An estimated 65% of the North American population of Pacific Loon breeds in the Canadian and Alaskan boreal forest. An estimated 24% of the species' North American population breeds within the Boreal Forest. MIGRATORY BOREAL BIRDS' DISTANT DESTINATIONS About 90% of all bird species and individuals leave their breeding grounds in the North American Boreal Forest after the summer breeding season. For landbirds alone, the top five destinations are: Destination (Est. number of wintering birds) USA (1,150,000,000) Mexico (680,000,000) Brazil (200,000,000) Colombia (110,000,000)Venezuela

THREATS TO THE CANADIAN BOREAL FOREST More than 66% of the 140,000-km2 (34 million-acre) region has been leased to companies for extraction. However, oil sands extraction is far from the only threat to the boreal forest when it comes to oil and gas. More than 155,000 active gas wells are currently operating in Canada's boreal forest while an additional abandoned 117,000 gas wells THREATS TO BOREAL BIRDS Threats to Boreal Birds. Two of the largest threats facing boreal birds are habitat loss and climate change. Although much the northern boreal has so far been mostly spared from development, the southern portion of the forest has experienced heavy alterations from logging, mining, hydroelectric development, and oil and gas extraction. THE BIRDS OF MANITOBA The following is a guest post by Christian Artuso of Bird Studies Canada. Over the past few years he has been helping to organize and develop the Manitoba Breeding Bird Atlas, a comprehensive outlook of which birds breed in Manitoba and where. As Christian mentions below Manitoba has an extremely low population density, making the extraordinary volunteering efforts for the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN "PELECANUS ERYTHRORHYNCHOS American White Pelicans are gregarious birds, often associated with Double-crested Cormorants. The Future of Boreal Birds. While the majority of the Canada's boreal forest is presently considered ecologically intact, oil and gas, timber, mining, and hydroelectric development are pushing northwards at increasing rates.
