ON THE HOMEFRONT DURING THE CIVIL WAR On the Homefront During the Civil War. Life was tough for adults and children in the mid 1800’s, especially on small farms like the Bennetts. It became increasingly much more difficult as the men went off to fight in the war in the 1860’s. There were many responsibilities shared by MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN Sherman retired from the United States Army on November 1, 1883. Three years later, he became a resident in New York City. Sherman wrote his memoirs entitled: The Memoirs of William T. Sherman. His work consisted of a two-volume set that was published in 1875. William T. MUSEUM AND COLLECTIONS Museum and Collections. Bennett Place has an extensive collection of artifacts which share the stories of the Bennett Family and the final weeks of the American Civil War. SURRENDER NEGOTIATIONS Surrender of Lt. General Kirby Smith at New Orleans, Louisiana. May 26, 1865. From 1862 until the end of the Civil War, Confederate Lt. Gen. E. Kirby Smith was in charge of the Trans-Mississippi Department. By early May 1865 no regular Confederate forces remained east of the Mississippi River. Average middle class, they were considered at that time to be “yeoman” farmers, farmers who owned small acreage, working the land themselves, and providing for themselves through their skills of sewing, making and repairing tools, and other aspects of self sufficiency. GENERAL JOSEPH EGGLESTON JOHNSTON General, CSA (August 31, 1861, to rank from July 21) Commanding Department of Northern Virginia, CSA (October 22, 1861 – May 31, 1862) In 1862, Joe Johnston was given command of the Department of Northern Virginia and became engaged in what was virtually a phony war with the Washington based army of General George B. McClellan. MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN Sherman retired from the United States Army on November 1, 1883. Three years later, he became a resident in New York City. Sherman wrote his memoirs entitled: The Memoirs of William T. Sherman. His work consisted of a two-volume set that was published in 1875. William T.
