PRACTICES & VALUES
Catholics of different countries and regions of the world practice and celebrate the faith in diverse ways. In some places in the world, people practice Catholicism publicly, with religious displays in city squares, streets and even stores, while in other places, religious practice is considered private, and reserved for the home and sacred spaces. Raising children is one of the most fundamental concerns in most people's lives, and a good deal of data suggests that even loosely affiliated Catholics are likely to turn to religion with the DEATH, MOURNING & THE AFTERLIFE Beliefs and rituals about death, about burial or other forms of disposition of dead bodies, about the purpose of death and what happens to us after we die, and about the relationship between the living and the dead have been central to every major cultural and religious tradition in history. In Catholicism, burying the dead is one of the seven corporal works of mercy, the only activity addedFOOD & FASTING
Fasting (not eating any solid food) and abstinence (refraining from particular foods) is often part of Catholics’ lives during Lent, for a brief period before receiving communion, and in some instances on the eve of a feast, as an act of spiritual discipline and preparation. The degree to which this is observed varies significantly. FAMILY, MARRIAGE & GENDER ROLES Family, Marriage & Gender Roles. The Italian family remains a powerful social institution, even as marriage and birth indicators argue for the weakening of several key traditional family norms. Family is often a primary concern of Catholic life and wellbeing, both among lay Catholics and Church leaders. Depending on the culture, family can be CHALDEAN CATHOLIC CHURCH The Chaldean Catholic Church continues to emphasize its own customs and liturgy, though these have also been changed and adapted over time, and were Arabized in the 20th century. 1. As of 2007, Chaldeans were said to constitute 80% of the Christian population in JORDAN | CATHOLICS & CULTURES Jordan is an Islamic state, but its small Christian community has ancient roots that long precede the foundations of Islam. In contrast to many of its neighbors, Jordan is a moderate and safe place, where Christians and Muslims integrate easily at work and in public. The great majority of Catholics in Jordan are said to be Greek Melkite or "Roum" Catholics, with smaller MEXICO'S CELEBRATION FOR OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CATHOLICS, BUDDHISTS, MUSLIMS HONOR MARY AT MADHU SHRINE Madhu Shrine is located in the Mannar diocese, a Tamil speaking area in the northwest part of Sri Lanka. However, Madhu is sacred to both Tamil and Singhalese Catholics, and even Buddhists and Muslims would also come to the shrine to pay respects to Mother Mary. Madhu Shrine hosts pilgrims throughout the year. SHRINES & PILGRIMAGE Shrines & Pilgrimage. As many as 25,000 people hike the rocky slopes of Croagh Patrick, a mountain associated with St. Patrick, on Ireland's Reek Sunday. The word “shrine” has multiple meanings across religions and even within Catholic usage. For our purposes, it refers to active sites dedicated in honor of a saint, or, lessfrequently, an

Typically about half of the members, called promesantes, are actually dancers.1 Others, socios, help primarily with organization, fundraising, setup, chores, evangelization and accompaniment of young people. In some places in the world, people practice Catholicism publicly, with religious displays in city squares, streets and even stores, while in other places, religious practice is considered private, and reserved for the home and sacred spaces. Some cities and neighborhoods organize CHALDEAN CATHOLIC CHURCH The Chaldean Catholic Church continues to emphasize its own customs and liturgy, though these have also been changed and adapted over time, and were Arabized in the 20th century. 1. The Church is centered in Iraq, from the northern part of the country to Baghdad. Despite this, Irish citizens still overwhelmingly identify as Catholic and participate in the sacraments that mark the stages of life, and there is a great deal of evidence that Catholic ideas continue to shape a good deal of CATHOLICS, BUDDHISTS, MUSLIMS HONOR MARY AT MADHU SHRINE Madhu Shrine is located in the Mannar diocese, a Tamil speaking area in the northwest part of Sri Lanka. However, Madhu is sacred to both Tamil and Singhalese Catholics, and even Buddhists and Muslims would also come to the shrine to pay respects to Mother Mary. Madhu Shrine hosts pilgrims throughout the year.
