WHAT IS A CRANNOG?
The crannog reconstruction which forms the focal point of the Scottish Crannog Centre was built by The Scottish Trust for Underwater Archaeology. It was created to promote the research, recording, preservation and interpretation of Scotland's underwater heritage. The earliest loch-dwelling in Scotland is some 5,000 years old but peoplebuilt

OAKBANK CRANNOG
Oakbank Crannog is one of 18 crannogs in Loch Tay, Perthshire located off the village of Fearnan on the north shore. Dating to the early Iron Age some 2500 years ago, it was originally built of timber, utilising piles (stilts) driven into the loch bed to create a platform above the water supporting a settlement. As an accredited museum, we are committed to preserving, studying and displaying our collections and making them accessible to all. Thanks to a grant from Museums and Galleries Scotland, we gave our museum a well-deserved facelift in 2019. Excavations of Oakbank Crannog began in 1980 but very few of theartefacts

The 21st Century Crannog Community look forward to seeing THE CELTIC TRADITION OF HANDFASTING Put very simply, Handfasting is the practice of couples committing to each other by having their hands tied together with braid, or something similar, and exchanging rings and vows in a traditional non-religious ceremony. Knots are often tied in the braid at the making of each vow. When the Handfasting is over and the braids areremoved, the
