CONTRACTION SURGERY
Friday was one of those fun, engaging, awesome days of learning. It was play-based, rigorous, and had my operating room of 1st grader doctors begging for more. Today I wanted to share with you more about Contraction Surgery – a morning filled with hands-on contraction fun! Setting the Stage Like Compound Construction, part of creating THE DAILY 5 IN PRIMARY CLASSROOMS The Daily 5 in Primary Classrooms. Over the last 8 weeks, we have covered a lot of ground. We’ve explored each other’s classrooms, traded ideas, asked questions, and remembered why The Daily 5 matters. Creating lifelong readers requires daily, dedicated time to read. We, as teachers, must give students time to fall in love with books. POETRY IN 1ST AND 2ND GRADE Poetry in 1st and 2nd Grade. From turning snakes into spaghetti and clouds into cotton balls, writing poetry is absolutely magical! Students use their five senses and figurative language to create poems that break all the rules (punctuation, capitalization, directionality) they’ve been learning all year & make something is truly magical. 1ST GRADE SCHEDULE: A DAY IN THE LIFE 1:25-2:25 RtI Math and Reading. There are 5 1st grade classes and during RtI we split students among all 5 classes. The actual ‘intervention’ classes have 12 students in them (max) and are restricted to Tier 2 and Tier 3 students. These intervention groups are all small-group based. CLASSROOM MUST-HAVES: RESOURCES I LOVE Today I’m sharing some of my classroom ‘must-haves’. These are resources that have paid dividends for me, completely worth the expense. We use these resources every single week, if not daily. I’ve included my affiliate links to Amazon, so the resources are easy to find! First up, 1 POUND OF DICE! I snagged 72 dice THE BROWN BAG TEACHER Stocking Stuffers Kids Will Love. OPINION WRITING MENTOR TEXTS Opinion Writing Mentor Texts offer students a ‘real’ perspective on a genre and give students professional authors to emulate. Making writing concrete is valuable, and mentor texts help us do this. Once a mentor text has been read, place it on an easily accessible classroom bookshelf for students to re-read and use in their own writing. 50+ MORNING TUB IDEAS 50+ Morning Tub Ideas. Morning Tubs offer a play-based opportunity for students to explore, create, and communicate. A non-threatening way to start the day, Morning Tubs help reduce the length of your morning routine, get students excited about the day, and encourage collaboration. You can read all about how Morning Tubs work in myclassroom
GUIDED READING: 1ST GRADE STYLE Picking 1-2 words from the book that align with sight words students need to know at that level, we practice writing, saying, and applying the words. Application, not memorization, plays a HUGE role during this time. We do lots of sentence writing, oral writing, and sharing our ideas while using our focus sight words in context. CLASSROOM MUST-HAVES: RESOURCES I LOVE Today I’m sharing some of my classroom ‘must-haves’. These are resources that have paid dividends for me, completely worth the expense. I keep the activities in Sterilite containers with their week’s words on Command Hooks above the containers (a color representing each of my ability groups). THE NEXT STEP FORWARD IN GUIDED READING The Next Step in Guided Reading (red) is the first version of the text. It’s no longer in print. While the basic components of both texts are the same, The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading (yellow) is a more streamlined (yet more specific) version. It includes more specific prompting and stems for each guided reading levels, included SOUND: 1ST GRADE SCIENCE Making Sound ‘Real’ Typically our sound unit takes place in the late spring, but this year our school was blessed with the opportunity to attend a Christmas Concert put on by the Kentucky Orchestra. Our 1st grade team decided it was the perfect opportunity to integrate our science, arts, and music curriculum with a two week unit! GROWTH MINDSET: THE POWER OF YET Gerald is the perfect character for teaching students about growth mindset! Poor Gerald feels absolutely deflated and knows it’s time for him to leave the jungle dance floor. This is the climax of the story and a perfect time to have a stellar classroom conversation about diversity, acceptance, love, and the power of “yet”. * Skip to primary navigation * Skip to main content * Skip to primary sidebar* Skip to footer
