She describes the stages of grief that must be endured before acceptance or peace is felt. The speed of movement through the stages is very much reliant on the type of individual you are and your level of self awareness. THE ROAD TO EMOTIONAL INJURY AFTER RECOVERY For some athletes, especially those who are young, being injured can trigger emotional or mental health issues. It can also unmask repressed anxieties or fears that sports have enabled the athlete to control. Once the participant is out of the game, they may be unable to cope. Athletes may face anxiety, depression, eating disorders orsubstance
FALLING AT THE FINAL HURDLE, TRANSITIONING TO LIFE AFTER SPORT Falling at the final hurdle, transitioning to life after sport. Year after year, professional athletes train to be the best at what they do. Day after day, they put in blood, sweat and tears in an effort to become number one. They aspire to one day stand on the top tier of the podium, proudly representing their country while holding their gold ASH BARTY: THE POWER OF TIME OFF Ash Barty: A gun junior player who got mentally burned out, and so took time off to have fun playing cricket and to give herself a break from the intense bubble of world tennis. She is now the French Open champion and goes into Wimbledon as the favourite. Ash had to take the brave step of doing what she felt was right for herself. KATH KOSCHEL: THE POWER OF KINDNESS Kath runs The Kindness Factory, a charity that encourages people to show simple acts of kindness to themselves and others. She set the charity up in 2015, after a stint as operations manager for NSW Cricket. Before that, Kath, aged 24, was playing her fifth game for the NSW Breakers, after achieving her dream of becoming an elitecricketer.
WHO AM I IF I DO NOT SWIM ANYMORE? Anonymous: Who am I if I do not swim anymore? “I will never retire – I will just keep doing Masters”. So I blindly said in my early 30s, when zipping seamlessly between open age and masters competitions was a breeze. Now in my mid 40s, those open age races are near impossible and suddenly retirement is a real thing.
