CHINA’S TRADITIONAL CULTURAL VALUES AND NATIONAL IDENTITY China’s Traditional Cultural Values. The cultural values of a country influence its national psychology and identity. Citizens’ values and public opinions are conveyed to state leaders through the media and other information channels, both directly and indirectly influencing decisions on foreign policy. THE BENEFITS AND RISKS OF THE CHINA-PAKISTAN ECONOMIC The CPEC is now moving into the implementation phase. On May 6, 2016, there was an opening ceremony held in the city of Sukkur in Pakistan’s Sindh Province, as construction began on a section of highway between Sukkur and the city of Multan—it will be part of a network of highways that will connect the cities of Peshawar and Karachi. 4 This network is a major component of the CPEC’s THE BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE: VIEWS FROM WASHINGTON The BRI now covers over seventy countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania. Future plans are even more ambitious, with planned expansion into the Arctic, cyberspace, and even outer space. CHINESE CULTURE STEPPING OUT INTO THE WORLD CARNEGIE-TSINGHUA CENTER The Trump administration holds a decidedly critical view of China’s infrastructure initiatives in Pakistan. Although there is much to criticize in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the administration’s fixation on commercial and economic issues threatens to distract U.S. policymakers from deeper concerns. SETTING THE TABLE FOR U.S.-CHINA STRATEGIC COMPETITION On issues like tariffs and export controls, for example, the Biden administration has yet to initiate substantive rollbacks, going so far as to institute new export controls banning U.S. sales of sensitive technologies to China.
