OUR MISSION AND PURPOSE Global warming is the defining environmental challenge of our time. The need for quality, unbiased scientific information about global warming could not be more urgent. Yet there are few sources of historic global temperature records, the foundation underlying allDATA OVERVIEW
The datasets presented here have been divided into three categories: Output data, Source data, and Intermediate data. The Berkeley Earth averaging process generates a variety of Output data including a set of gridded temperature fields, regional averages, and bias-corrected station data. Source data consists of the raw temperature reports that form the foundation of our GLOBAL TEMPERATURE REPORT FOR 2020 Global Temperature Report for 2020. Berkeley Earth, a California-based non-profit research organization, has been preparing independent analyses of global mean temperature changes since 2013. The following is our report on global mean temperature during 2020. We conclude that 2020 was nominally the second warmest year on Earth since 1850.BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Elizabeth is the co-founder and Executive Director of Berkeley Earth. She has led the organization from the founding to the original land-temperature data collection and analysis, to analysis on mitigation of global warming, and the more recent addition of global air pollution data collection and analysis. 10,000 YEARS OF CARBON DIOXIDE 10,000 Years of Carbon Dioxide. A graph reflecting atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations over the last 10,000 years. Due in large part to the burning of fossil fuels, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have now risen about 50% above the preindustrial level. At recent rates of growth, we would reach double the preindustrial by~2075.

SIMMOD: A SIMPLE PYTHON BASED CLIMATE MODEL SimMod: A simple python based climate model. by: Zeke Hausfather, Berkeley Earth zeke@berkeleyearth.org. The relationship between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and future warming is complex, depending on the atmospheric lifetime of gases, their radiative forcing, and the thermal inertia of the Earth, particularly ouroceans.
AIR POLLUTION AND CIGARETTE EQUIVALENCE Here is the rule of thumb: one cigarette per day is the rough equivalent of a PM 2.5 level of 22 μg/m 3. Double that level, and it is equivalent to 2 cigarettes per day. Of course, unlike cigarette smoking, the pollution reaches every age group. The EPA estimates 5 that the average air pollution in the United States in 2013 was 9.0μg/m 3.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
Our ongoing research includes the study of climate variability, extreme events, and the role of the oceans. View a three page summary of our initial project objectives and early results.A two page summary of our results to date, aimed primarily at the media, is available by clicking here.More technical results, meant primarily for scientists, are presented below. JANUARY 2021 TEMPERATURE UPDATE The global mean temperature in January 2021 was 0.87 ± 0.06 °C (1.57 0.11 °F) above the 1951 to 1980 average. This is equivalent to being 1.18 ± 0.07 °C (2.12 ± 0.13 °F) above the 1850 to 1900 average, which is frequently used as a benchmark for the preindustrialperiod.
GLOBAL TEMPERATURE REPORT FOR 2017 Berkeley Earth, a California-based non-profit research organization, has been preparing independent analyses of global mean temperature changes since 2013. The following is our report on global mean temperature during 2017. We conclude that 2017 was likely the second warmest year on Earth since 1850. Global mean temperature in 2017 was 0.03 °C (0.05 °F) warmer Some features on berkeleyearth.org require javascript. Please turn on javascript for a better experience. LAND + OCEAN DATA SET Berkeley Earth is pleased to announce that we’ve merged an oceans temperature analysis to our existing land data, and have a new global DATA SET: LAND + OCEAN*
BERKELEY EARTH AN INDEPENDENT NON-PROFIT Berkeley Earth was created to address potential biases in the land surface temperature record. We are now expanding scientific investigations, educating and communicating about climate change, and evaluating mitigation efforts in developing and developed economies.*
AIR POLLUTION
In April 2014, Berkeley Earth began a major new effort to collect and analyze the world’s air pollution data. In August 2015 our first scientific paper on air pollution in China, was accepted for publication by PLOS ONE.*

INDEPENDENT
Berkeley Earth is independently operated, funded primarily by unrestricted educational grants . We pursue objectivity without concern for policies of government, industry or philanthropic ventures.TRANSPARENT
We continue to lower the barriers to entry into climate science by posting all our raw data and our analysis code online to provide an open platform for further analysis. We also post all our Berkeley Earth papers , memos, graphics
and analysis code
.
COMPLETE
Berkeley Earth took a data-driven approach to temperature analysis (using five times more data than other groups), and we are now taking a data-driven approach to other areas of energy and climate science.BLOG
