CHERIE'S PLACE
Random thoughts and pictures on my journey through life Earlier this evening I watched the film Slumdog Millionaire which I found to be excellent, although I found the emphasis to be quite different from the book on which it is based. VACATION | CHERIE'S PLACE I think I have been neglecting you, I know how you love garden views and I haven’t posted any for some time! It is time to change that. Here are some views from Cragside, the flowers in the bottom left of the first picture are the ones you can see close up in the bottom right hand corner of the second picture.. They were taken on a couple of years ago when I was on holiday in NorthumberlandCHERIE’S PLACE
I would like to share Biddulph Grange gardens with you. These are a unique series of gardens designed by James Bateman around 150 years ago. They feature a Chinese Garden enclosed within its very own Great Wall of China, Italian Terraces, Egyptian Court and so many othercurious features.
THE OLD JEWISH CEMETERY The only way into the cemetery is through Pinkas Synagogue which was founded in 1479. Today the Synagogue is a memorial to all the Jewish Czechoslovak citizens who were imprisoned in Terezin concentration camp and later deported to various Nazi concentration camps.STAINED GLASS
Posts about stained glass written by CherryPie. Every year I get the chance to go on a coach trip and have a fun weekend whilst raising money for the charity ‘Hope & Homes for Children’.This year the destination was Lille which is a beautiful town and we all had a greattime.
CIVIL SERVICE

Today is International Women's Day, so this post is dedicated to all women: International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radicalideologies.
A LAZY DAY | CHERIE'S PLACE When I got out of bed first thing this morning it was snowing heavily and didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. The Defence Management Journal have picked up on the story that the former Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram is cashing in on hundreds of pounds in consulting fees from helping defence companies win lucrative contracts with the MoD. He left the government in June 2007 when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister. Adam is reported to have earned over £170,000 in consulting WHY WOULD THE FRENCH… want to spoil one of their National Icons? Look at this mad idea that James has alerted me to regarding the Eiffel Tower!. Is it to cut the queues or make more money? I have never been to the top level, I am told that the first level is the best view and the only point in going to the top is to say you have done it (not going to bother don’tlike heights)!

U IS FOR UPTON GARDENS There are some lovely tiered gardens at Upton House which lead down to a pond covered with water lilies. When I visited it was such a lovely hot day the garden was packed with people which made it almost impossible to take any decent photographs. But here are a couple togive you an idea
STICKY NOTE EXPERIMENT I found this over at Kate's, it is rather cool as she says. And I do agree some people have way to much time on their hands! Enjoy :-)For those of you who have been following my computer problems. The fault was narrowed down to two components, the mother board or the powersupply unit.
PHOTOHUNT – SPACE
The first photographs show the board game Twilight Imperium which is a game set in space. The Board Game Geek describes the game as follows:Twilight Imperium Third Edition is an epic empire-building game of interstellar conflict, trade, and struggle for power. Players take the roles of ancient galactic civilizations, each seeking toseize the imperial
WINTER SOLSTICE SUNSET Yesterday whilst I was working away at my computer the room suddendly filled with golden light. I looked out of the window to see what was going on, I was treated to this wonderful sky :-)SO THAT WAS EASTER
The weather was so beautiful yesterday it called for a day out which meant arriving at Little Morton Hall just in time for coffee cake ;-) The hall is quite quaint and is so higgledy piggledy it surprises me that it is still standing in tact. There is a little chapel attachedto it and
NEW CAR UPDATE

LAST MINUTE TASKS
There is an organising conference on 16th September for PCS branch organisers based in the Midlands. This has been on the cards since May. I stated at the time that if I was required to do another slide show I would need more notice than I was given last time! I was told that only 6 PowerPoint photographs would be needed to accompany a 5minute talk.

MOBILE PHONE HAZARD
A passenger on a French train had to be rescued by firemen after having his arm sucked down the on-board toilet. The 26-year-old victim was trapped when he tried to fish out his mobile phone, which had fallen into the toilet bowl, and fell foul of the suction system. Earlier
this evening I watched the film Slumdog Millionaire which I found to be excellent, although I found the emphasis to be quite different from the book on which it is based. I am not going to give you a review on the film but you can find a a good one here.
I read the book when it first came out in paperback. I really enjoyed it and loved the premise, which certainly did come across in the film. The ending though is quite different from the book, which incidentally was originally called Q&A and written by Vikas Swarup . I might do a review of the book for you when I can find my copy… I came back to some good news in my mail box – the MoD pay ballotresults
.
PCS members have voted against accepting the divisive pay offer.
The offer means that some of the lowest paid members would receive a cut in their earning potential whilst other members would receive as much as a 17% pay rise.3 Comments

_Posted by CherryPie on April 28, 2009_ https://cheriesplace.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/slumdog-mod-pay/ PREPARING FOR CONFERENCE The voting papers and agendas for the PCS main and group conferences all landed up in my mail this week. I am happy to say I have completed my voting papers and they are ready for posting tomorrow. Obviously I knew what agenda items were tabled for the group conference (I am on the standing orders committee after all ). But today for the first time I saw the National Conference agenda. The agenda is always very busy but reading between the lines I noticed some very interesting motions up for debate… One of my tasks whilst at the conferences is to report on the key motions and debates, sharing information with PCS members who wereunable to attend.
I am toying with the idea of doing ‘Conference Live Tweeting’ – live updates via twitter which will automatically update on my blog and also the local PCS site…2 Comments

Last night my computer decided to throw another wobbly and rebooted itself twice and then turned itself off, refusing to be switched back on again… I tried again this morning and still nothing. So I tried different sockets and checked inside to see if the light blue light on the motherboard was still glowing, which was muchto my relief.
I was beginning to think that yet another PSU had blown up.
On the off chance I changed the power cable over and it started working again… I think it was having little joke at my expense. But anyway onto the PhotoHunt pictures. I spotted this lovely scene on my recent trip to Little Moreton Hall.
For more of this weeks PhotoHunt pictures check out tnchick.

_Posted by CherryPie on April 25, 2009_ https://cheriesplace.wordpress.com/2009/04/25/photohunt-protection/ FIRMIN BY SAM SAVAGE …Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife The book is set in 1960’s Boston in an urban area that is scheduled for regeneration. The novel is narrated by Fermin, a rat who lives in the basement of a run down bookstore. Fermin was the runt of the litter and always last in line to get food. In order to stay alive he start nibbling on the books in the shop. After a while he gains the ability to read. He thinks and sounds more like a human than a rat. At the begining of the novel if I hadn’t already know in advance that I wouldn’t have realised he was a rat. Firmin is a gallant soul who is gifted and wise. He is shunned by his fellow rats and makes plans to befriend the bookseller. In addition to reading books Firmin has a fondness of the local picture house where he views what he calls his lovelies on the big screen. The book is very philosophical and has well drawn characters, and Fermin is quite charming. The book is interspersed with pictures of characters and events that Fermin encounters along the way, I found these quite charming. Before each chapter there were also pictures of book covers these didn’t really add a lot for me. I really enjoyed the book and found it quite a page turner.10 Comments
