GOTHIC BAR
Inspired by a spectacular grove of Coastal Redwoods in Muir Woods, Cathedral Grove captures the romance and wonder of a natural cathedral of great trees– a mythical environment dedicated to beauty and dreams. Upon Muir Woods creation President Theodore Roosevelt noted that such majesty must be preserved for future generations– the artistry of millennia working within an ancient ecosystem. When President Franklin Roosevelt died just as the United Nations was being formed, delegates from around the world met in Cathedral Grove for his memorial noting that there people had come together to celebrate the harmonious relationship that must exist between mankind and our environment; a place that best embodies our commitment to our natural past and dreams of the future. Within Clifton’s Cathedral Grove lies the Gothic Bar, a shrine to the majesty of nature and the mythology of our cultural heritage. Here you can enjoy handcrafted libations and delicious offerings worthy of this iconic environment. With monumental Gothic tracery and two-story murals depicting Yosemite Valley and Muir Woods, The Gothic Bar evokes a sense of wonder at both the natural history it represents as well as the cultural history inspired by the space itself. This spot is seen by many as the birthplace of modern science fiction, orchestrated by visionaries like Forrest Ackerman and Ray Bradbury when they gathered here in the 1930’s for meetings of the Los Angeles Science Fiction League. Here we celebrate the wondrous collision between the worlds of nature and imagination—a blending that brought together artistic firmament and the wonder of the natural world—finally unconstrained by the laws of nature. Be sure to toast the visionaries who have always inhabited this space by tipping your glass gently to The Bradbury, the bar’s centerpiece, a 4.5 Billion-year-old meteorite that weighs over two hundred pounds.DISCOVER MORE:

The entire bar top is made from a Giant Sequoia that fell in a rainstorm in 2015. Salvaged by the US Department of Forestry, this 1200 year-old tree had created a natural dam in a Northern California river and needed to be removed. We are honored to be able to use this salvaged portion of a Giant Sequoia as pieces of this size and history are thankfully no longer allowed to be felled or removed from their natural habitat except in rare circumstances.DISCOVER MORE:

In the booth areas of the Gothic Bar, Bradbury attended meetings of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy League in the late 1930’s along with luminaries Ray Harryhausen, Forrest J. Ackerman, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard, Leigh Brackett and many other iconic founders of modern Science Fiction. It is this spot that many people claim is the birthplace of modern Science Fiction. The meteorite is part of the Campo del Cielo (Field of Heaven) fall–a fragment of the largest recorded meteorite to impact Earth approximately 4500 years ago in what is now Argentina. It’s comprised primarily of Iron and Nickel and is estimated to be over 4.5 Billion years old—a primordial relic from the creation of our SolarSystem.
Feel free to gently touch The Bradbury and tap your drink carefully on its side in celebration of the blending of science, fiction and the remarkable primordial building blocks of nature!DISCOVER MORE:
Campo del Cielo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campo_del_Cielo * THE BRADBURY BOOTH The Bradbury Booth is the exact location where the Los Angeles Science Fantasy League held some of their first meetings in the 1930’s. Enamored by Clifton’s fantasy environment (and the free Limeade and sherbet– delicious treats for many of the struggling writers!), the Los Angeles’ Science Fiction community coalesced within this location and created what is arguably the entire modern Science Fiction genre in literature, film and television. One can imagine the conversations that took place here—with Star Trek, Star Wars, the Twilight Zone and nearly every other iconic Science Fiction work since that time able to trace its roots to through this spot. It is even said that L. Ron Hubbard founded Scientology here due to a bet he had with Bradbury within Clifton’s!DISCOVER MORE:

BROOKDALE BALLROOM
Reminiscent of the parlors and museums of a previous century, history echoes through the walls of _The Brookdale Ballroom_. LA’s legendary nightlife returns as exceptional performances revive one of the Republic’s most iconic and opulent chambers. Lovingly restored to its original sophistication, the Ballroom provides a window into the past with dancing, cocktails and specialty dining amid décor sourced from natural history museums, gilded palaces and forgotten gin joints. Originally designed to showcase furniture, the Ballroom has always maintained a sense of sophistication. Clifford Clinton used it for his radio broadcasts “The People’s Voice” in the 1930’s, part of his extraordinary efforts to weed out corruption in city government. These broadcasts led to the bombing of Clinton’s home, imprisonment of several police officers and the retirement of the sitting Mayor. At the height of World War Two Clinton transformed the room into The Coral Room, a Polynesian themed dining hall– with a section labelled The Midway after an infamous battle was waged in that part of the Pacific. In 1960 Clifford’s son Don transformed it into the “Gay Nineties Room” owing to its heightened Victorian-esque style. It soon became affectionately known as The Red Room due to its red flocked wallpaper.DISCOVER MORE:
Clifford Clinton’s Broadcasts https://jhgraham.com/2017/10/16/the-angels-take-a-bath/ CURIOSITIES OF THE REPUBLIC WITHIN THE BROOKDALE BALLROOM: * PRONGHORN (_ANTILOCAPRA AMERICANA_) The fastest land mammal of North America, the pronghorn is adapted to the open spaces of the Great Plains and the Western deserts. Reaching speeds up to 55 miles per hour, healthy pronghorn can usually escape from natural predators like coyotes. Although unrelated to the true antelope of Africa, pronghorn are sometimes called antelope due to similarity in appearance. The Antelope Valley of northeastern Los Angeles County was named for the vast herds of pronghorn that oncelived there.

Pronghorn: https://nhpbs.org/natureworks/pronghorn.htm * COYOTE (_CANIS LATRANS_) Incredibly adaptable and opportunistic, coyote thrive in habitats ranging from Downtown Los Angeles to desert plains. The diet of coyotes varies depending on what’s available and include a wide range of plant and animal material. Similarly, in varying circumstances coyotes will forage alone or may cooperatively hunt in packs to take down large prey like deer and pronghorn. The widespread persecution of the larger, closely related wolf has allowed the coyote to expand its range to include virtually all North America. One was seen as recently as March 2019 foraging in Downtown’s trash bins.DISCOVER MORE:
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/c/coyote/ * AFRICAN LION (_PANTHERA LEO_) Once widespread throughout Africa and Southwestern Asia, the lion is now mostly restricted to the savannah and bush of eastern and southern Africa. Centuries of exploitation and persecution by humans has resulted in current wild populations limited to national parks and other protected areas. Male lions have a distinctive furred mane and research indicates that female lions prefer males with the densest and darkest manes. One or two males typically control a pride that includes several females and their cubs. The lion in the Brookdale is a juvenile male who died of natural causes in captivity. We urge everyone to work with organizations like the Shambala Preserve (Roar Foundation), a sanctuary for exotic felines who have suffered mistreatment or neglect located just 40 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles, to raise awareness of the plight of the great cats of the world. Los Angeles is only one of two cities in the world in which big wild cats freely roam—with the Mountain Lion still inhabiting the Hollywood Hills. Mumbai in Indiais

THE MONARCH BAR
Representing the mythology of the West, an informal land of adventure and dreams and community of astonishingly diverse natural and cultural beauty,The Monarch provides a mythical forest lodge in which to enjoy classic cocktails, “Yostemitiki” woodland themed creations, and exceptional wines, beer and dining delights. Named for the last wild Grizzly bear to roam the Golden State, The Monarch pays homage to the state’s natural heritage and commitment to environmental conservation. The bar lies at the base of The Monarch Tree, our enormous artistic re-creation of a Coastal Redwood– the centerpiece of a three-story atrium that transforms the space into a magnificent amphitheater known as Cathedral Grove. The tree serves as an aerial stage for performers and immersive projection experiences and reminds us of the wonder of California’s remarkable natural beauty and the imaginative exuberance of its culture. CURIOSITIES OF THE REPUBLIC LOCATED WITHIN THE MONARCH BAR: * AMERICAN BISON (_BISON BISON_) Commonly known as buffalo, the American bison is a large and shaggy grazing mammal native to the grasslands of North America. In this diorama an American bison, affectionately known as Sage, is depicted on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California, a place they were introduced to in the early 1920s for use in a motion picture and left behind when production ended. Today, a conservancy maintains a small herd of about 200 bison in recognition of their historic cultural importance. The American Bison is the largest living species of land mammal native to the Western Hemisphere. Researchers estimate that vast herds of up to 90 million American Bison once roamed the grasslands of North America’s Great Plains. They were an important resource to native people, providing food, leather and other raw materials. Commercial hide hunting by European settlers decimated the bison population, with a mere 541 individuals remaining when a census was conducted in 1887. Conservation efforts since have increased their number to more than 500,000, most held as stock on private ranches. As few as 15,000 wild, free-range bison exist on public land such as in YosemiteNational Park.

Its tail has a distinctive black patch of fur and populations of mule deer that inhabit the redwood forests of the Pacific Northwest are called Black-tailed Deer. Only males have antlers, which are regrown every year and used in jousting competitions with other males to establish dominance. Deer are an important food source for mountain lions, wolves, and other predators.DISCOVER MORE:

The highly variable diet of black bears includes berries, fungi, insects, fish, birds and mammals. They are mostly solitary, but female black bears typically give birth to 2-3 offspring which remain with their mother for the first year and a half of their lives. Biologists estimate that up to 500 Black Bears now roam Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County.DISCOVER MORE:

The Monarch is an artistic recreation of an existing Coastal Redwood found deep within Muir Woods’ historic Cathedral Grove. The name pays tribute to the famous Monarch Bear, which was captured by newspaper reporter Allen Kelley in the late 19th Century. Kelley was given the task of capturing the last wild grizzly bear of California by his boss William Randolph Hearst. After six months of searching he found the Monarch Bear in the Ojai Valley, Ventura County, near Los Angeles and captured him after tracking him for several days. The Monarch was brought to San Francisco on November 3rd, 1889 and offered to the Menagerie (zoo) at Golden Gate Park. The gift was refused and instead Hearst placed the bear on exhibit at Woodward’s Gardens. Opening day November 10th, 1889 saw over 20,000 people visit the Monarch—beginning his tenure as the world’s most famous bear—a title he would hold for over 22 years. His stardom included becoming the model for the bear on the state flag of California, the poster bear for the rejuvenation of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake, and as the totem animal of the state of California. He was euthanized in 1911– the last wild grizzly bear of California–the very last of the majestic indigenous official animal of the State of California. The tree itself was designed by Andrew Meieran and constructed over two years out of a concrete epoxy mix over a steel frame by Naturemaker, a leading creator of artisan crafted steel art trees. Five skilled artisans hand crafted every inch of the bark and burn area and have created one of the most realistic and authentic representations of a Coastal Redwood in the world.DISCOVER MORE:

The lower portion is a Cottonwood, used in honor of Walt Disney’s Dreaming Tree, the legendary tree on the Disney farm in Marceline, Missouri. It was beneath this tree that Walt would muse about what he called “Belly Botany,” the study of fanciful animals and mythical beasts that lived within young Walt’s imagination. There young Walt’s imagination took hold and—and this became the birthplace of the magical world of Walt Disney. Walt used to visit Clifton’s in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s with his daughters and commented that Clifton’s was a primary inspiration for Disneyland (which was built a full 20 years after Clifton’s opened) with Adventureland and the Enchanted Tiki Room taking specific inspiration from the wonderful fantasy environments of Clifton’s. His daughter Dianne once noted that Clifton’s isn’t “Disneyesque,” but instead, Disney is “Cliftonsesque!” The top potion of the bar is made from a Giant Sequoia that fell in a rainstorm in 2015. Salvaged by the US Department of Forestry, this 1200-year-old tree had created a natural dam in a Northern California river and needed to be removed.
