SPRING 2020 ARCHIVES Spring 2020 anime season rankings (and thoughts on anime blogging) 3,112 words later, I’m finally finished with my Spring anime season reviews, and what a promising season it’s turned out to be! I ended up reviewing 9 anime over the last few weeks, and I couldn’t say any of them were even average, let alone bad. Phew! Given the state ofGOOD ANIME MUSIC
Good Anime Music. Because sometimes I need music like I need air in my lungs. Here’s the YouTube playlist. I’ll update this over time. If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device. Videos that you watch may be added to the TV's watch history and influence TVrecommendations.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL ANIME GOLDEN AGE? For me, a personal anime golden age is any consecutive run of 3 years in which the highest number of your favourites are gathered. 3 years may seem arbitrary, but I’ve chosen this specific range because, at least from my experience, the vast majority of anime fans tend to live and die in that time, leaving behind their lists and blogs as if time suddenly stood still, their scribblings, once FAST DIALOGUE IS FAST FOR A REASON Fast dialogue is fast for a reason. I’m a follower of people in the anime industry, but mostly, it’s just the (good) directors I like to keep tabs on. I delve into their works and the more I find, the more I trust in those same people to deliver yet more good anime. Hayao Miyazaki is a popular example, and Masaaki Yuasa is another. THE GYMNASTICS SAMURAI EPISODE 1 ANIME REVIEW The Gymnastics Samurai as a sports anime: in which case, it’s hard to look past Yuri on Ice. It’s about figure-skating rather than gymnastics, but both begin with the main character on the verge of retiring. Finally, there’s Zombie Land Saga, which is basically from the same creative staff that made The Gymnastics Samurai. TOWER OF GOD GETS AN ANIME: THE EXCITING WEBTOON BLAZING A The Tower of God is an ongoing story that began life as a webtoon in 2010, created by Lee Jong-hwi (aka SIU). In it, Bam enters the titular Tower at the lowest level, in search of his friend, Rachel, who dreams of reaching the top and seeing the beautiful starry night sky from itssummit.
SAMURAI CHAMPLOO ARCHIVES Midicronica’s “San Francisco” was in many ways a fitting ending for an anime which drew so heavily from hip-hop and reggae culture, but there was somehow a disconnect. Samurai Champloo’s ending always struck me as unbearably happy, like the colors on the screen and the chords of the song were attempting to sweep something under the rug. NO. 6 AND HOMOEROTICISM IN ANIME It’d be hard to watch No. 6 and not notice how homoerotic it is. I’ve now seen up to episode 5 and it’s notable how blunt it’s becoming in suggesting that Shion and Nezumi are in love. This is not a yaoi series though, it’s not a sexual or pornographic thing, I’mnot sure it’s

RE:ZERO VS JAPAN SINKS: ANIME FOR FANS VS ANIME FOR Re:ZERO (Subaru and Rem) My problems stem from the core aesthetic of the show: Re:ZERO is an anime made for anime fans, and it looks it. Sometimes they are elven princesses, other times they are maids, butone thing
FROM MANGA TO ANIME: KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF EIZOUKEN Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! mangaka is Sumito Ōwara, who, at the time of writing, seems quite young for a mangaka at just 26 years old.To put this into perspective, Ōwara would’ve been just 17 years old when (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!anime director) Masaaki Yuasa was directing The Tatami Galaxy, and yet, just 10 years later, he’s now working with Yuasa. THE MILLIONAIRE DETECTIVE A fun and satisfying debut that feels in many ways like a throwback to late Nineties anime like The Big O and Cowboy Bebop, albeit with a less masculine and more homoerotic subtext for the Noughties.. If I had to condense my love for anime into one single moment, I’d choose the scene when `Space Lion` begins playing in the 13th episode of Cowboy Bebop (Jupiter Jazz.) (aka Hands off the Motion Picture Club!) is a love-letter to anime and, more broadly, to the boundless potential of animation, where the only limit is the led in your pencil and the depths of your mind. NARUTO & CHILD SOLDIERS / THE THRILLING TRAGEDY OF KAKASHI Obito, the boy, dies. His left eye, with its newly developed Sharingan, is transplanted into Kakashi’s own damaged eye-socket. And so born is the famous Copy Ninja. There are larger action scenes in Naruto, bigger pay-offs, more dramatic sacrifices, but Kakashi Gaiden is ferocious and exhilarating because it depicts ninja not assuper-heroes

DESTROYING HER IDENTITY: THE TIMELESS, TERRIFYING WORLD OF KAIBA Posted on 28th May 2019 by bateszi / 1 Comment I have dreams. I want to do something with my life. I want to be remembered. In my own little world, everything revolves around me. Isn’t it terrifying then to imagine a world where all of those important feelings, the very things that make you what you are, can be compressed into a memory ‘chip’ small enough to fit into the palm of your hand? Such is the way of things in the 2008 dystopian anime series _Kaiba. _It’s been 11 years since Masaaki Yuasa unleashed this utterly unique anime on the world, but does it still hold uptoday?
If anything, it’s more relevant now than ever! Continue reading →Anime /Editorials
OKAY TO DELETE: FORGETTING MEANINGFUL ANIME Posted on 19th May 2019 by bateszi / 6 Comments > Do I have the discipline to> me, in April
Well, I have the answer now: no, I do not have the discipline! For a little while, I tried, but nothing really sparked. From the moment that I stepped off the treadmill, I just stopped thinking about anime altogether. I guess I just needed the rest. Anyway, my little Spring hiatus gave me a chance to think about how I’m approaching anime andthis blog.

SPRING STATUS UPDATE Posted on 8th April 2019by bateszi
/ 3 Comments
As I reflect on how things have been going for the blog since November last year, I’m satisfied that I’ve been able to post something new most weeks. I feel like I’m into the routine of writing about anime again. The Winter season was good for me: from _Dororo_ and _The Promised Neverland_ through to _Run with the Wind_,
it had a lot that I was able to empathise with and write about. I’m sure I can continue in this vein, but I’m thinking of changing tackinstead.

THE PROMISED NEVERLAND ANIME REVIEW: VULNERABLE & COMPULSIVE Posted on 5th April 2019 by bateszi / 0 Comment _The Promised Neverland_ was great. At some point during its run, I started watching new episodes as soon as they were out. Every episode seemed to end on a massive cliffhanger, teasing me to the point of screaming (in frustration, but I know where your mind’s going!) I can only speak for myself and it’s hard to know how fans of the manga felt, but as an anime-only viewer, I can’t complain at all: by the end, I was compulsively watching _The Promised Neverland._ Continue reading →Anime /Reviews
BOOGIEPOP AND OTHERS ANIME REVIEW: IF ONLY… Posted on 31st March 2019 by bateszi / 2 Comments _Boogiepop and Others_ is many things, but an anime for casual viewers it is not. Unless you’re willing to give it your full attention, it will leave you behind. One measly episode a week is not nearly enough to keep track of such a complicated web of things: to be honest, I’ve spent the last week watching it and even then I was still feeling lost by it all. This is just the nature of _Boogiepop_: it sets out to confuse, only to unravel from there, but like a particularly tough knot, there is satisfaction to be found in untyingit all.

YOU CANNOT SAVE THE WORLD ON YOUR OWN: THE PROMISED NEVERLAND EPISODE11
Posted on 24th March 2019 by bateszi / 1 Comment What a treat episode 11 was. At this point, I have to say I think this anime is as good an adaptation as fans of _The Promised Neverland_ could have hoped for. It’s the best kind of escapism: I lost myself watching this episode, it flew by so fast, and I can hardly stomach that there’s now onlyone more left.

A WARM HEART IN THE GRIM WORLDS OF DORORO & RUROUNI KENSHIN Posted on 15th March 2019 by bateszi / 0 Comment Watching _Dororo_ has helped me realise that Kazuhiro Furuhashi is one of my favourite anime directors. He is the man responsible for directing the breathtaking _Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal_ (_Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-hen_) which is a marked departure from _Kenshin_’s much lighter TV series and tonally has much more in common with _Dororo._ In short, both anime are grim as heck. A LIGHT INSIDE THE DARKNESS: THE GREAT PASSAGE (FUNE WO AMU) Posted on 25th February 2019 by bateszi / 1 Comment _The Great Passage_ (Fune wo Amu) is about creating a dictionary. The people involved invest decades of their lives into its singular craft, which is no small feat. The series begins as Mitsuya Majime joins the dictionary’s editorial team. He’s a weird guy, introverted, but fascinated by words. Switched from a different job that he was struggling with, it’s like something has finally clicked for him. This is the job he was born to do, but every now and then, he has nightmares about being lost at sea. The water rises about his legs as a flood of words threatens to sweep him away.
