BATTLE OF BRITAIN LONDON MONUMENT The Airmen's Stories - P/O A V Clowes Arthur Victor Clowes was born in New Sawley, Derbyshire on 16th August 1912. His father, also Arthur Victor Clowes, was born in 1889 and killed on 1st July 1917 serving with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). BATTLE OF BRITAIN LONDON MONUMENT On September 11th Langley was shot down by return fire from a Ju88 over Sevenoaks, in Spitfire X4325. He baled out, unhurt. On September 15th Langley was shot down and killed in combat with Me109’s. His Spitfire P9324 is believed to have come down at Wick House, Bulphan. He began training at 2 E&RFTS Filton and soloed in April. At the request of the Air Ministry McGowan’s employers released him for six months from December 1938 for continuous training with the RAF. After the fall of Poland he escaped to France where he flew with the Armee de l'Air in Groupe de Chasse III/2. BATTLE OF BRITAIN LONDON MONUMENT Oswald Anthony Hardy was born on 23rd August 1911 in Dalhhousie, India. He was educated in England and returned to Bombay in 1933 where he was employed as a clerk. Back in the UK once more he joined the RAFVR in September 1939 as an Airman u/t Air Gunner. With his training completed he joined 264 Squadron at Kirton-in-Lindsey in early August1940.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN LONDON MONUMENT Roy Andrew McGowan was born on 29th December 1917 in Bristol and joined the newly-formed RAFVR in March 1937 as an Airman u/t Pilot. He began training at 2 E&RFTS Filton and soloed in April. At the request of the Air Ministry McGowan’s employers released him for six months from December 1938 for continuous training with the RAF.
