WALK: HORNER VALLEY, EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK The Horner Valley and its surroundings, including the Vale of Porlock and Exmoor’s highest point Dunkery Beacon, lies within the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate, once owned by the Acland family. nestles by Horner Water, ideally situated for excursions on horseback or foot. HOW TO SPOT SIGNS OF WILDLIFE IN BRITAIN Barbed wire snags the fur or wool of passing animals. Turn left below Attermire Scar, passing scree slopes to reach Victoria Cave and then Jubilee Cave. Turn right at the road then left along a sealed track below Winskill Stones where islands of limestone pavement and twisted hawthorns distract from longer views to the iconic Three Peaks of Ribblesdale. Listen for the burbling call of curlews and look for northern wheatears WALK: THIXEN DALE, DEEP DALE AND WATER DALE, NORTH 3. Open Dale. Follow the field down to the bottom with the hedge on your right. Pretty soon the lovely Ray Dale and Open Dale come into view.
