NEWS ITEMS
Joint letter from the Ministry of Education and BCTF BCTF President Teri Mooring and Minister of Education Rob Fleming have signed a joint letter to teachers in BC about COVID-19 and its impacts on education. Please read and share this important letter.
COVID-19 update: What happens after Spring Break? As you no doubt already know, all in-school classes across BC are suspended at the direction of Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. This is absolutely the right decision to help keep teachers, students, school staff, and all our families safe in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. More... Solidarity Statement in support of Unist’ot’en Camp and the Wet’suwet’en Nation The BC Teachers’ Federation reaffirms our solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Nation. As a union committed to the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, we call on the governments of BC and Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Coastal GasLink Pipeline to respect the position taken by the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs. More... BCTF statement of solidarity with Iranian-Canadians On behalf of the 45,000 members of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation, I want to express deepest condolences to all those who are grieving the loss of friends, family, and loved ones in the crash of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 in Tehran. More... Questions about bargaining? The BCTF’s goal is to negotiate a new collective agreement that supports teachers and students with better teaching and learning conditions. Click here to find outmore.
Teacher salaries across Canada BC has a teacher shortage that is negatively affecting student learning. Our new teachers have the second-lowest starting salaries in the country, and all of our members receive far less than our colleagues in Alberta and Ontario. With BC's high cost of living, it's no wonder BC is having a hard time recruiting teachers from otherprovinces.
BCTF POLICY STATEMENT ON INCLUSIVE EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIALNEEDS
The BCTF is committed to the inclusion of all students in British Columbia’s public schools. The policy specifically states that “every student can learn, and every student is entitled to an appropriate education and full range of education services in theircommunity.”
