He was the older of two sons–his brother Adam was born three years later. Matt was very close to his brother and used to wait by the mailbox for him to come home from school. After Matt’s death, the family adopted a RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT The summer before Hoffschneider entered Columbine, his girlfriend’s parents alleged in court papers that Hoffschneider’s mother and sister kicked in their door one morning. Edmund Lemieux, the girl’s father, said the Hoffschneider family “was abusive and physical towards us.”. “It was a serious situation at the school,” hesaid.
RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT Rage against the dying of the light. Here is an interview with Columbine survivor Emily Wyant, a sophomore who was under the table in the library with Cassie Bernall. It comes from the book of interviews Stand By Me by Julie Towers ( which is available here, or here on Amazon.com ). The interview took place in 2010. RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT Mark David Chapman put four .38 caliber hollow-point bullets into John Lennon’s back right outside his apartment at the Dakota building in New York City at 10:50 PM on December 8, 1980 with a Charter Arms Undercover .38 Special snub-nosed revolver—which Chapman had bought legally in Hawaii. He then sat down on the curb and calmly waited for COLUMBINUS, ACT I, SCENE 11: WORK columbinus, Act I, Scene 11: Work. Following on from the previous scene, “History Lesson.”. Dec. 14, 2012 when a lone gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Young members of the Hedaya Islamic Center spoke of their sadness for those children’s deaths. RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT Here is a scene (“Work”) from Act 1 of the play columbinus, where Eric (still called by the generic name “Freak”; Dylan is “Loner”) shows off how to make his pipe bombs as if he’s at work making a pizza. “Work” (On the screen we see a search engine projected. A popular and pretty cheerleader, Kirsten Costas, was dead, and sheriff’s deputies were searching for the girl who stabbed her. RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT His GPA at that point was 3.314 (a B+ average), while Dylan only had a 2.74 (B-) in the middle of his senior year. (I can’t seem to find Eric’s SAT scores, or even whether he took the test.) In addition, Eric’s senior grades were also very good, with 3 A’s and 2 B’s at the end of first semester, a 3.6 GPA (JC-001-026323). RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT columbinus, Act I, Scene 14: Dinner. MATTHEW JOSEPH KECHTER Matthew Joseph Kechter (February 19, 1983 - April 20, 1999) Matt was born February 19, 1983 to Joseph and Ann Kechter. He was the older of two sons–his brother Adam was born three years later. Matt was very close to his brother and used to wait by the mailbox for him to come home from school. After Matt’s death, the family adopted a daughter, Ashley. Matt was a straight A student at Columbine and played for the junior varsity football team his sophomore year, hoping to make the varsity team the next year, when he would be a junior. As it happened, the Columbine Rebels team won the statewide championship after Columbine on December 5, 1999, and dedicated the win to Matt. Matt’s brother Adam with the state championship trophy; Ann is tothe right.
Matt went to the library on April 20 to work on a project about World War II. When Eric and Dylan entered, he took shelter under a table along with Isaiah Shoels and Craig Scott. Dylan noticed Isaiah, mentioned that he’d found a “nigger” and tried to pull him out from under the table. Eric shot and killed him, and Dylan responded by shooting and killing Matt with his shotgun. Craig was left covered in his friends’ blood, something that left him emotionally scarred for years afterwards. Matt was found clutching a pencil in his hand, a detail mentioned in several news reports; for example, “One dead student was found clutching a pencil.” (”Anatomy of a Rampage,” _NY Daily News_, April 23, 1999.) Per the official report on what was found with Matt’s body: ”His right hand held some type of writing instrument.” (JC-001-012302). His “blue/black” notebook was found on the table he hid under (evidence item #1033). Matt’s parents, Joe and Ann, with a portrait of their son. Side note: I can’t even begin to imagine what Matt’s parents thinkabout
Sue Klebold’s new book and media interviews, given that her son Dylan was the one solely responsible for killing him. A better picture of the above portrait: att’s plaque at the Columbine Memorial on the April 20 anniversary, decorated with flowers (as were all the others). Matt’s cross at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, similarly decked with flowers for the anniversary. Matt’s grave at Mount Olivet Cemetery (Kelly Fleming and Daniel Mauser are also buried in this cemetery).*

A MOTHER’S RECKONING I apologize for my long absence. Catch-up entries will follow, especially for those victims whose birthdays I didn’t get a chanceto mark.
I got my ebook pre-order of Sue Klebold’s memoir _A Mother’s Reckoning_ a couple of hours ago and have been eagerly skimming it for any new information. Of course I’ll go back and read it more carefully, but for now I just want to make note of a few things that stuck out to me at first glance, in pretty random order. (Page numbers per my ebook edition; once I get my paper edition I’ll update.) I found it quite interesting that Chapter 10, “The End of Denial,” contains a full account of the massacre and who killed or injured whom, which must have been especially painful to write. Susan says repeatedly throughout the book how one of the main reasons she wrote it is to let the families of the victims know howsorry she is:
> Saying I am profoundly sorry is one of the reasons I wanted to write > this book. (p. 271) Sue sort of seems to distances herself a bit from Judy Brown, suggesting they weren’t as close as Judy and Brooks Brown might have made it seem (I am not quite sure how to phrase that.) See this passage, when Sue is describing the agonizing wait outside the Klebold home on April 20, when the police wouldn’t let them enter their own home as it was considered a crime scene: > I looked up to see a figure coming up the driveway. It was Judy > Brown, the mother of one of Dylan’s childhood friends, Brooks. > Alerted by the Littleton rumor mill that Dylan was involved in the > events at the school, she had come to our house.>
> I was startled to see her. Our boys had been good friends in first > and second grades and then reunited in high school, but they > hadn’t been close, and I’d only seen Judy a few times in the > years since elementary school. We’d chatted warmly a few weeks > before, at a school event, but we’d never done anything together > except when our boys were involved, and I wasn’t sure I could > manage any social niceties. I was too disoriented to question why > she was there, but it did seem odd for her to have materialized > during this most private of times. She and Alison_ _ sat on either side of me on > our brick sidewalk, urging me to drink the water they’d brought. > Tom and Byron paced up and down the front walk with brooding > expressions as we all struggled with our own splintered thoughts.> (p. 26)
Sue’s thoughts about Judy’s reaction regarding the incident when Eric cracked Brooks’s windshield: > Later that month, I got a phone call from Judy Brown, the mother of > Dylan’s friend Brooks. Brooks and Eric had gotten into a fight at > school, and Eric had thrown a snowball at Brooks’s car, damaging > the windshield. Judy was furious and launched into a tirade against > Eric, which perplexed me. It seemed to me that the boys shared > responsibility for the incident, and I didn’t understand her > impulse to get involved when they’d resolved it themselves. The > ferocity of her hatred for Eric seemed like an overreaction to me.> (p. 196)
Finally, Sue meets with Judy during the pre-graduation meeting also described in Brooks Brown’s book _No Easy Answers_: > The following night, March 30, I attended a pre-graduation meeting > for parents of seniors and ran into Judy Brown. Since our phone > conversation about the snowball more than a year earlier, we’d > seen each other only briefly, mostly after school productions, and > so we were eager to catch up. Before long, our conversation veered > off into our mutual interest in art—my figure drawing sessions, > and some classes she’d taken. We looked at some drawings I had > stashed in my car before saying good-bye. Neither one of us > mentioned Eric. (p. 241) Sue says she had no idea Dylan was smoking: > We had no gravesite, so I spent hours in Dylan’s room trying to > intuit the answers to the questions plaguing us. I was shocked to > find a pack of cigarettes in one of his drawers. Not long before he > died, I’d thought I smelled tobacco on him, and asked him outright > if he was smoking. He gave me an exasperated look and said, “I’m > not that stupid!” It seemed as if he had real disdain for the > practice, and I’d believed him. The cigarettes in his drawer > suggested he’d straight-out lied. (p. 115)Or drinking:
> Dylan was drinking at the end of his life, something Tom and I did > not know. (p. 163) Dylan’s brother Byron was not in fact “kicked out of the house” for using marijuana: > Juvenile records are usually sealed, but after the tragedy Dylan’s > Diversion reports were released. They stated that Tom and I had > “kicked” our older son out of the house for using drugs. That > brought me up short. The decision for him to leave home had been > Byron’s, made in consultation with a family counselor, and the > move itself had been completely amicable. Plus, Byron was still very > much in our lives after he moved out; we saw him for dinner at least > once or twice a week. In the Diversion interview, Dylan said he > loved his brother but that marijuana use was “a waste of time and > money.” (p. 209)Keep reading

* Aurora theater shooting juror: One juror refused death penalty This definitely was not how I expected this trial to turn out! I wonder who the juror was, and who the other two jurors who were “undecided,” were. The first was definitely a woman: “SHE felt that life was appropriate and SHE would not be swayed,” the juror said. “SHE just said SHE couldn’t do it.” (Interviewfrom _Today_.)
I wonder what juror 737 (the foreman and Columbine survivor) thought. The media is probably harassing him right now as I type… I’ve never been on a jury (yet) but I can imagine that they’d get rid of me right away! “I avidly read true crime and all about mass shootings…” “Your Honor, please strike this juror!!!”*

* Jurors begin final deliberations in Aurora theater shooting trial I don’t have a good feeling about this. I have the sneaking suspicion a decision may well come today. Of course, the whole reason for this trial even happening is because DA George Brauchler was absolutely convinced he could get a death penalty and so rejected offers from the defense to accept a guilty plea and life without parole.*

ISAIAH SHOELS (1980-1999) Isaiah Eamon (or Emon) Shoels, born August 4, 1980, died April 20,1999.
Just think, it’s what would be Isaiah’s 35th (!) birthday. Aside from teacher Dave Sanders, Isaiah was actually the oldest of thosekilled.
How time passes, and things change…(or not; apparently Columbine High School is just as white as it was back then…) Isaiah’s grave at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver: Back of the gravestone: Isaiah’s cross at Chapel Hill Mortuary and Cemetery: Isaiah’s inscription at the Columbine Memorial:*

So they’re shooting the Rachel Scott biopic, _I’m Not Ashamed_, right now, and this is a photo from the set where they were (obviously) filming the “Rachel’s death” scene outside the school. Can you spot the “Eric” and “Dylan”? http://imnotashamedfilm.com/ The film is to be released April 20, 2016, per the official website. I recognize that this is going to be a very “Christian”-themed movie, but I’m still curious about how closely it’ll reflect the actual facts. Given that the story is repeated in all of the Rachel Scott books written by her family and in interviews with family members like Rachel’s brother Craig Scott, I suspect they _will_ include some version of the very much disputed (to put it lightly!) alleged “final conversation” between Rachel and Eric (Eric: “Do you believe in God?” Rachel: “You know I do!” Eric: “Then go and be with him then!”).*

hardback, Kindle version and audiobook)Amazon.co.uk
(not
available in the UK until 7 April 2016, alas)Barnes & Noble
I wonder if the title has anything to do with Andrew Solomon’s article about Adam Lanza’s dad Peter, called “The Reckoning”–especially
since Solomon interviewed Sue for an extended interview in _Far Fromthe Tree_.

* Memorial for Aurora Theater shooting victims scaled backfinancially
> The fundraising effort for a permanent memorial>
> to the victims and families of the Aurora theater shooting is going > much slower than organizers envisioned, leading them to > significantly lower the financial objective from the original> $400,000 goal.
>
> Since fundraising began in December, a committee overseeing the > effort has brought in about $15,000 in donations. The goal now is to> raise $50,000.
This story made me a little sad. Mass shootings are now so common in the US that the typical response is, “Another one?” They have to be especially heinous (such as the Sandy Hook massacre or Aurora) to get much attention beyond the initial stories, and people tend to get a little “memorial-ed out.” Columbine also had to scale back their memorial a bit, though they still raised the $2.2 million cost for it (per the memorial FAQ).
But Columbine was “iconic” in a way that other mass shootings have not been. Holmes himself mentioned researching Columbine when making the plans for the Aurora massacre, according to a psychiatrist who testified during the trial. I was very “_not_ surprised” to hear that, to say the least! Anyway, if I had infinite money I’d pay for the rest of it. (For that matter, maybe people in Hollywood could contribute since it was at a movie, after all…) As it is, I gave a little something at https://npo.justgive.org/720memorial,
since I’m a sucker for this kind of thing…*
