In order to unify the Greeks and the Egyptians under one religion, Ptolemy I and his Greek advisors created a new god called Zeus-Serapis. They combined the already popular Serapis with Zeus, the King of the gods according to Greek and Romanbelief.
DENYS EYRE BOWER —ART COLLECTON Denys Eyre Bower (1905 - 1977) bought Chiddingstone Castle in 1955 to house his unique collections, and to fulfill his wish of sharing them with the nation. Denys was a gifted collector who devoted his life to finding fascinating objects and works of art. PORTRAIT OF CHARLES I AND HENRIETTA MARIA It is a large portrait of King Charles I with his wife Henrietta Maria. It was painted in the 17th century and is based on a painting by the famous portrait artist Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641). It is a smaller version of the original, which was painted in 1632 and is currently in the Archiepiscopal Castle and Gardens of Kromeriz, CzechRepublic.

Our object of the month for December is this engraved glass made for a Jacobite, or a supporter of the Stuart family's claim to the throne of England. Made in the 18th century, it was designed for toasts to the health of the Stuarts, and decorated in secret symbols and a motto meaning 'go forth with great daring'. The Castle & Collections open from Sunday 23 May 2021 weekly on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, 11am to 5pm (last entry to the house 4.15pm). No booking required. Chiddingstone Castle Literary Festival is held annually in our grounds and brings an array of well-known authors to live audiences. EXPLORE AT THE CASTLE A koinobori is a flag in the shape of a koi carp which is flown in Japan on May 5th for Children’s Day. 1. Print out this sheet. 2. The castle and grounds, tea rooms and shop will be closed until we get the all clear to reopen but we will keep you updated here on the website and will provide more information about the events planned for this season. All tea bookings will be postponed until later this year and we will rebook you as soon as we are able. Chiddingstone Castle is an historic house, accredited museum and an award-winning venue. The Castle is set in 35 acres of Kentish countryside and is home to one man’s extraordinary collection. The castle is open from April to October on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11am to 5pm with last entry at 4.15pm. Our tea rooms are open during these hours and can be accessed without anadmission ticket.
We host events, education groups, weddings and private functions at the Castle throughout the year so please do not hesitate to get intouch.
