LANDSCAPE EVOLUTION OBSERVATORY The Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) is the world’s largest laboratory experiment in the interdisciplinary Earth sciences. The experiment consists of three artificial landscapes contained within elaborate steel structures and located inside three adjacent bays within the University of Arizona – Biosphere 2. REEF SOLUTIONS IN THE BIOSPHERE 2 OCEAN The Biosphere 2 Ocean provides a unique opportunity to develop, test, and deploy solutions to the coral reef crisis. The Biosphere 2 Marine Mesocosm is a totally enclosed system and was originally designed to simulates a Caribbean reef. It is a large tank with a surface area of 35x20 meters, from 7 meter deep grading to a shallow lagoon DESERT | BIOSPHERE 2 Desert. Biosphere 2's desert biome was designed to simulate an arid desert scrub ecosystem in a coastal climate with erratic winter rainfall and summer drought. Its primary goal was to provide a hydrological transition zone between the desert and rainforest mesocosms. The objective was to learn how to balance atmospheric chemistry by varying hydrological regimes within the tropicalmesocosms.

REEF SOLUTIONS IN THE BIOSPHERE 2 OCEAN The Biosphere 2 Ocean provides a unique opportunity to develop, test, and deploy solutions to the coral reef crisis. The Biosphere 2 Marine Mesocosm is a totally enclosed system and was originally designed to simulates a Caribbean reef. It is a large tank with a surface area of 35x20 meters, from 7 meter deep grading to a shallow lagoon DESERT | BIOSPHERE 2 Desert. Biosphere 2's desert biome was designed to simulate an arid desert scrub ecosystem in a coastal climate with erratic winter rainfall and summer drought. Excessive rain and relatively low evapotranspiration during the initial two-year closure resulted in a dense scrub invaded by grasses. Conversion to a Mediterranean scrubwoodland was

The experiment consists of three artificial landscapes contained within elaborate steel structures and located inside three adjacent bays within the University of Arizona – Biosphere 2. SAVANNA | BIOSPHERE 2 Savanna. The savanna biome was designed to perform several different functions within Biosphere 2. Its primary goal was to provide a hydrological transition zone between the desert and rainforest mesocosms. The objective was to learn how to balance atmospheric chemistry by varying hydrological regimes within the tropicalmesocosms.
