CARTOONS CONSIDERED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD 1974 And so we continue our ongoing research into what other cartoons were submitted to the Academy for Oscar consideration but failed to make the cut. In 1974, there were 30 entries. Submitted, screened, but NOT nominated were:. AIR CONDITIONED COMFORT – Roc Caivano ALL BOTTLED UP – Charles Cahill / Sam Weiss BUTTERFLY BALL – Jack King and Lee Mishkin THE DEATH HOUR – Fred THOUGHTS ON MARY BLAIR Here is the excerpt: After meeting at art school in the depths of the Depression, the Blairs reluctantly took jobs in the earliest animation studios. “It was way beneath our standards,” confides Lee, “but we needed to eat.”. Lee and Mary worked at the MGM Studios. “Sound was in at that time,” remembers Lee, “so we had Happy ANIMATED COMERCIALS BY BILL LITTLEJOHN Bill animated commercials with characters like Bullwinkle Moose, Captain Crunch, Count Chockula, The Freakies, The Quick Bunny, and the Uniroyal Tiger Paws car to name just a few. Bill Littlejohn was also one of Ade Woolery’s favorite animator’s as well. In this post we will be concentrating on Bill’s work for Playhouse Pictures. “STUFFY DURMA” ANIMATED BY JIM TYER One undeniable joy of perusing the entire run of Milton The Monster is uncovering a quartet of Stuffy Durma cartoons animated by Jim Tyer and voiced by the brilliant Dayton Allen. The character was first conceived in 1953, as a back-up feature in Seeger’s short-lived comic book, Muggy Doo-Boy Cat. RADIO ROUND-UP: “WANNA BUY A DUCK?” JOE PENNER For our last Radio Round-Up of the month, we present the zany radio comedian Joe Penner! Joe Penner was born as József Pintér in Nagybecskerek, located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (and now a part of Serbia) in 1904. In 1907, his mother and father emigrated to the United States and settled in Detroit. Penner and his grandfatherarrived in 1913.
IN HER OWN WORDS: PHYLLIS CRAIG ON DISNEY INK AND PAINT Craig started as a painter on Peter Pan (1953) moved up to do inking, and, eventually doing color key work on Sleeping Beauty (1959). She left Disney in 1964 to raise a family, but soon found herself back in the business at Hanna-Barbera and then Marvel Productions and finally in 1987 at Film Roman. The Trippy Columbia Logo Art in “Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse” For our final post of the year – a look at the animated Columbia logo art the start of Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse. FITNESS VS. FATNESS (PART 10): LOW-CAL AND LOW-BROW Mr. Waste (Hanna-Barbera, Yogi’s Gang, 10/27/73) – A famous record of the 40’s by Red Ingle and the Natural 7 began with the words, “A preachment, dear friends, you are about to receive”The intro should have preceded every episode of this series, one of the sorriest projects to ever disgrace the Hanna-Barbera legacy. To its credit, it was one of the first ventures of the studio to WHAT WOULD ‘RAGGEDY ANN AND ANDY’ LOOK LIKE IF JOE ORIOLO Now – onto this week’s oddity: Did you ever wonder what Raggedy Ann and Andy (1977) would have looked like had it been made by Joe Oriolo productions? This feature film has an incredibly complicated and strange history in many aspects—so we’ll try to not get stuck on too many details- but here’s a few things to put this demo incontext.
