350 ENGINE BLOCK 3956618 I have an engine that I got many years ago and it has the following numbers: VO217WK Built in Towanda, MI Block 3956618 date B129 or 8 (Feb 12, 1969 or 8). It has the one year Heads 3927186 date: G318 (July 31, 1968) 64 cc I am pretty sure this was a truck motor - 350 cu. in. 4-bolt main. 396 TIMING FOR DUMMIES Ball park u will need about 32 to 36 degs total all in around 3000 to 3200 rpms. So loosen off the hold down bolt on the dizzy, but enough grip to not let it go loose. fire up the engine.. and increase rpms till ther is no more advace with the timing light. At these rpms (should be around 3200) turn the dizzy till u get about 34/ 35 degs. HURST SHIFTER STOP BOLTS ADJUSTMENT. Repeat this procedure with the 3-4 lever and reverse. To adjust the stop bolts, back the bolts out of the shifter frame until only a few threads remain. Push the stick firmly into third gear and hold. Screw in the stop bolt until contact is made. Release the stick and back the stop bolt out one turn and tighten the jamnut. HOW TO DISASSEMBLE A SAGINAW TRANSMISSION Using your snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring in front of the bearing off the shaft. Grab the shaft by the splines and yank it toward you. It will move about 1/4". Next use a screwdriver to coax the bearing out of its seat in the case. The bearing will slide past the splines and off the shaft . M. SBC VALVE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE So I thought I would throw this out there, and see what the experts think. We've all seen all the standard valve tightening sequence procedures (#1cyl exh lifter starts to move up, adjust intake, etc etc). But my son & I were analyzing a better way to adjust our SBC valves with minimum number HOWARDS CAMS ROLLER LIFTERS REALLY NOISY? Erik Beckett. After breaking in my new 383 and fine tuning everything it seems that my Howards Cams hydrualic roller lifters seem to be pretty noisy, especially at idle. The new motor is a 383 with Dart Pro 1 heads and the Howards cam and lifters package. We have the timing set at 14 initial with the 21 degree bushing for a total of 35 degrees CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE SP383 STROKER TIMING Hi, I have a Chevrolet Performance SP383 Stroker which has been timed per their recommended Specs as detailed below: "Install Distributor as follows: (1) Locate cylinder #1 top dead center (TDC). NEW TREMEC 5 SPEED CALLED THE TKX ! More specs here. And they note that multiple gear ratios will be available. TREMEC TKX 5 Speed. Click to expand That's pretty much the ratios you could get with either the TKO 500 or 600. One significant difference is that the model with the lower 1st gear DUNTOV 30-30 302 CAMSHAFT Crane makes the 30-30 blueprint cam, but several companies offer a cam with the same specs (Comp, Lunati, Melling, etc.). I run the modern Comp Cams '30-30+' solid lifter grind (PN 12-673-4) in my DZ and it's one nasty-sounding sumbitch. This cam is more responsive on the low end and has a killer mid-range pull. PUT YOUR VIN ON DYNACORN BODY??? So Rich your saying you can take a Dynacorn body and put your VIN on it and that makes it a new/old Camaro. A Camaro that you would pay 20K to 90K for because it is made of newer material then a original Camaro. If a person has to resort to useing a Dynacorn body to save his project, is just making a TIMING FOR 383 STROKER Set the timing @ 36* BTDC at 3,000 RPM (or the point at which it no longer advances). This is your "total timing" Let the engine come back down to idle, and note where the timing is at idle. This is now your base point for tuning. If you want to advance or retard the timing from this point, you don't have to stick your head under the hood with MELONIZED DISTRIBUTOR GEAR From the GM parts catalog, their words, not mine. 10456413 Distributor Gear. This melonized steel gear is required on all crate engines and roller camshafts that are made of steel. If engines are assembled not using this gear it may affect your engine warranty. For aftermarker roller cams, it depends on the roller cam itself. WHAT CAUSES LOW VACUUM? Of the first three things you listed, the large or radical cam is most likely to cause low idle vacuum. A low CFM carb will usually raise the vacuum signal. large carbs will tend to lower the signal some. Yes, an engine that runs smoothly can have vacuum leaks - not big ones, but leaks The easiest way to find most vacuum leaks is to apply a STRONGER STEP UP SPRINGS FOR EDELBROCK 1406 The springs are for the fuel enrichment system as in lifting the piston on the metering rods and as vacuum decreases, spring tension takes over and raises the metering rods from the jets and enrichens the mixture with more fuel. The spring value given, 8 inches in this case, means the rods will start to lift at 8 inches of vacuum orlower.
POSITRACTION DIFFERENTIAL LUBRICANTS If your running a Ford 9 inch stay away from synthetics, regular 80w90 takes the heat out better. Add your bottle of addative to that. A blown Power Valve acts like it is open all the time resulting in a Dramatically over rich mixture at Idle and no response when adjusting the Air Screws. If your Vacuum at Idle is say 10Hg's you should run something like 6.5 Hg Power Valve so that it only opens when you blip thethrottle

HELP! I’ve got the following fresh engine installed in my ‘69, which I just fired up for the first time this past weekend: 383 (stroked old-style 2pc rear main seal 350) with Eagle 5.7" rods, new stroker crank, and speed pro forged pistons. The heads are Trick Flow 23 degree, 2.02 intake/1.6 exhaust stainless valves, HD springs good to.540 lift.

One significant difference is that the model with the lower 1st gear 396 TIMING FOR DUMMIES Ball park u will need about 32 to 36 degs total all in around 3000 to 3200 rpms. So loosen off the hold down bolt on the dizzy, but enough grip to not let it go loose. fire up the engine.. and increase rpms till ther is no more advace with the timing light. At these rpms (should be around 3200) turn the dizzy till u get about 34/ 35 degs. 350 ENGINE BLOCK 3956618 I have an engine that I got many years ago and it has the following numbers: VO217WK Built in Towanda, MI Block 3956618 date B129 or 8 (Feb 12, 1969 or 8). It has the one year Heads 3927186 date: G318 (July 31, 1968) 64 cc I am pretty sure this was a truck motor - 350 cu. in. 4-bolt main. HOW TO DISASSEMBLE A SAGINAW TRANSMISSION Using your snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring in front of the bearing off the shaft. Grab the shaft by the splines and yank it toward you. It will move about 1/4". Next use a screwdriver to coax the bearing out of its seat in the case. The bearing will slide past the splines and off the shaft . M. TIMING FOR 383 STROKER Set the timing @ 36* BTDC at 3,000 RPM (or the point at which it no longer advances). This is your "total timing" Let the engine come back down to idle, and note where the timing is at idle. This is now your base point for tuning. If you want to advance or retard the timing from this point, you don't have to stick your head under the hood with WHAT CAUSES LOW VACUUM? Of the first three things you listed, the large or radical cam is most likely to cause low idle vacuum. A low CFM carb will usually raise the vacuum signal. large carbs will tend to lower the signal some. Yes, an engine that runs smoothly can have vacuum leaks - not big ones, but leaks The easiest way to find most vacuum leaks is to apply a MELONIZED DISTRIBUTOR GEAR From the GM parts catalog, their words, not mine. 10456413 Distributor Gear. This melonized steel gear is required on all crate engines and roller camshafts that are made of steel. If engines are assembled not using this gear it may affect your engine warranty. The spring value given, 8 inches in this case, means the rods will start to lift at 8 inches of vacuum orlower.
KNOCKING SOUND AFTER WARM UP The most common things to make a knocking sound are exhaust leak (rulled out, we think) valve train (excessive clearance, either out of adjustment or leaky lifter, or flat cam) or a connecting rod lower bearing. A good clue here is that the noise happens when the motorwarms up.

Awhile back someone had a list that had everything on it including part numbers for a auto (th350) to a 4-speed swap. Do any of you remember this ? After breaking in my new 383 and fine tuning everything it seems that my Howards Cams hydrualic roller lifters seem to be pretty noisy, especially at idle. The new motor is a 383 with Dart Pro 1 heads and the Howards cam and lifters package. We have the timing set at 14 initial with the 21 degree bushing for a total of 35 degrees CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE SP383 STROKER TIMING Hi, I have a Chevrolet Performance SP383 Stroker which has been timed per their recommended Specs as detailed below: "Install Distributor as follows: (1) Locate cylinder #1 top dead center (TDC). (2) Rotate engine to 12 degrees before top NEW HERE! PLEASE HELP WITH MY 1969 CAMARO INTERIOR The rear doesn't have any foam, it's all jute or some kinda cloth based padding. Just re-use the original if it's not too bad, maybe slide a layer of foamon top if you need some extra padding, or hit up an upholstery shop and see what they have that is similar HOW MUCH CAM BEFORE LOSING VACUUM? YES that is too much cam without using either an additional vaccum can or an electric vacuum pump mpbrakes.com . The magic figure is around 230 degrees duration at .050. That is when you start to lose a substancial amount of necessary engine vaccum. Valve lift can play a role too, but cam duration is by far the biggest factor. WHAT OIL FOR MY M21 AND HOW MUCH DOES IT HOLD A lil over 2 quarts of 80-90 wt gear lube, dyno or synthetic, whichever you prefer. I personally prefer dyno oil. I've tried synthetic in my TKO, and didn't like it, too slipery, the syncros didn't work right. R.*
