Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, she studied painting and worked as a cartographer and illustrator for the British government there. THE TRANSMUTATION OF CREATIVE REUSE Designers turn existing materials or products into new works through the process of reuse transformation. More than a strategy for sustainability, reuse transformation not only diverts waste from landfills, but also challenges our preconceived notions of value and utility. In this lecture, designer and educator Hans Tan uses examples from THE PEOPLE’S RECEIVER The People’s Receiver. In the 1930s, the Nazi party relied heavily on propaganda in order to spread its political and social views across Germany under the Third Reich. While this spread of ideas was most infamously carried out using military power, the government was also able to find its way into the homes and heads of the German people in SUZIE ZUZEK FOR LILLY PULITZER Upcoming Exhibitions. Interaction Lab. Previous Exhibitions MODEL 500 TELEPHONE, HENRY DREYFUSS Henry Dreyfuss’s earlier Model 302 was a beautiful sculptural object, but it had usability problems. The triangular profile of the handset caused the device to turn when cradled against the shoulder—the design didn’t account for people’s intuitive desire to talk hands-free. Dreyfuss addressed this issue with the Model 500,introduced in 1949.

Grandson of industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper, son of Congressman and New York City Mayor Abram Hewitt, and youngest brother of Sarah and Eleanor Hewitt, he “devoted himself chiefly to the public service and the interests of the family estate.” REBAJES: A LIFE MADE OF COPPER Rebajes: A Life Made of Copper. In 1922, Francisco Torres arrived in New York on a steam ship from his hometown of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, at the age of sixteen. Featuring over 190 objects spanning antiquity to the present from the extraordinary collections of Smithsonian Libraries and Cooper Hewitt, the exhibition reveals how designers apply the COOPER HEWITT: THE TYPEFACE BY CHESTER JENKINS The new typeface, Cooper Hewitt, is a contemporary sans serif, with characters composed of modified-geometric curves and arches. Initially commissioned by Pentagram to evolve his Polaris Condensed typeface, Chester Jenkins created a new digital form to support the newly transformed museum. “Developing this typeface specifically for Cooper Hewitt has been enormously gratifying,” said Jenkins. THE PEOPLE’S RECEIVER The People’s Receiver. In the 1930s, the Nazi party relied heavily on propaganda in order to spread its political and social views across Germany under the Third Reich. While this spread of ideas was most infamously carried out using military power, the government was also able to find its way into the homes and heads of the German people in CONTEMPORARY MUSLIM FASHIONS Contemporary Muslim Fashions is the first major museum exhibition to explore the rise of the modest fashion industry. Modest fashion refers to garments that are both highly fashionable and provide sufficient body cover to address cultural concerns for modesty.
