Hopefully this list will save time for everyone especially those just starting out in metalcasting. General questions A HOMEMADE "BLAST" FURNACE 2 Melting iron with a small cupola furnace. Cupola furnace built on the cheapPossibly too cheap. I don't have much confidence in this cupola, actually it's the fuel I don't have much confidence in. I find it hard to imagine that I'll be able to melt iron and keep a pool of it molten until each draining of the furnace. A SIMPLE HOMEMADE PROPANE BURNER Oliver-upwind propane burner Ok, maybe it's a pat on the back to name it after myself but oh-well :-D. This small propane burner is the result of my experiments with simplifying the regular "Reil burner."MIXING GREENSAND
Mixing molding sand (greensand) Based on some of the e-mails I get there are plenty of people having trouble with their molding sand.I put this page together to illustrate just how easy it is to make a small batch of greensand for your personal foundry.

Hefty Harriette It was time to "crank it up a few degrees" literally and figuratively and build a big furnace capable of withstanding repeated iron melts. Harriette was born of this desire and she's quite a looker! ------------------------- Coffee can furnace Even a large coffee can is suitable for building a simple gas fired furnace. ------------------------- The "2 bucks" furnace Unfortunately "2 bucks" isn't the cost of building the furnace! It refers to the design based on 2 buckets. It burns propane and a good scrounger can build it forunder 10 bucks!

------------------------- Chimney pipe furnace I used this furnace for over a year. The internal chamber was made from a clay chimney flue pipe. So if people say that it won't work (as I've read on "rec.crafts.metalworking") tell them to SHUT UP with their THEORIES because it works and works well! ------------------------- Breaking metal in a barbecue No a barbecue grill is not a furnace but when it comes to breaking up/down large pieces of aluminum it's close enough. Aluminum flask building Most hobbyists build their flasks from wood. I crank it up a few degrees and make mine from aluminum. ------------------------- Homemade aluminum pulleys It feels great to have an essentially unlimited supply of pulleys. I READ ALL OF THEM (unless I mistake the e-mail title as junkmail or "spam") BUT I ONLY RESPOND TO ABOUT 30% OF THEM. It's usually nothing personal against the sender, I just sometimes don't feel like answering all those e-mails! So for questions I have put together this Frequently Asked Questions page. Hopefully it'll answer your question(s) with no need to e-mail them to me. Also the metalcasting message board is a "happening spot" and good for getting answers to questions. PROPANE & MAPP® GAS FUEL GENERAL MOLDING AND CASTING Mapp® gas burner I rigged up a burner which can be fueled by disposable Mapp gas or propane cannisters. Even a barbeque grill type tank with LOW pressure regulator! ------------------------- "Forced air" burners An experiment using air blowers on gas burners. ------------------------- Rigging a propane system After 3 years of using a charcoal fired furnace I've finally advanced to propane. Here's how Ihooked up the rig.
------------------------- Homebuilt propane burners! Charcoal has been really good to me, but I had to move on to propane. From common plumbing parts you can build burners to melt any metal from lead toiron.
------------------------- Propane Vs. Charcoal I made a non-biased comparison between the two furnace fuels to see which is better. ------------------------- Sheet metal flares If you want to use your burner outside the furnace you'll probably need a flare.
