LADY IN THE ASHES FAMOUS MURDER CASE IN BOSTON Mrs. Alice Arsenault, owner of a lodging house on Columbus Avenue in Boston, was last seen alive on December 25, 1919. On May 12, 1920, her body was discovered under a pile of ashes in the basement of her house. Paul Pappas, a resident at the lodging house, supposedly had an argument with Mrs. Arsenault on the evening of her disappearance. On October 23, 1989, after attending child-birthing classes at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, Charles Stuart shot his pregnant wife in the head while driving to the nearby Mission Hill neighborhood in Roxbury. Carol DiMaiti Stuart died a few hours later, with their unborn son Christopher delivered byC-section.

A 24-year old woman ran out of gas and was returning to her car from a filling station, when six teenagers forced her to douse herself with gasoline, JOHN HANCOCK HOUSE SITE IN BOSTON Just to the west of the Massachusetts State House, stood the former home of patriot John Hancock.The house was built in 1737, and torn down in 1863, to make way for a new wing of the State House. It is a tragedy that the building was demolished, as it would have been a historic treasure for the city, and a huge tourist attraction. GIANT TEA POT OR TEA KETTLE IN GOVERNMENT CENTER BOSTON Giant Tea Kettle. At Court & Tremont Streets (Government Center) hangs the giant tea kettle "sign" of the old Oriental Tea Company. This huge tea pot was manufactured in 1873 by a company called Hicks & Badger. NORTH STATION EXPLOSION, 1959 North Station Explosion, 1959. On June 11, 1959, a huge explosion occurred on the old elevated platform at North Station. One person was killed, with nearly 40 people injured. The exact origin of the blast was never determined, and it was presumed to be a criminal or terrorist act. Pratt had taken a cab from Roxbury to his home in Southie, and after leaving the cab was accosted by two white men. Bottles were thrown at him and racial slurs shouted. A few minutes later, Pratt was shot by a sniper from a nearby rooftop NANCY BROOK GHOST, BARTLETT NEW HAMPSHIRE Nancy's Brook is located south of Crawford Notch State Park in the White Mountains National Forest. On July 26, 1974, the nude body of a woman was discovered along the shoreline in Provincetown, MA. Because of the serene way in which her body was positioned in the sand dunes, the murder quickly became known as the Lady of the Dunes case. ERADICATION OF SMALLPOX IS CERTIFIED (1979) One of the deadliest diseases in history by sheer loss of life, smallpox was the target of a concerted, worldwide eradication campaign in the 20th century, and it became the first disease to have been successfully wiped out. Efforts focused on vaccination and quickly responding to and curtailing outbreaks. The last person to die from smallpox caught it at a laboratory, where samples of the now-vanquished disease remain.
