Insight Journal. In the Buddhist tradition, wisdom is nurtured by a deep investigation of experience involving both dharma study and meditation practice. The Insight Journal, which BCBS has published since 1994, is dedicated to exploring some of the insights that a Buddhist inquiry uncovers about ourselves, our world, and our fellowbeings.
MINDFULNESS OF BREATHING Mindfulness of Breathing meditation builds on the foundation established with Satipaṭṭhāna meditation. Using the Anapanasati-sutta, the “Discourse on Mindfulness of Breathing In and Breathing Out”, as the main source text, Bhikkhu Anālayo offers guided instructions as presented in his text – Mindfulness of Breathing: A Practice Guide and Translations (Anālayo, 2019). In the spring of 2021, Bhikkhu Anālayo, resident scholar-monk at BCBS, began an exclusively online Path on “Early Buddhist Meditation.” Later in 2021, two more year-long Paths will start, with three residential retreats and smaller online group meetings inbetween.

FAITH: ITS ROLE AND MEANING IN A BUDDHIST WISDOM TRADITION The word we normally translate as faith from the Pali language, the language of the original Buddhist texts, is saddhā, which literally means “to place the heart upon.”. Saddhā means to give our hearts over to, or place our hearts upon something. Its meaning can vary a lot, depending on what we put our heart upon or the quality with SHINING THE LIGHT OF DEATH ON LIFE: MARANASATI MEDITATION In learning more about death awareness meditation, we learn how to shine the light of death on life. It’s not meant to be an exercise in morbidity or self-pity, or in terrorizing ourselves. In fact one often feels light, happy and unburdened after directly acknowledging the truth of our inevitable death.WISE ATTENTION

In the spring of 2021, Bhikkhu Anālayo, resident scholar-monk at BCBS, began an exclusively online Path on “Early Buddhist Meditation.” Later in 2021, two more year-long Paths will start, with three residential retreats and smaller online group meetings inbetween.

What makes this integration so difficult is that taṅhā, desire or craving, is not just something added to our experience: It is literally built into our cognitive process. We are, if you will, born with the pathology of desire.
