PAC-12 CANCELS COLORADO-SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GAME * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 Southern California’s home game against Colorado for Saturday has been canceled, the conference announced Thursday. The Trojans did not meet the minimum number of scholarship players available at a specific position under the Pac-12’s policy. The game will be declared a no contest. “Not contesting this game is very disappointing to our student-athletes and our fans,” the conference said in its statement announcing the cancellation. “While all of us want to see our football student-athletes on the field competing, our number one priority must continue to be the health and safety of all those connected to Pac-12 football programs.” The game was the 14th to be canceled or postponed this week. It's the third in the Pac-12, joining the Apple Cup, between Washington and Washington State, and the Utah-Arizona State game. Colorado will instead host San Diego State on Saturday (5 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network). The Aztecs' game against Fresno State was canceledearlier.
Utah will visit Washington Saturday in a newly scheduled game. Source: Read Full Article * Tags American foot, College Football

NAPOLI 2-0 RIJEKA: SERIE A CLUB WIN EMOTIONAL FIRST MATCH AFTER DIEGOMARADONA’S DEATH
* Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 On an emotionally-charged evening, the Napoli team took the field for the Europa League game wearing number 10 shirts with Maradona’s name emblazoned on the back Friday 27 November 2020 00:32, UK Napoli overcame Croatian side Rijeka 2-0 on Thursday in their first match since the death of Diego Maradona, the Italian club’s greatest and most popular player. On an emotionally-charged evening, the Napoli team took the field for the Europa League game wearing number 10 shirts with Maradona’s name emblazoned on the back, while a photograph of the Argentine idol stared down from the electronic scoreboard. Banners showing images of Maradona, who led Napoli to two Serie A titles during seven extraordinary seasons at the club in the 1980s, were placed around the San Paolo stadium, which was eerily empty and quiet due to COVID-19 regulations. “From yesterday, when we went to the hotel, you could sense that a different mood had come over the city,” Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso said. “It was a great loss, but Diego will never die. He is a legend, from another planet.” Gattuso had known Maradona personally.TRENDING
* DIEGO MARADONA: THE HAND OF GOD AND THE FEET OF GOLD * DIEGO MARADONA: THE GENIUS AND THE CONTROVERSY * WORLD MOURNS MARADONA – REACTION & TRIBUTES “I have so many good memories, I had the chance to speak to him many times,” he said. “He has died but his spirit lives on. He made mistakes in his private life but he will always be alive because of what he has achieved.” Although spectators were not allowed into the ground itself, however, fans gathered outside the stadium chanting “Diego, Diego” andother anthems.
Hundreds of blue and white Napoli scarves were tied to railings outside the stadium, and flowers, children’s pictures, church candles and even a bottle of wine were laid out along the pavement ina makeshift shrine.
Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 60. Once the game started, Napoli dominated and created several chances before Rijeka full-back Armando Anastasio, under pressure from Matteo Politano, turned Piotr Zielinski’s shot into his own net five minutes before half-time. Hirving Lozano made the result safe in the 75th minute, controlling Lorenzo Insigne’s pass before slotting the ball past Ivan Nevistic to leave Napoli top of Group F with nine points from four games, two ahead of AZ Alkmaar and Real Sociedad. Politano said it was hard to concentrate on the game. “It is a sad day and it was difficult to go onto the pitch in the right frame of mind,” he said. “It’s a difficult moment but we have to be strong so we can win a trophy and dedicate it toMaradona.”

THE INCREDIBLE 35-BALL TON THAT ALMOST SAW WALLABY CHASE BAGGY GREEN * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 Before Harry Wilson was touted as a future captain of the Wallabies, he dreamed of wearing a baggy green. After watching his match-winning 35-ball century while playing for Brisbane GPS school Gregory Terrace's 1st XI in 2017, it's not a stretch to imagine the towering Wallabies back-rower as a brute withbat in hand.
Harry Wilson in action for the Wallabies against Argentina in Newcastle last week.Credit:Getty "I absolutely love cricket but I was always a bit different to most players. I guess because of my footy background. "I didn't want to be out there all day blocking. I was quite anattacking batsman.
"It went in stages. The coaches would always want me to tone it down and I would always be in trouble if I was caught on the boundary. "By the time I got to year 12 I thought stuff it, I'm just going to dowhat I want."
The part of Wilson that wondered what might have been had he pursued a career in cricket has been erased by a whirlwind year with both theReds and Wallabies.
Wilson's powerful running game and skilful offload ability has seen him start every Test of the Dave Rennie era – a feat he never could have envisaged while sweating out a pre-season under the eye of Brad Thorn this time last year. "I felt the more footy I've played in Super, the more I've felt comfortable with my teammates and this step up with Test footy was a lot more physical, fast and no where near as much room for error as you have in Super," he said. "Your game lifts because you're around better players. "This year, it's been awesome. I've loved every moment of it and I'm pretty stoked to have a few more opportunities this year to finish it the right way. Hopefully with a bit of silverware. "It's been a whirlwind year but I've absolutely loved it and I wouldn't trade it for anything."SPORT NEWSLETTER

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM NFL THANKSGIVING DOUBLEHEADER * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 _As NFL players and fans alike give thanks, four teams spent part of Thanksgiving day battling it out for a chance to improve their place in the standings. Here’s what we learned:_ HOUSTON TEXANS 41, DETROIT LIONS 25 1. Deshaun Watson continues to carry the Houston Texans (4-7) with breathtaking throws and near impeccable play. The quarterback divebombed a lousy Lions defense with big plays, used his magic to escape pressure and fired lasers all over the field. Watson picked apart Detroit like the last bits of meat on a Thanksgiving bird. Watson tossed four TDs, two over 25 air-yards, and completed 17 of 25 passes for 318 yards and a 150.4 passer rating. Injuries to Randall Cobb and Kenny Stills didn’t come into play, with Watson leaning on Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks. Fuller tortured Lions corners with his speed, catching six passes for a whopping 171 yards and two TDs. The final Texans TD was a wonderful play call by OC Tim Kelly. An elongated flea-flicker that got Fuller wide open, without a defender within 20 yards, injected some pizzazz into a game that felt like it was inoculated with tryptophan early in the contest. Not much separates the overall rosters in Thursday’s matchup, except one team has Watson, and the other does not. A year in which Watson is playing much better than his team’s four wins suggest, the QB reminded a national audience he’s one of the best signal-callers in the NFL. Deshaun Watson hits Will Fuller on a Go route for a 40-yard TD, Fuller's 5th TD reception on a go route this season (most in NFL). Watson on Vertical Routes (Go, Post & Corner) > Today: 6/7, 168 yards, 2 TD#HOUvsDET | #WeAreTexans | Powered by @awscloud pic.twitter.com/tPknJqXusX 2. Both clubs got off to a sloppy start, looking every bit of cellar-dwellers in a sleepwalking first half. The Lions, in particular, were careless with the football, turning it over on three straight possessions following an opening-drive score. Fortunately for Detroit, Houston was also shooting itself in the foot, with one fumble of its own and a cavalcade of penalties. In the first two quarters, the Texans committed eight penalties for 65 yards. The slapdash first half included a combined four turnovers, 95 yards in penalties, a missed PAT and a kickoff out of bounds and ended with poor clock management. The silver lining for Houston was J.J. Watt’s pick-6 of Matthew Stafford early in the first quarter. The former DPOY had four batted balls last week. Thursday, he held onto one and got his team on the board as the offense scuttled early. 3. The Lions offense couldn’t take advantage of a defense that struggled all year. Houston entered last in the NFL at creating turnovers. Detroit, in a giving mood, coughed it up three times. Insistent upon establishing the run against the league’s worst run defense, the Lions couldn’t get on track early, earning just 2.5 yards per carry on 17 first-half totes. To open the third quarter, Detroit finally took advantage of the Texans’ bad run D, sticking to the ground on 10 straight plays to open the half while trailing by nine points. Emblematic of the Lions issues, a 14-play drive took over half of the quarter but ended with a field goal. Outside of a few nice plays to tight end T.J. Hockenson, the Detroit offense was an inconsistent bore for much of the afternoon. 4. The Lions lost to a three-win team for the second straight week. Matt Patricia is staring at the end of the line. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday morning that the Thanksgiving game loomed large for the coach’s future in Detroit. Consider it an abject failure. The Lions coach managed the game poorly, his defense is atrocious, and the entire team sleepwalked much of the contest. Detroit ownership put out a mandate that the team needed to be competitive in December in order for the brass to keep their jobs in 2021. Heading into last week, Patricia’s team had a chance to make a run and at least remain in the hunt for the playoffs. Instead, his club laid back-to-back rotten eggs. Getting lambasted by a fellow bad team on a national stage could be the final nail that ends Patricia’s tenure in Detroit._— Kevin Patra_

DIEGO MARADONA: JOSE MOURINHO PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE TWO SIDES OF HIS FORMER FRIEND AFTER HIS PASSING * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 Jose Mourinho revealed the private side of Diego Maradona who would “call me after my big defeats, but never my victories” following the Argentina legend’s passing. Maradona, one of the greatest players of all time, died at the age of 60 on Wednesday and Mourinho, who knew the World Cup winner well, paid tribute to his friend after Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Ludogorets in the Europa League 24 hours after he passed away. “Maradona the world knows, the world never forgets,” he said. “I made sure that my son knows a lot about him, even being born after he was a player. I know my son will make sure when he is a father he will not let his kids forget. “It was a bit similar with Di Stefano; I never saw him play football, but my dad made sure I knew a lot about him. With these generations, we have players of our generations, and in my generation was what everybody knows.” * DIEGO MARADONA: THE HAND OF GOD AND THE FEET OF GOLD * DIEGO MARADONA: THE GENIUS AND THE CONTROVERSY * WORLD MOURNS MARADONA – REACTION & TRIBUTES “Then there’s Diego the guy. That one, I miss. I feel sorry that I didn’t spend more time with him, I would have loved to. I think his family, his friends and colleagues are very privileged to know him well and spend time with him.TRENDING
“I know him well enough and in my big defeats, he would always call me. In my big victories, never. But I will miss Diego, and I am very sad but I have a smile because with him, every minute I spent with himwas to laugh.”
MOURINHO: NINE POINTS NOT ‘JOB DONE’ Mourinho suggested racking up a third win from four Europa League group stage games would have normally been enough to see his side through to the knockout stages but pointed to the form of Thursday’s opponents – who have now lost all four of their group matches – as a reason why it would not be enough for his side. “Normally nine points would be job done, but it’s not done,” he told _BT Sport_. “You need a result, but if you can finish first, we are going to try. Today it was important we made lots of changes, it was important to take it seriously, and it was good. * HOW THE TEAMS LINED UP | MATCH STATS * TOTTENHAM 4-0 LUDOGORETS – MATCH REPORT “Every game is important, we don’t look to a certain competition, we look to game after game. To play the same players is not good for their condition, or the mentality of the ones who are not playing. If you work hard, you deserve to play, I can only start 11 but I want to give chances to everybody. “I’m happy for them, some players had really nice performances, Japhet Tanganga had his first match after a long injury, it was a nice opportunity for the kids to get into the club history and make theirown.”

FOOTBALLERS ‘AT GREATER RISK OF BRAIN DISEASE AS THEY HEAD THE BALLMORE NOW’
* Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 Today’s footballers could be at greater risk of brain disease as they head the ball more than prior generations, a study shows. It had previously been thought modern-day players were less at risk because balls have changed and it was believed there were fewerheaders now.
But new figures reveal matches now average 20 more headers than those in the 60s, 70s and 80s. World Cup matches since 1990 have averaged 90-plus headers per game, peaking at 105 per match in 2002, said Dr Willie Stewart of the Glasgow Brain Injury Group. There were 93 headers per match in 2006, 92 in 2014, 88 in 2014 and 91 in 2018. That was up from an average of under 70 before 1990, with a low of 59 per match in 1970. Dr Stewart, who also led the landmark study into the number of footballers dying from dementia, said: “At the highest level of global competition, headers are increasing. “There’s no evidence from these data that modern-day players at the highest international level might be at lower risk of neurodegenerative disease.” Heading balls is feared to be a reason for footballers being up to five times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative illnesses. The campaign to protect footballers from brain damage has gathered pace since the Mirror revealed in 2016 four of England’s 1966 World Cup winners had been diagnosed with dementia. All four – Jack Charlton, Nobby Stiles, Martin Peters and Ray Wilson – have since died, and teammate Bobby Charlton is now living withthe disease.
A study of players in the English top division in 1966 shows 40% of those who have died had dementia. Last month a Leeds University study showed modern footballs travel faster and hit players with more force, which scientists fear causes more damage than the old leather balls used to. Dawn Astle, whose ex-England star dad Jeff Astle died from dementia aged 59 in 2002, wants dementia recognised as an industrial disease for professional footballers. She said: “If today’s footballers are under the impression this will only affect those who played the game 50 years ago, they arewrong.
“How much longer do we have to wait for action to protect modern players and support those already living with dementia?” Source: Read Full Article * Tags Jac , Mental health, Nobby Stiles

COWBOYS OLS MARTIN, ERVING GO DOWN WITH INJURIES * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/27/2020 * Covered NFL since 1997, Cowboys since 2003 * Previously covered Bengals and Dolphins * Lives in Dallas area with his wife and two children ARLINGTON, Texas — Plagued by injuries on the offensive line all season, the Dallas Cowboys lost right tackle Zack Martin and left tackle Cameron Erving within four plays of each other on the first drive of Thursday’s game against the Washington Football Team. Martin is out because of a calf injury, while Erving is out because ofa knee injury.
Erving went down with a right knee injury at the 10:27 mark of the first quarter. Martin appeared to suffer a left calf injury with 8:33 left in the quarter. Both players went directly to the locker room, although Erving later returned to the sideline, in uniform but without his helmet. Martin was on the injury report last week because of a calf injury but he was not on it this week. Brandon Knight took over for Erving and the Cowboys have Terence Steele, who started the first nine games at right tackle, taking overfor Martin.
Martin moved to starting right tackle for the first time in his career last week against the Minnesota Vikings after earning Pro Bowl honors in each of his first six seasons at right guard. He played right tackle in the second half of the Cowboys’ Week 3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Martin missed the first meeting against Washington becauseof a concussion.
Erving suffered a knee injury in the season opener and missed five games. He has started the past five games at left tackle. Left tackle Tyron Smith played just two games this season before going on injured reserve with a neck injury that required surgery. Right tackle La’el Collins did not play a game this season because of hip surgery. Center Tyler Biadasz is on injured reserve because of a hamstring strain but is expected to return in a few weeks. The Cowboys have not had the same starting offensive line configuration for more than two games this season. They have been forced to use 14 different line combinations during the season. LEAGUE IMMORTAL JOHNS MAKES AN APPEARANCE AT WALLABIES TRAINING * Post author By mediabest * Post date 11/26/2020 First it was Michael Cheika bringing Panthers No.7 Nathan Cleary into Argentina training and now it has emerged Wallabies backs have been soaking up advice from one of rugby league’s all-time greatest players, Andrew Johns. Wallabies halfback Nic White sent social media into spin on Thursday evening by posting a happy snap of he and Johns after a trainingsession in Sydney.
The Wallabies have been training at Waratahs headquarters in Daceyville this week and keeping a low profile before their final showdown of 2020 against Argentina next Saturday at Bankwest Stadium. Johns also wanted to keep his visit on the down-low but White’s Instagram post clearly let the cat out of the bag. The Wallabies say Johns was invited down for a session by attack coach Scott Wisemantel, who before working predominantly in rugby used to play first grade for the Parramatta Eels between 1988 and 1992. Wisemantel has extremely close ties with former Wallabies coach and current England boss Eddie Jones, who tried to poach Johns to rugby when he was in charge in Australia. Friendship: England coach Eddie Jones chats with Andrew Johns at Coogee Oval in 2016. Credit:Steven Siewert Jones brought Johns in to help England during their three-Test series against the Wallabies in 2016. Under Cheika, the Wallabies lost the series 3-0. Johns, who wasn’t sporting official Wallabies kit, helped Wisemantel run a number of drills with the backs. It is unclear whether the legendary halfback will be doing more work with the group in thefuture.
Australia didn’t score a try in their most recent outing; a 15-15 draw with the Pumas last Saturday in Newcastle. It comes as Cheika, the former Wallabies boss, invited Cleary to Pumas training on Thursday. However, once pictures emerged of the NSW halfback helping out some of Argentina's kickers, team officials asked for the media not to run theimages.

Mikel Arteta lauded Nicolas Pepe’s reaction to getting sent off against Leeds as the Ivorian returned to the scoresheet in Arsenal’s win over Molde on Thursday. In his first game since being sent off for headbutting Ezgjan Alioski at Elland Road on Sunday, Pepe curled home a second-half opener to send Arsenal on their way to victory in Norway. During the week, Arteta had to field questions about whether Pepe’s future in north London was in doubt after the reckless red card, but the Gunners boss claimed the 25-year-old’s attitude has been positive since the weekend. Mikel Arteta praised Nicolas Pepe (left) after he scored in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Molde The Arsenal manager said Pepe has reacted well to getting sent off in the Gunners’ last game Arteta claimed in his post-match press conference: ‘We all know where his level is. Pepe curled home Joe Willock’s cross five minutes after half-time, while Reiss Nelson and young striker Folarin Balogun sealed Arsenal’s spot in the Europa League knockout stages in the NewYear.
Hargreaves told BT: ‘It (the goal) was really important for him. They paid a lot of money and everyone expects the end product. ‘He’s put himself in a better position. Mikel will be delighted with the performance.’ Arteta also praised striker Folarian Balogun (left) who netted his first Arsenal goal in Norway The BT Sport pundit also praised debut scorer Balogun, who netted on just his second substitute appearance for the Gunners on Thursdaynight.
The 19-year-old turned and fired home inside the penalty area after a swift breakaway involving Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith-Rowe to round off a successful European night for the Gunners. Hargreaves added: ‘It was a big moment for the young man. I liked the way they celebrated as a team around him, he’s another young player who’s going to have a great career. I think for Mikel he’ll be happy with what he saw.’ The 19-year-old scored in just his second Arsenal game moments after coming off the bench Arteta believes the goal was just rewards for Balogun’s displays in training, and can hopefully put a difficult summer filled with transfer speculation behind him. The young striker’s contract comes to an end after this season and the teenager has been linked with a move to Championship side Brentford next year. The Arsenal manager said after the game: ‘(The goal) was well deserved for the boy. He’s working really hard. We had some difficult months with the speculation around him.’ Arteta (left) claims Balogun’s goal is a reward for some hard working in training recently Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Balogun has an outside chance of featuring in Sunday’s Premier League encounter with Wolves and has urged Arsenal to make room for the young forward in theirplans.
Keown told BT Sport: ‘Other teams are interested in him, what about Arsenal giving him a pathway to get into the first-team? Can he make into the first eleven? ‘This is the B team almost. There is a big game at the weekend as it’s a big thought for Arteta.’SHARE THIS ARTICLE
