NAGASH’S FINEST
Nagash’s Finest. By Wudugast. It may be hard to believe but the Ossiarch Bonereapers were first released back in November of 2019 and not “just a few months ago” as my brain otherwise insists. At the time I dreamed of assembling a mighty army of them, but in the time since I’ve painted precisely zero. Last week was Warhammer Fest 2021, and this year – thanks to Covid – it was held online and open to anyone with a computer and an internet connection. Iz Dat Da Dokk? By Wudugast. Let’s be honest, some miniatures are just a bit duff. Take the Bonesplitters Wardokk for instance (which used to be a Savage Orc shaman of some description). Let’s not beat about the bush, it’s past its best. In fact, it’s hard to say exactly when it’s best was. For those unfamiliar the Wardokk is KHIMERIX | CONVERT OR DIE On that note here we have the gang’s brute, the giant genetically modified monster known as a Khimerix. These monsters, described as “flesh-fused chimerae” and “gene-spliced hybrids” are created by the gene-wrights of House Escher as attack beasts, status symbols, gladiatorium combatants and, above all else, proof of their ability as BLACKSTONE FORTRESS: AMALLYN SHADOWGUIDE Blackstone Fortress: Amallyn Shadowguide. Despite being a painter of Games Workshop miniatures for many a long year, and despite the fact that they’re one of the most iconic of the 41st Millennium’s inhabitants, I’ve never actually painted a single Eldar. Time to balance the books, at least a little, in favour of the pointy-earedones.
GHOST STORIES
Ghost Stories – Part 6. By Wudugast. I do enjoy a good pun so discovering that this ghost who flies around hitting people with a bell is called an Extoller was almost enough to make me paint him by itself. This model is intended to serve as the leader of a squad of Grimghast Reapers but as these come in squads of ten and I only ownthe four
NIGHTHAUNT | CONVERT OR DIE This is one of the first models I planned to tackle for Fembruary and so it makes sense, in the topsy-turvy way I go about my hobbying, that she’s one of the very last to be completed. Back when Lady Olynder, the Mortarch of Grief, was first released I worried that she’d be a difficult creature to paint and commented that I felt like I was the only person on earth who didn’t really like her. BLACKSTONE FORTRESS: SERVITOR X-101 As promised the explorers risking life and limb in the darkness of the Blackstone Fortress can now be joined by the servitor X-101. Of course I won’t let the occasion pass to complain that GW really ought to provide us with some more servitor models, there are few things as evocative of the 41st Millennium and the few existing miniatures for them are hellishly old.NAGASH’S FINEST

The source of their power comes from the (presumably magical) aether-gold they found there. You may recall that a few weeks ago I showed you Aghkam Poxspeaker, my Dark Apostle of Nurgle.I’ll admit that, as time passed, I started to feel a little bit dissatisfied but it wasn’t until KrautScientist put in his thoughts that I realised what was bothering me. These cruel and bloodthirsty barbarians were roughly analogous to the KRAGNOS | CONVERT OR DIE Formed primarily of orcs, goblins, ogres, trolls and giants these are the villains of many a fantasy novel – yet mostly these are the thugs and goons who provide a bit of muscle, whilst the evil masterminding is done by someone else. Thus whilst Chaos and Death (and even Order to an extent) can come across as distinctly evil attimes
BLACKSTONE FORTRESS: AMALLYN SHADOWGUIDE Blackstone Fortress: Amallyn Shadowguide.
TERRAIN: 40K
The downside of course is that it’s expensive, it takes up a lot of space and it’s a lot of work to build. Leaving aside the lack of disposable income, which in itself lead to a lot of careful budgeting and saving up, until recently I just didn’t have the room to store such a comparatively massive construction.CORPSE GRINDER CULT
The Lodge of the Flayed King – Part 1. Very much in the spirit of the Goliath WIPs I posted last week here’s a look at some more unpainted Necromundan plastic, this time in the form of my favourite underhive cannibals the Corpse Grinder Cultists. First up I turned my attention to the cult’s initiates (that’s Juves in any othergang).
NECROMUNDA | CONVERT OR DIE We have Betti Banshee – a woman with a sonic scream instead of a throat, Necrana – oldest and most terrible of the Death Maidens, and Cyniss, a mistress of poisons and close confidant of the Matriarch Primus herself. Again however there was the potential to really pushthe boat out here.
ORCS | CONVERT OR DIE Orc Champion. By Wudugast. I’ve no idea what the origin of this old Orc is. He’s been knocking around in my collection, started but not finished, for a good decade at least, possibly longer. The aesthetic of him reminds me very much of the models produced by Rackham for the – sadly defunct and much missed – game Confrontation. KHIMERIX | CONVERT OR DIE On that note here we have the gang’s brute, the giant genetically modified monster known as a Khimerix. These monsters, described as “flesh-fused chimerae” and “gene-spliced hybrids” are created by the gene-wrights of House Escher as attack beasts, status symbols, gladiatorium combatants and, above all else, proof of their ability as LAUKA VAI | CONVERT OR DIE Although I was a fan of the old Dire Wolves I’m not blind to their flaws. Time for them to shuffle off into woods unknown and be replaced by the new dogs on the block.LOOKING UPHIVE
A big part of the appeal of Necromunda (and Warcry, Blood Bowl and so) is the low price of admission to each new faction (Dark Uprising aside of course!). A new gang will set you back somewhere between £20 and 30, not much more than a single character in 40k or AoS these days, or the back rank in a WHFB horde. ORCS | CONVERT OR DIE Orc Champion. BLACKSTONE FORTRESS: ROGUE PSYKERS Floating eerily over the battlefield the Rogue Psykers are another of my favourite models from the Blackstone fortress set. I’ve got all kinds of things I’d like to add to my 40k Ork army, and a few more brutes for my Ironjaws Warcry warband (and speaking of Warcry I reckon that as I have the other three Destruction factions represented by warbands now it’d be fun to put together some Savage Orcs as well).NAGASH’S FINEST
Nagash’s Finest. By Wudugast. It may be hard to believe but the Ossiarch Bonereapers were first released back in November of 2019 and not “just a few months ago” as my brain otherwise insists. Back in the late 2000s I went through a brief flirtation with Wyrd Miniatures and the crazy steampunk world of Malifaux. It never really stuck but it did leave me with a handful of models which are either unpainted or painted in a manner that at the time I mistakenly believed looked good but which, in the cold light of day, was actuallya bit shit.
NIGHTHAUNT | CONVERT OR DIE Ghost Stories – Part 5. By Wudugast. A couple of weeks ago I painted up a warband of Nighthaunt for Warcry. By the time it was finished I had seven Chainrasps, almost enough for a squad should I ever fancy expanding the collection into an Age of Sigmar army. Of course if I wanted to do that I’d need another three, and sure enough here theyare.
THE CHANCES OF ANYTHING COMING FROM MARS… As promised last month I've set myself the goal of adding at least one model to my Adeptus Mechanicus army every month in 2021. AMID THE RUINS – PART 3By Wudugast
The walls of Carngrad continue to rise! With the Untamed Beasts tamed, for the moment, and the Iron Golem well on their way to completion, it’s time for another building. Honestly there’s not much more to add here that hasn’t been said already regarding the last lot. There are still a few more buildings and barricades in the Warcry set to complete, plus I’d like to make some weird, warped Chaos terrain to add to the collection, but in the immediate term we have enough now to get us started playing a game or two. I’d like to finish off the Iron Golem warband next, and after that returning to terrain (and painting some chaotic beasts) will be my key priorities.4 Comments

UNTAMED BEASTS – PART 5By Wudugast
After the most recent additions the Untamed Beasts were almost complete, with only their leader – the fearsome Hearteater – needed to complete the set. Life is keeping me busy at the moment but I didn’t want to stall so close to the final hurdle so I knuckled down and got him finished, ready to lead his followers on a hunt into the wilds of the Bloodwind Spoil. And with that the Untamed Beasts are, if not tamed, then at least fully painted. Here’s the finished warband posing for their traditional group-shot. Being undoubtedly mighty, if not particularly magical, he’ll be my contribution to the March Might and Magic challenge being run this month by Ann’s Immaterium. Full props to the challenge as without it I might easily have let this slip as work and life pressures continue to pile up. It’s still early in the month so perhaps – and I make no promises here – I’ll find the time to tackle someone equally mighty from the Iron Golem side of things, although it may be that the best I can manage is to bash through some more terrain. Watch this space!22 Comments

THE OATHBONES – PART 3By Wudugast
I’ve got quite a horde of Cawdor gangers built up now, and really I ought to be cracking on with painting them, rather than continuing to build more. However that sounds far too much like common sense and moderation to me, especially when I have a holy crusade to launch with which to purge the hive of the sinful, the faithless and the filthymuties.
The release of the Sisters of Battle Arco-flagellants has given me all kinds of ideas for new additions to the gang, not to mention the host of fanatical lunatics that I plan to unleash in their wake. So far I’ve just dipped my toe into the uses I can get from the kit, starting with a few headswaps, and although it’s desperately fiddly I think there’s a lot of potential to be explored here. For the next little while I’m going to keep my focus on Warcry but these have fired my enthusiasm for my little cult again so I’ll look to get back to them soon (and who knows, perhaps I’ll even get some more of them painted!)22 Comments

UNTAMED BEASTS – PART 4By Wudugast
What would the Untamed Beasts be without a beast (allegedly entirely undomesticated) prowling at their heels? Having distracted myself long enough with the Iron Golems it’s time to focus on getting the Beasts wrapped up, starting with the Rocktusk Prowler (or Goat Lion Thing asits often known).
Of course, even a beast wants someone to talk to. Enter the Beastspeaker, wearing a rather fetching Rocktusk Prowler skull helm. Honestly I found her quite tricky to paint and I’m not entirely happy with how she turned out, but she’s done and on the whole I’m satisfied with that. Alas, what with things being busy in so-called “real life” at the moment, I’ve not managed to get quite as much painted for Fembruary as I might have hoped. That said I’ve between this lady and the Iron Legionary I showed previously (an Iron Maiden perhaps?) I’ve managed a least a couple of female miniatures, and without diverting my focusfrom Warcry.
With these two done the Beasts are now almost complete, there’s just the savage Heart-eater left to paint so I’ll get him done ASAP then crack on with more terrain and the rest of the Iron Golems.30 Comments

IRON GOLEM – PART 2By Wudugast
Of course, angry dwarves and hulking ogres are all very well but somebody still has to do all the legwork, and that means if my Iron Golem warband are going to carve out a reputation in the brutal hinterlands of the Bloodwind Spoil I’ll need a few Iron Legionaries to fill out the ranks. I love the look of the big, heavy shields carried by the Legionaries, they look grim, brutal and unyielding. Imagine lugging that around allday!
For the third one however I decided to throw in a bola, as opposed to the other option on the kit – a second hammer, to give the group a bit of range and visual dynamism. Grouped together I think they look even more uncompromising and forbidding – but then, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned on many occasions, I’m a sucker for a phalanx! Come home with your shield oron it…
With these done I just have three more Iron Golem to tackle, whilst the Untamed Beasts are likewise close to completion, so I’ll be aiming to keep my focus on Warcry for the next few weeks and get everything wrapped up.11 Comments

28-MAG; TELLING WAR STORIESBy Wudugast
The second issue of 28-magazine is here ! It’s been a while in the making but it’s been released at last and those of us who’re suffering from withdrawal symptoms at the ongoing lack of the Blanchitsu article in White Dwarf can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Just like the first issue it’s packed to the gunnels with all kinds of dark, strange and wonderful miniatures, some very insightful interviews, beautiful artwork and excellent tutorials. Needless to say I highly recommend it giving it a look whatever your taste in miniatures is (it’s free after all!) but particularly if you’re a fan of Inq28, AoS28 or any of the hobby’s darker and weirder corners. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to put this issue together and deserve all the credit and praise that’s been sent their way – it really is a very stylish and professional-looking production. Possibly driven into some kind of exhausted delirium by their efforts they even invited me to contribute an article, which you can find on page 74, published under my real name Paul Stagg (because it doesn’t say Wudugast on my birth certificate, even though my passport photo is a picture of a bionic skull). The article focuses on adding a background narrative to your hobby – be that painting, converting, playing games or a combination of all three. It’s a subject close to my heart and one that I may well revisit here in the future, especially as I had quite a lot of ideas that I simply ran out of space to cover. I did at least manage to wax philosophical about goliath gangers, tech-peasants and Khornate philosophers, all of which I intend to return my attention to in the coming months. For now though all that’s left is for me to offer a big thank you to the team for putting together another great issue and to recommend that you go and check the magazine out and show them some support. I’ve also been asked to deny once and for all the rumours that I modelled for the front cover, instead you can find my portrait in its proper place – on page 3…14 Comments

IRON GOLEM – PART 1By Wudugast
With work well underway on the Untamed Beasts it’s time to turn my attention to their adversaries, those enthusiastic metal fans the Iron Golem. After all, if we’re going to be able to play some Warcry then we’ll need at least two different warbands – an Orc may be willing to beat up himself if no other adversaries present themselves but a warrior of Chaos will struggle to impress the gods if that’s allthey can manage.
A few months ago I painted the Chaos Dwarf Armatorso
with the short angry man done I turned my attention to the big angry man instead, that most muscular of an already hench warband, the OgreBreacher.
Originally I was wondering about trying to get my hands on another to kitbash into a Goliath ‘zerker, although since there is now an official model (flawed but fixable in my opinion) that’ll no longer be necessary. However just in case anyone is thinking of using the Breacher for something in the Underhive, here’s a size comparisonanyway.
And here he is next to his little buddy. Anyway, that’s the long and short of it – now I just need totackle the rest!
