Downtown Chicago News Since 2003. Another Downtown Skyscraper Delayed by COVID. For at least the third time since a deadly disease spontaneously appeared in the United States and most certainly did not originate in any particular nation whose government pays internet trolls to censor, threaten, and extort people who say otherwise, a downtown Chicago building project is extending its NINE NEW SKYSCRAPERS, TRANSIT HUB PLANNED FOR CHICAGO’S Open space: 395,339 square feet. Floor area ratio: 16.42 (16.0 base + .42 bonus) Nine new skyscrapers, arranged north-south between East McFetridge Drive and McCormick Place. Four residential towers on the north end, plus several small residential buildings. 9,300,000 squarefeet.
TRIB TOWER CONDO PROGRESS FUELS SPECULATION :: CHICAGO It's been 18 months since we last showed you the back side of Tribune Tower. Back then, the venerable skyscraper was being gutted by skid steers, and a tailings pile of bricks and sorrow was growing in the parking lot facing North Cityfront Plaza. SKYSCRAPERS AND 2,600+ NEW HOMES PLANNED FOR GOOSE ISLAND Unless you’ve been in the doghouse for the last 10 years, you know that building is now called 600 West Chicago and draws tech companies like fleas on a basset hound. NEW HOTEL OPENS ON NAVY PIER :: CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE The $100,000,000 hotel includes 223 rooms in three seven-story structures, with a total length of over 800 feet. For you tape measure types, the total size is 201,124 square feet. If you want to see the hotel without laying your head on a pillow, there is also a rooftop bar called Offshore. Every new hotel in Chicago has a rooftop barthese days.
THE UNION STATION TOWER IS FINALLY REAL :: CHICAGO For as long as anyone can remember, it’s been lots of discussion but no digging in the West Loop where Amtrak has wanted to add a skyscraper to the Union Station complex since before Amtrak was a thing. In the last 15 years, we’ve seen at least three different plans for Amtrak skyscrapers that simply never got off the ground. But that has finally changed. IT’S THE END OF THE BEGINNING AT OGDEN COMMONS :: CHICAGO The $200,000,000 mixed-use project that is replacing two public housing projects reached a milestone recently. Construction has topped out at the building which represents phase one. Construction of Ogden Commons in Spring 2020 Ogden Commons HANCOCK REPLACEMENT PLAN FILED WITH THE CITY :: CHICAGO Several months after a ceremonial groundbreaking, plans for Chicago’s Hancock Replacement have been filed with the city clerk. No, they’re not replacing the 100-story former John Hancock Center recently neutered in name to 875 North Michigan.. HERE’S WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE UNDER CHICAGO’S NEWEST The JDL Development project being built by Power Construction is going to bring over 800 new homes and a shiny new Whole Foods to the neighborhood. Right now the Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and Goettsch Partners design is a forest of rebar and cranes and all LOOP SKYSCRAPER DESIGN TWEAKED :: CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE The people behind the new residential skyscraper at 300 North Michigan Avenue have received approval from the City of Chicago to tweak the design of the 47-story building, already under construction. The revisions include removing the glass “wing walls” at the top of the building that made the west side square. ANOTHER SKYSCRAPER READY TO LOOM OVER CHICAGO’S FULTON The log flume of West Town development is splashing a new apartment tower on the north side of the Lake Street L tracks. SOUTH LOOP SKYSCRAPER TRYING TO BUILD TALLER GETS A Chicago's real estate development community has looked a bit like a Head and Shoulders commercial for the last nine months, scratching its collective noggin about what's going on at 1400 South Wabash Avenue. 1400 South Wabash Avenue (Base map TWO NEW LOOP SKYSCRAPERS TOP OFF :: CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE Cirrus and Cascade are two peas sharing a common podium pod at the corner of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Cirrus is the big brother, with 350 condominiums in 47 stories. Cascade hitches its britches to 37 stories with 503 apartments packed within.
