THE RAINS.
The monsoon season has well and truly arrived onto our little island paradise. Two days ago, I had a delicious mix of sunscreen and sweat dripping off my nose and onto my paddle board as I floated out in the Indian ocean. I had spare tubes of sunscreen in every pocket and every bag. My desk drawer, my bike basket, my purple pockets. Sunscreeneverywhere.

My body didn’t know what time it was, let alone which side of VISITING SONEVA JANI! A photograph of the sea around the Maldives. IT'S BEEN A DELIGHT, SONEVA So, while this will be a little out of left field, due to a change in circumstances, I have chosen to leave Soneva Fushi much sooner than originally intended. The first plan had been to leave in April, then I agreed to extend until September, however plans have a way of changing – as they are wont to do – and I will now be leaving in June. In fact, I have already left. After 33 hours of STORY TIME - BAREFOOT BOOKSELLER So originally my plan for this blog was to outline my trip to one of the neighbouring islands because I have to get a medical check-up for my visa extension, and I am totally thrown by the idea of wearing shoes again. Like actual shoes! However, due to that island currently going into a lockdown, that trip has been postponed. Instead, we haven’t done a book recommendation blog for a while A NEW WAVE OF ISLAND READING A New Wave of Island Reading. On Saturday morning, I said a teary and slightly premature goodbye to my island home at Soneva Fushi. I was waved off from the jetty by many of the friends and DHANEE, A MALDIVIAN GOODBYE In the last few days, a delicate stillness has had hold of Soneva Jani. We have fewer guests at this time of year and the lagoon, which is often choppy and changeable, is almost perfectly still, making it easy to spot the sharks and stingrays swimming lazily between the villas. The sky, which often holds a lot of mist, is a clear pale blue with a couple of fluffy, unmoving clouds.WRITING TO REMEMBER
Since I arrived on Soneva Jani, most nights before I go to sleep I challenge myself to remember everything I’ve done the day before. Even though each day is a new adventure, the time feels like it has rolled into one long day of books, sea, sand and my ever-present purple uniform. I sometimes struggle to summon the memories as quickly as I would like and fear that I will forget so much of my SPA DAY - THE BAREFOOT BOOKSELLER Spa Day. Updated: Mar 6. So, this Sunday, for the first time ever, I went to a spa. I know, people are stunned when I tell them this, but the spa has never attracted me. The idea of a massage with some random person touching me while I try to relax in a state of semi-undress didnot appeal to me.

GUIDE TO TRAVEL WRITING Here at Soneva, we don’t only run the bookshops, we also host activities and session, such as our Creative Writing Classes. Purpose/Goal 2. Storyline 3. Edit your experiences 4 ADVENTURES FROM YOUR LIVING ROOM The world is in a strange place. Many of the things we have taken for granted – our health, freedom, ability to travel – have been pulled out from under our feet and if you are anything like me, you might be feeling a little lost. At the best and worst of times, books are my most reliable companion, a comfort, solace, and escape. Your travel may have been suspended, your holidays and trips ANOTHER LITERARY YEAR: ALICE'S FAVOURITE READS OF 2020 Christmas and New Year festivities on Soneva Jani were big and noisy, sparkly and fun. All the normal over indulgence was happily done and New Year was celebrated with performances from fire throwers, acrobats, musicians, dancers, a magician and an opera singer. New Year often brings reflection, and I’ve been thinking a lot about all of the books I’ve read this year. The custom is to dance and play music in the streets, but mainly to throw coloured powder at each other so that each and every person is covered head to toe in a fantastic rainbow of colours. THOSE NASTY LITTLE NIBBLERS. Now that our week of wet weather has passed, and the glorious sunshine has returned to its rightful place, everyone is back outside with a bounce in their step. Instead of rushing from shelter to shelter, hidden under raincoats and umbrellas, people are stopping. Basking, chatting and taking a moment. This has given me a chance to have a chat with Kai, a junior researcher on the ScienceA NATURE READ
The weather has been a little crazy this last week, at both Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani. This would be due to being in the midst of a cyclone - so a 'little' is a bit of an understatement. (I admit, I did kind of love the weather. I love a heavy rainstorm and walking through rivers in bare feet!) We have a wonderful nature section in the bookstore and I realised it doesn't get enough attention. 'THIS PARTING WAS WELL MADE' If the last few weeks has taught us anything, it’s that life doesn’t often work out the way we plan. My adventure in the Maldives began as an unexpected break from reality, and two weeks ago it ended just as unpredictably. On Saturday morning, I said a teary and slightly premature goodbye to my island home at Soneva Fushi. I was waved off from the jetty by many of the friends andHELLO GOODBYE
Hello Goodbye. April is the month of change and there’s a lot of it happening around Soneva Fushi at the moment. Something that you have to come to terms with very quickly in resort life is that people come and go very fast in and out of your life. Some you might see again; many you know you won’t. There’s a high turn over here and people DHANEE, A MALDIVIAN GOODBYE In the last few days, a delicate stillness has had hold of Soneva Jani.
CALL ME BY MY NAME. IF YOU CAN REMEMBER IT.... A bit like judging a book by its cover, so much of how we behave and act is based on our gut instinct. Our gut reaction. Intuition. The first time you meet someone. Starting at a new job, a new friend, a new country. Going on a date. Choosing a new book. Your gut speaks to you instantly. And I mean instantly. It’s just down to how much welisten to it.

When I’m in the ocean, I love to dive right down, abandoning my snorkel, sucking in a huge breath, and plunging head first into the cooler depths. What I’ve been doing, I hadn’t realised, is actually a sport called freediving. One Saturday morning at Soneva, I received a text. I’d been added to a Whatsapp group saying that a lesson had been organised for the hosts the following afternoon.INTO THE DEEP
When Georgie Codd decided to tackle her phobia of fish, she had more of an adventure in store than she bargained for. Determined to overcome her fear by trying to swim with a whale shark - the largest fish in the ocean, her quest takes her around the world with the hope of tracking down this enormous predator. Ultimate Library teamed up with luxury resort, Soneva Fushito
bring the first ever pop-up bookshop to the Maldives.
Our search for a barefoot bookseller sparked the imagination of the world, and proved that in uncertain times, the dream of a residency among books, sea, and sand is universally appealing. After receiving thousands of applications from all corners world, we chose two lucky candidates to leave their lives behind for three months and help run our desert island bookshop. Our first barefoot bookseller, Hugo Wilson, started the journey in October and passed the baton on to Aimee Johnson from Penguin's Random House Ireland in January who's closed the shop one last time for the season on May 28th.
This is just the first chapter in what we hope to become an epic saga. We're looking for more barefoot booksellers to help run our favourite beach bookshop. Stay tuned for more updates on how and whento apply.
In the meantime check out our blog posts to live vicariously through our previous booksellers and find tonnes of fantastic book reccomendations on the way.
