GARDENING WITH RAINWATER Community gardeners have been among the first to revive rainwater harvesting in the U.S. In New York City, for example, since the drought of 2002, the Water Resources Group (WRG), a collaboration of community gardening and environmental organizations, has helped build demonstration rainwater harvesting systems in more than 20 communitygardens.

DEER-RESISTANT PLANTS: SHRUBS AND TREES FOR THE DEER A large, multistemmed, suckering plant reaching up to 20 feet in height, the pawpaw is native from southern Ontario west to Nebraska and south to Florida. In the garden, it is most commonly used as an understory shrub. The pawpaw also adapts well to open sites, where it can grow into a tall, densely branched tree. KEEP RATS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Compost areas must be monitored carefully, and if possible, kept in hard plastic or metal containers with tight-fitting lids. Bags of trash placed near a garden offer an all-you-can-eat buffet to a colony of rats. Like compost, trash should be kept only in sturdy cans withtight-fitting lids.
CUT-FLOWER CARE: HOW TO MAKE FRESH FLOWERS FROM YOUR Cut all flowers and foliage about one inch from the bottom of a main stem. Make the slice at an angle of about 45 degrees. Cutting at an angle provides a larger exposed area for the uptake of water. It also enables the stem to stand on a point, allowing water to be in contact with the cut surface.
