CHSU Hosts the First Team-Based Learning Educational Summit inthe Valley
College and University educators and staff members from multiple institutions across the Central Valley were invited to attend the first Annual CHSU Educational Summit in November. The CHSU Educational Summit was the first of its kind in the Valley. The focus of this year’s CHSU Educational Summit revolved around Team-Based Learning (TBL). TBL is a strategy that ensures that learning is learner-centered, active, challenging, and elevated to authentic problem solving, and that teaching is assessment focused, responsive, transparent, and aligned to objective performance. In practice, the TBL strategy consists of pre-learning in preparation for class, in-class readiness assurance testing, application-focused exercise and peer review. Rather than passively listening to a lecture, students are engaged in the learning process before they even step foot in the classroom. “Well designed TBL modules are designed with the end in mind, focusing on what learners need to be able to do at the end of the module,” says Jody Takemoto, PhD, MEd, Associate Professor, Biomedical Education, CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Five workshops were offered during the CHSU Educational Summit, including an introductory course, and specific courses on topics like creating effective TBL modules, improving educator TBL facilitation skills, and evaluating application activities. Participants also had the chance to present their own teaching methodologies during a lunch-time poster session. Facilitated by CHSU faculty, the Educational Summit taught the skills necessary for participants to implement TBL into their own educational institutions and promote a more widespread use of this teaching strategy. And CHSU is leading the way. Four of California’s ten certified TBL Consultants currently hold faculty positions at CHSU, and they are the only certified consultants in the Central Valley. All classes at CHSU are designed to reflect the TBL environment and faculty have been trained on how to structure their course curriculum using TBL. The strategy has proven effective for student success. “Students solve problems, defend their choices, listen to feedback and critique other opinions. There is no other learning modality that provides this opportunity to practice critical thinking so frequently,” said Leanne Coyne, PhD, Professor, Biomedical Education, CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. This Summit provided the opportunity for all participants to fulfill the coursework required for achieving the “Knowledge of the Fundamentals of TBL” certificate, a first level of training in Team-Based Learning proficiency. Over 25 of the participants are now eligible to receive the certificate as a result of participating in the Educational Summit. The 2nd Annual CHSU Educational Summit is scheduled for November 2020. For more information about next year’s Educational Summit, please email Ashley Voorneveld at avoorneveld@chsu.edu.... Read more...*

He has been leading this effort for access to Federal loan programs and applied for our school code when CHSU became accredited by WSCUC. Kevin Hoover and Sandra Acuna in the Office of Financial Aid have been busy preparing to help our current and incoming students navigate the application process and will help our pharmacy students determine the financial aid options that work best for them individually. CHSU will be looking to apply to the US Department of Education to determine eligibility for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the earliest possible time. Local Valley Students Participate in Pre-Med Pathway Bootcamp to Prepare for Medical School The California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM) and the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC) have worked together to create the Pre-Med Pathway Bootcamp directed by Kevin Steed, PhD and Samuel Kadavakollu, PhD, MSc. This free 4-week bootcamp provided pre-medical students of the Central Valley with expert advice to improve their understanding of skills for the entire medical school application process. The list of instructors and facilitators included 17 faculty and staff from CHSU-COM and 2 faculty from surrounding colleges. Students were instructed on specific MCAT sections and unique tips and tricks by Dr. Kevin Steed and Dr. Samuel Kadavakollu, what is a Doctor of Osteopathy with Dr. Krista Lund, improving volunteering and health related job experiences with Dr. Anne VanGarsse, interviewing techniques and feedback with multiple faculty members, personal statement writing with Dr. Michael Conte, admissions Q&A with Dr. Susan Ely, holographic anatomy demonstration, with Dr. Boris Boyanovsky, clinical simulation demonstration with Leslie Catron, RN and Nanami Yoshioka, a Team-Based Learning activity with Dr. Chris Burns and a graduation ceremony to complete the camp. With each session, students were asked what outcomes they hoped to achieve. Some of those included: understanding what it takes to become a competitive applicant for medical school, what areas they needed to focus on and understand the skills they will need and discover what it takes to step into the shoes of a medical student. During the graduation ceremony, the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. John Graneto, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mahboob Qureshi, and the Chair of Biomedical Education, Dr. Chris Burns, all came to share their support and offer a word of advice to the students. Students talked of their amazement of the realistic nature of the camp and left with a profound understanding of the tools they need to use in order to improve their applications and grades. They left with the experiences of what Medical School teaching and simulation is really like. It was an extremely successful and beneficial camp for both the students and the faculty involved....Read more...
