Although small, the wool sample is a tangible link to a United Nations project that exported live sheep from New Zealand to China in 1947. The export was a United Nations project to improve the quality of sheep in China and was one of the many programmes to offer relief to countries that had suffered invasion during World MR MACDONALD, GEORGE RANALD George Macdonald volunteered in 1952 to collect biographical information on early Canterbury settlers for the Canterbury Museum. The G R Macdonald Dictionary of Canterbury Biographies, presented in 1964, represents twelve years of his research. This Rotuman Hose Kalapa is part of the Oldman Collection cared for by the Museum. Carved from a heavy wood, it stands at just over 1.5m in length and is 136 mm at the widest section of the blade. ANCIENT NEW ZEALAND: SQUAWKZILLA AND THE GIANTS Here strange creatures like crocodiles, turtles, burrowing bats and the world’s largest parrot, nicknamed Squawkzilla by scientists, lived in subtropical forest. Get up close to life-sized models of New Zealand’s lost monsters and learn how scientists are using fossils to uncover this land’s past.
