SACAJAWEA – HIGH POINT IN THE BRIDGER MOUNTAINS – BIG SKY If you were to simply hike up Sacajawea and back down the trip would be 4.5 miles round-trip with about 2,000 feet of gain, well-worth the effort to earn a spot on the highest peak in the Bridger Mountains. THE HIGHLINE: BEST TRAIL IN GLACIER PARK Top of the line. Over the past several years, I’ve hiked over 300 miles in Glacier Park – Many of those miles were walked during back-country trips, or while doing off-trail hikes and climbs, but I’ve also rubbed elbows with thousands of tourists along most LOST LAKE AND SQUARE BUTTE IN CENTRAL MONTANA "Let’s play two!" –Ernie Banks This past Saturday (5/27/17), some friends and I left Helena at 6 am, drove 140 miles to Lost Lake (via Great Falls and Highwood), walked along the cliffs on the north side of the lake, and then drove over to make the challenging climb onto Square Butte - about 30 MT. I left Helena at 5:45 am, drove 75 miles, parked alongside a road, and started hiking at 7 am – There is no trail, so you’re on your own. RIDGE WALK ABOVE MANN GULCH A good paddling. At least once a year I like to drive out to the Missouri River 20 miles north of Helena, kayak into the canyon, and climb something in the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness (GOM). It is 3.25 miles by kayak through a beautiful limestone DEVIL’S GLEN: A CANYON WITHIN A CANYON “GLEN” - a secluded narrow valley (Merriam-Webster) As far as glens go, this one checks all the boxes. The scenic two-mile stretch of the Dearborn River known as "Devil's Glen" has it all - beautiful narrow canyons, waterfalls, deep clear pools, rapids, sunny meadows. I’ve visited several times on my way up to, or down TORREY LAKE: BACKPACKING IN THE PIONEER MOUNTAINS The five of us piled into Kacey’s van on a Tuesday morning, drove 125 miles (from Helena) to the trailhead at Mono Creek Campground in the Pioneer Mountains, and did the 10-mile hike to Torrey Lake in 5.5 hours; a fairly slow pace due to the many trees that winter winds had blown down onto the trail, plus the fact that we gained 3,100 ft. of BRIDGER RIDGE TRAIL: ONE OF THE GREAT BOZEMAN-AREA HIKES Our plan was to follow the same route used during the Bridger Ridge Race; a 19.5-mile trek from Fairy Lake to the “M” on the outskirts of Bozeman. Unlike the trail-racers (and most hikers), we walked the trail from south to north, which meant dealing PEAK-BAGGING IN THE ELKHORNS WITH THE HHS OUTDOORS CLUB It is comprised of a thick layer of beautiful white marble that can be seen from miles away. From there we scrambled up a steep slope covered with large angular rocks to a bivouac on the summit of Elkhorn Peak (9,381 feet). After lunch at the rocky shelter, we hiked over to Crow Peak (9,414 ft.) 1.8 miles to the southeast.BIG SKY WALKER

POWELL: ON THE RIM OF THE CRATER Mount Powell is the highest peak in the Flint Creek Range (10,168 feet). It is situated between Helena, Butte, and Missoula, making it a great option for many who are seeking a challenging one-day adventure. After lunch at the rocky shelter, we hiked over to Crow Peak (9,414 ft.) 1.8 miles to the southeast.Skip to content
