ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: ARCHITECTURAL HOUSE DRAWINGS Color was added with a pastel chalk graded background, and a water-based marker bleeding technique was used for inside the house. Colored Sharpies added a punch in areas too small for the bleedingtechnique.
ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: ARCHITECTURAL PRINTS For this printing project, students were asked to research a famous structure and create a styrofoam printing plate highlighting it withina cityscape.
ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: PAPER MÂCHÉ RAIN STICKS Our student teacher, Ms. G, planned and taught a fabulous paper mâché sculpture lesson for us. Interactive rain sticks were anabsolute hit!
ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: SILHOUETTES OF THE SERENGETI Welcome 7th graders! 7th graders did a great job on our first project of Quarter 3. We started with the idea of a graded wash water ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: ZENTANGLE ANIMALS We switched out our Zentangle Landscapes for Zentangle Animals this quarter and the results were amazing! Most students were very successful with this project after we practiced Zentangle patterns as well as watercolor techniques. ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: PAPER MACHE GOTHIC-INSPIRED Hi there. I love this activity! I'm hoping to try it with my grade 6s (although I think it'll take us until the end of the year). I was wondering about a few things: ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: AMATE BARK PAINTING After practicing some bird and "tree of life" sketches, we finialized a design on our crumbled-then-ironed paper. We also worked on Ombré paint effects and finished with some 3D ART AT BECKER MIDDLE SCHOOL: CELEBRATING ART PUBLICATION If you are not familiar with this art contest publication, check it out here. This is a new approach for us at BMS and so far, it's been a great adventure. We started off with Drawing Challenges, exploring the Design Thinking Method and geometrical string art. All of our learning experiences are discussed and reflected on through the students' individual blogs. Take a peek at our string artwork below. Students were asked to create curve in their design (although no curved lines are actually sewn). We discussed symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance of course, as well as the idea of how changing the slope of each line just slightly, creates the curve.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 2016 WE ARE STILL HERE! ABSTRACT VALUE PORTRAITS It's been a while since we've posted updates about our class doings but we are still here! Check out our Value Portraits that 7th graders completed last week. We started with practicing facial features and proportions, but it was up to the students how much realism would be included in the final piece. Value shading was also a big concept as we worked on this through a class demo and individually through a value study worksheet. We discussed different ways to apply value changes (hatching, cross-hatching, scumbling, blending, etc). In the final work, students chose how they wanted to represent value within the abstract shapes. Posted by Becker Middle Artat 11:00 AM

MONDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2015 OIL PASTEL LANDSCAPES Landscapes are one of our major areas of focus in 7th grade, especially when we take a more abstract approach when creating them. After practicing a variety of landscapes (mountain-scape, seascape, desert-scape) we create are own version on black construction paper. The concept of atmospheric perspective is used to help define space without using linear perspective. This quarter, we used both oil pastel and chalk pastel and the results were dramatic. Before the pastel goes on, we outline our landscape drawings with glue to create a fluid and bold outline. This project was based off a popular method we've used here.
