PRIMING COMPOUNDS AND PRIMERS INTRODUCTION Sat, 12 Oct 2019 12:38:58 | Ballistics | 75 commentsA priming compound
is a highly sensitive explosive chemical which, when struck by the firing pin or hammer of a weapon, will explode with great violence, causing a flame to ignite the propellant. This explosive chemical is often mixed with other chemicals which provide oxygen to assist in the production of the flame, a fuel to increase the length and temperature of the flame and ground glass as an abrasive to assist in the initial ignition of the explosive. In the realms of forensicscience,...

lever-action
.22 caliber repeating rifle to its line of sporting arms in 1969. Generally similar in appearance to Winchester lever-action repeaters developed by John M. Browningin the
late 1800's, this small-game and plinking rifle is produced for Browning in Japan. It weighs only about five lbs., and fires .22 long rifle , long, and short regular and high speed cartridges interchangeably, without adjustment. Capacity of its tubular under-barrel magazine is 15... RICOCHET ANALYSIS INTRODUCTION Fri, 11 Oct 2019 10:51:41 | Ballistics | 86 comments When a bullet strikes any surface, there is a critical angle at which the bullet will bounce off or ricochet from the surface rather than penetrate. After ricocheting from the surface, the missile will lose a considerable amount of its velocity anything up to 35 in test firings and, invariably, lose its stability. This is contrary to the popular belief that a ricocheting bullet will carry further than one fired at the elevation for maximum range. The actual degree at which a bullet will... RECOVERY METHODS FOR FIRED BULLETS Thu, 10 Oct 2019 13:46:06 | Ballistics | 12 comments If a weapon has been recovered, it will be necessary to compare fired ammunition from this weapon with fired ammunition recovered from the scene. Obtaining a series of test cartridge cases from a self-loading pistol presents little difficulty as they merely have to be picked up. Obtaining fired bullets in a near pristine condition is, however, a little more difficult. In the past, cotton waste or wadding has been used, but this material can be quite abrasive to soft-lead bullets especially... 1954 by O. F. Moss-berg amp Sons, Inc. Weighing only 8 lbs., it is for those who prefer a medium-weight, moderate price target rifle. The turnbolt action of this rifle is basically similar to that of the Mossberg Model 44-US which was a training rifle used by the Army in World War II. Cocking occurs as the bolt is rotated open when the action is cocked, an indicator projects from the rear of the bolt. Dual extractors are provided, and the... PENETRATION POTENTIAL Tue, 08 Oct 2019 13:25:37 | Ballistics | 24 comments The penetration of various materials can be of great assistance in the investigation of shooting incidents. It is also of considerable general interest if for no other reason than to show how often the movie makers and novel writers make appalling blunders. In the past, one of the standard tests performed to assess bullet and cartridge performance was the penetration of pine boards of various thicknesses. This, as with any other type of penetration test, is plagued with inaccuracies. Many... REMINGTON NYLON RIFLE Tue, 08 Oct 2019 04:19:58 | Firearms Assembly |28 comments

Featuring a one-piece stock, receiver, and fore-end produced from structural nylon, this unusual blowback-operated rifle was designed by a team of Remington engineers headed by Wayne E. Leek. The designation Nylon 66 was taken from the name of the high-strength DuPont nylon selected for the rifle. Chambered for .22 long-rifle...

repetitive marks which are useful in the identification of the type and sometimes the make of weapon used and of the individual arm when test cartridges fired in it are compared with an evidence cartridge. Impressions that are made by file marks, tool marks,
or other inequalities on the surface of the breechblockwhen a shell sets
back against it under high pressure are likely to be more reproduciblethan marks...

EXACT AIMING TECHNIQUES Mon, 26 Aug 2019 09:59:03 | Sniper Training My father once told me a yarn about a duck-hunting friend who fired box after box of shells but never dropped a bird because he aimed at entire flocks instead of individual ducks. His point was that no matter how hard you try, your shooting can never be more exact than your aiming. Recognizing that consistency equals accuracyand vice versa,
a sniper constantly looks for ways to increase his shooting consistency and diagnoses any causes of inconsistency. Variations in rifle barrel temperature lead to variations in where a bullet impacts because a hot or even warm barrel will warp at least slightly. How much it warps, how quickly it warps, how differently it warps according to different kinds of ammo these add more variation and lead to still more inconsistency. The...
