Natalie Portman has fired back at activist Rose McGowan , who blasted her for faux activism stemming from the gesture of wearing a cape at the Academy Awards featuring the names of snubbed female directors.
McGowan said in a Facebook post Tuesday that Portman’s gesture was hollow and asked her to “stop pretending you’re some kind of champion for anything other than yourself.” McGowan said Portman has “worked with two female directors in your very long career- one ofthem was you.”
Portman’s Oscars outfit featured a cape embroidered with the names of Greta Gerwig (_Little Women_”), Lulu Wang (_The Farewell_), Lorene Scafaria (_Hustlers_), Marielle Heller (_A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood_), Mati Diop (_Atlantics_), Melina Matsoukas (_Queen & Slim_), Alma Har’el (_Honey Boy_) and Céline Sciamma (_Portrait of a Lady on Fire_).RELATED STORY
ACADEMY RESPONDS TO COMPLAINTS ABOUT OSCARS IN MEMORIAM SNUBS -UPDATE
“Some thoughts on Natalie Portman and her Oscar ‘protest,’” McGowan’s Facebook post said. “The kind of protest that gets rave reviews from the mainstream media for its bravery. Brave? No, not by a long shot. More like an actress acting the part of someone who cares. As so many of them do.” Portman responded today with her own statement. “I agree with Ms. McGowan that it is inaccurate to call me “brave” for wearing a garment with women’s names on it. Brave is a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who have been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks, under incredible pressure. “The past few years have seen a blossoming of directing opportunities for women due to the collective efforts of many people who have been calling out the system. The gift has been these incredible films. I hope that what was intended as a simple nod to them does not distract from their great achievements. “It is true I’ve only made a few films with women. In my long career, I’ve only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times – I’ve made shorts, commercials, music videos and features with Marya Cohen, Mira Nair, Rebecca Zlotowski, Anna Rose Holmer, Sofia Coppola, Shirin Neshat and myself. “Unfortunately, the unmade films I have tried to make are a ghosthistory.
“As Stacy Smith of USC has well documented, female films have been incredibly hard to get made at studios, or to get independently financed. If these films do get made, women face enormous challenges during the making of them. I have had the experience a few times of helping get female directors hired on projects which they were then forced out of because of the conditions they faced at work. “After they are made, female-directed films face difficulty getting into festivals, getting distribution and getting accolades because of the gatekeepers at every level. “So I want to say, I have tried, and I will keep trying. While I have not yet been successful, I am hopeful that we are stepping into anew day.”

Sarah on February 13, 2020 6:12 am She calls the women testifying against Weinstein brave ? A wannabe actress , a wannabe model and some other wannabes who did ally why could to be famous by any means necessary. Brave were perhaps those who risked their reputation by saying this was transactional and the relationships consensual ( Miss Salinas and the actress friend of MIss Man) brave are the women who go after things without trying to sleep with someone to get there easily .This lady is so HollyweirdReply

Anonymous on February 13, 2020 5:49 am As a man, there is nothing more amusing to watch than a feminist who tears down other women. This is why the U.S. has never had a female president — not because men don’t vote for women, but because women don’t support their own. You know who’s keeping women down, Rose? You are.Reply

spiderterry84 on February 12, 2020 9:22 pm Odd, as I recall, Natalie sure seemed like she was acting brave when she was calling attention to her little cape, but I guess she had to backtrack after getting criticized by someone she couldn’t easily brush off. Say what you will about McGowan, but it’s obvious Natalie knows it wouldn’t be smart publicity to rip into someone who could be a poster girl for #MeToo (at least on this particular issue). And I’ve seen the other comments here, so I know some will say, “But Natalie tried to get female directors for movies, so you’re not getting the whole picture.” Except I am getting the whole picture because I understand the definitions of both “tried” and “did.” People wanting to give Natalie credit for *trying* to accomplish something goes back to what I said about the cape a few days ago: wanting credit for doing nothing. “Trying” can be good, but it’s nowhere near the same as “accomplished.” *The more youknow!*
And, y’know, I didn’t know it at the time, but I saw in one of the other comments that Natalie has produced her own movies and only one had a female director. I had just approached this from the perspective of “major celebrity” and not “producer.” If that’s true or anywhere close to true, then she is way more hypocritical than I thought she was since she literally had the power to make the big decision. Now, perhaps the best person still ended up with the job, but that goes back to another way she was criticized: focusing entirely on the gender of the nominees and openly not considering talent or ability (y’know, the things that actually count). ‘Course, when she’s producing the movie, I guess Natalie does consider those things since it’s her money on the line.Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 8:40 pm WTF happened to Rose McGowan? Did she get hit over the head with a brick or fall down a lot as a child? Maybe a spell backfired on the set of Charmed. The one where she traded places with Shannon Doherty and Shannon Doherty became nice and McGowan became the BIATCH! Just a note to fans of Charmed, that never happened. They never appeared on the show at the same time. I’m just making it up to highlight my point, McGowan is a first class BIATCH! She went from outspoken advocate for women to a zealot who has to be the only person that cares and the only one to speak up for womens rights. Nobody else is allowed because Rose will out them as phony. That makes her a completedouche.

Mike Bailey on February 13, 2020 5:15 am I absolutely agree! Rose McGowan sounds like an angry old woman.Reply
*
Peter C on February 12, 2020 8:35 pm Just from the top of my head, Portman wanted Lynne Ramsay for Jane Got a Gun and Patty Jenkins for Thor 2, both were hired yet neither ended up directing these films. She has also championed Elizabeth Meriwether who wrote the script for No Strings Attached and is friends with director darling Greta Gerwig who was her co-star twice (No Strings, Jackie) and whose directorial achievements Portman also praised. So while I get the “she only had one feature directed by a woman” argument, that’s not the whole picture, especially once we factor in her non-feature work.Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 7:34 pm In my opinion , Natalie Portman is rightfully Hollywood royalty. An incredible history of doing one great role after another. Class act that takes the high road by even responding. Since Miss Portman sets the example by taking the high road , I too , will not even mention the other party by name. I will say however , in ten years , Natalie Portman will have won at least one other Oscar.Reply

Florida Mom on February 12, 2020 6:25 pmDear Rose McGowan:
Honestly, you shouldn’t throw stones and/or hurl insults at Natalie Portman! As a fellow human being and as a woman, I believe that we should “lift each other up” and be grateful for whatever each of us has to offer or can give, however big or small that gift may bemeasured.
We should never call out someone else just for trying to help. When you shout out, “look she didn’t do enough!!! or “how dare she join “my” cause/battle because she doesn’t measure up to my standards! that just hinders change. Think of how many people and/or women that won’t even try to voice their opinion now out of fear of being ridiculed by people like Rose McGowan. Aren’t we supposed to be raising each other up as females? All Rose’s actions remind me of are the bullies she is constantlycalling out.
I say to Natalie Portman: Thank you and Bless you for the attention you have brought to the Female cause. It is way more than I myself can say I have done to make a difference! I appreciate and value anything that any person feels they can give, no matter how big or small that may seem. In the end, even the very smallest gesture may have the biggest impact! Who are we to judge?Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 5:14 pm These two deranged idiots deserve each other. They should go on tour in a dinner theater revival of WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 5:13 pm That’s what happens when an intelligent person like Portman reads for filth someone who is only after attention like McGowan. What happened to her is horrible and hopefully her attacker will get a fitting punishment however none of that gives her the right to consider herself some sort of an authority on all causes related to women. I mean what has SHE done to help female directors in the industry ? Oh, nothing ? Then maybe stop attacking the ones who are atleast trying.

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 5:44 pm McGowan is just bitter and a hypocrite for attaching Portman, who at least is taking matters into her own hands by directing, as well as producing, films and drawing attention to the female directors who were ignored by The Academy. McGowan should be supporting her not making herself look like the jealous, catty Hollywood hasbeen she clearly is. What did she do to draw attention to female directors besides attack Portman, one of her female industry counterparts?Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 5:04 pm In a 30 year career, she has only done 1 movie for a female director (not counting herself). Let that sink in.Reply
*
Anonymous on February 12, 2020 5:45 pm She has quit quite a few movies as a result of no female directors so….you aren’t seeing the whole pictureReply

Bizcuit on February 12, 2020 4:52 pm Rose McGowan needs to focus on her own life instead of that of others.Very Trump.

Me on February 12, 2020 6:11 pm AMEN!!! SAY WITH YOUR CHEST!!! She’s the one who’s all talk. Bashing another woman for bringing some attention to the situation. Thumbs up Rose. Keep up the good hating fuckin bullyReply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 4:47 pm Rose is trash always looking to pick a fight with a bigger name in order to get some attention for herself. However, she is right about Natalie in this regard. Natalie has produced 11 movies and the only one that was directed by a woman was the one she directed herself. Yes, she did hire Lynn Ramsey to direct that awful western but then Lynn had a strop and couldn’t be bothered to show up and so Natalie had to hire a man to actually show up and do the job. I suspect that scared her off ever hiring a female director in future. That’s the problem with women. They’re too emotional. Just like Catherine Hardwicke who was notorious for bursting into tears and having total meltdowns over nothing right there on the set in front of horrified cast and crew.Reply

Anonymous on February 13, 2020 1:50 am but it ok for male actors, directors to lose their shit and still get things done on set, get paid?Reply
*
Anonymous on February 12, 2020 4:42 pm While I do believe McGowan’s passionate advocacy stemmed from her being a true victim, it now seems to be fueled by narcissism, making her a bully and counterproductive to the movement.Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 8:41 pm ENOUGH IS ENOUGH…DIRECTORS ARE HIRED BECAUSE THEIR FILMS HAVE MADE MONEY…CONSISTENTLY…FRANCIS COPPOLA HASNT MADE A PICTURE FOR YEARS….IS HE A WHITE MALE DIRECTOR WHO IS ENTITLED.? I think not..he hasn’t had a hit for years….that’s why he isn’t directing!!!!Reply

Elian on February 12, 2020 8:15 pm Agree. She’s a bitch. She judge others based on her own hidden agenda. Hypocrite and attention seeker.Reply

Anonymous on February 12, 2020 6:05 pm I agree more of a bully to me. Hating someone is at least making notice to the landslide in Hollywood. But yet Rise decide to bash ANOTHER WOMAN. Wow. Very hypercritical to me. She have no class and she about nothing but attention. Took 100 thousand out of court. But yet want justice lol. Seem like she wanted a financial come than REAL JUSTICE. Who take a settlement over justice!??? Oh Rose McGowan does. Have phone but instead decided to hit Twitter up for popularity votes instead of a simple call. CELEBRITIES lol. Go figureReply
