I know the posts have been few and far between on my blog lately because, well, life happens, and most of the time that’s a lot more fulfilling than the internet. Sorry, internet, but these last few months have been about reconnecting to life and things that make me happy. That being said, I spent a good month on hiatus from planning related things and basically did everything on the fly. I noticed that when I have a lot on my plate, I tend to toss the analogue planning and go purely digital. It’s a lot easier to stay on track with plans and tasks with my husband being synced to the same apps that I’m using, and I can better delegate tasks because I can visually clear it off my list, instead of just crossing it off or ticking it off my list – this creates a lot less visual traffic, and I can clearly see what tasks still need to be done. When I did return to planning, I decided on two things: 1. My bullet journal is for me, not anyone else, so my spreads and everything else, functioned for me, and I wasn’t going to do things to make it pleasing to social media streams. 2. I would use only one book and one pen. To date, I have been doing this since July, and apart from losing my trusty pen in September, I’ve since gone back to the one pen for October. So prior to this, I was contemplating on what notebook to use. I have been a religious user of the Uni Jetstream 101 ballpoint pens, and I’m pretty sure I bought all the remaining stock at every Daiso shop in Brisbane *smirk* I’d used the Leuchtturm1917 notebooks, Moleskine, Rhodia, etc., and to be honest, I was concerned that the monetary outlay for these books was going to throw my budget out of whack. Having a young family to support doesn’t afford you with many luxuries, and to be honest, when I used the more expensive, boutique-y style notebooks, I was reluctant to take it around with me for fear of it being battered around in my bag, or having Squish accidentally splatter food on it. I used an A6 pocket sized notebook prior to my planning hiatus, and as much as I loved the small format, I needed space, and I’ve always loved soft cover notebooks. My two requirements was that the notebook had to be an A5 size and didn’t weigh my bag down like a tonne of bricks. Along came the A5 Ciak Mate dot grid soft cover notebooks via the lovely people at LarryPOST. Back in May,
I had the fab experience of meeting Erin and Jen during my stay down in Sydney, and they gifted me with a wonderful B6 Ciak Dotted notebookwith my
name debossed on it. I loved the paper btut wanted something a big bigger in size. The A5 Ciak Mate dot grid soft cover notebook ticked all the right boxes for me at a fraction of the price. Each notebook retails at $AUD20, which compared to the other brands is anywhere from$AUD10-15 cheaper.
_DISCLAIMER: The Ciak Mate notebooks were gifted to me by LarryPOST. All opinions
of the product in this post are my own, and I did not receive any money for this review._ A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CIAK BRAND… Ciak (pronounced CHAK) have been producing handmade notebooks in Florence for nearly 40 years! The covers are made from bonded leather, which is a reconstituted leather to give it the look and feel of leather without the natural variations of genuine leather. The paper is 85gsm ivory coloured premium recycled paper, acid free, pH neutral, chlorine free, fountain pen friendly, and most importantly, FSC certified (which means they respect the environment, so top marks fromme for that!).
The Ciak Mate notebook itself measures 14.5 x 21cm (approximately an A5 size notebook). It has 128 pages, and comes in blank, ruled and dot grid rulings, whatever takes your fancy. The ruled pages have lines that are 7.5mm, with 25 lines per page. The dot grid has 5mm spacing with 27 grids across and 41 grids down, which extend to the edges of the pages. All pages are unnumbered. There is no ribbon bookmark, or elastic strap, or back pockets. It’s the bare minimum when you compare it to premium notebooks, but if you’re a bullet journal newbie (or a seasoned one, who is after no frills) who wants to experience luxurious paper without the million dollar price tag, you definitely can’t go past this notebook. The bookmark, elastic straps, and back pockets are simple hacks that you can easily add to your notebook – just have a look on Pinterest! A comparison of the Ciak Mate (brown cover, unnumbered pages) with a soft cover Leuchtturm1917 (black cover, numbered pages): Notebook specs aside, here’s a sneak peak at how I used it as abullet journal.
You’ll notice that a lot of my bullet journal pages will be very minimalistic, and that’s how I’ve always preferred my bullet journal. I’m more of a function over form planner, but I still very much appreciate the planners who have lovely decorated pages. A simple monthly log for July, with events, appointments, meetings, birthdays, etc. on the left side, and tasks on the right side. The boxes running along the edge of the right page is where I would mark off as each day was completed; it’s something to keep me on track of what day I was up to. Hah, yes, it got to that point! Another simple monthly log for August. I needed a grid visual, as opposed to a linear visual, to get an idea of where my time was going. I tried my best to not have to use lines, because I just don’t have the time or patience to do elaborate layouts. I haven’t returned to this for September or October, but something to consider. The next few pictures are examples of my dailies. One thing that I absolutely love about the Ciak Mate notebook is that the dots extend to the edges fo the pages, which gives me the freedom to use that extra space for more writing or sometimes as a reference title for mycollections.
This is a two column daily page, which just followed on from one day to another. I didn’t pre-plan the spacing for each day, it was basically rapid logging for each day every week. This was a pre-planned spread, which I liked for a little while, but then it got very cumbersome for me because I had to plan for time to actually set it up! Plus, there was a lot of space sometimes where I didn’t have much to write about, and I don’t like wasting space. It looks very pretty though hehe This idea actually came from Jen at LarryPOST, when we were
discussing how we used our bullet journals. She currently uses the Ciak Smartbook notebook, and she
would list her tasks, appointments, meetings, etc. on the left page, and any notes on the right page. I did something similar, except my left page is divided into two columns – one for tasks, appointments, meetings, birthdays, etc., and the other for tasks for the day. I loved the fact that I can see distinct separations for my day, because there are some days where everything is a jumble, and when I’m trying to look for one tiny note I made on a particular day, it takes me ages to find! So having that tasks section to one page has been really helpful. You’ll also notice that I’ve written the pages in pencil. I lost my a pencil case somewhere along my travels, and I ended up just continuing with pencil for the rest of the month. Why I didn’t just crack open a new Uni Jetstream pen, I have no idea. Maybe I was living in hope that the one I lost would eventually show up. Kind of like that time I found my Ciak Mate notebook in the oven after Squish had put it in there while I wasn’t looking… or was it me who absentmindedly put it there in my working parent haze… And lastly, this is my handlettered memories calendar for July. It was just a small daily creative outlet for me, daily being the operative word *cough* This was handlettered using UniPin fineliners, and I loved that there was very, very minimal ghosting (see through) on thenext page.
Oh and for the pen enthusiasts out there, this is a pen swatch of the pens that I had on hand. Just a quick note about fountain pen users, there is a bit of a wait time for some inks to dry. You can see th Lamy Safari inks smudged and that was after 30 seconds of writing it. The Ciak Mate notebooks are definitely a great alternative to some of the luxury brands out there, and to be honest, their paper quality is better than some out there (at least, in my opinion). If you’re looking to start a bullet journal or even something to supplement your current planning needs, let this review be an example that you don’t have to spend a small fortune to make a notebook (ANY notebook!) functional for your productivity. PLANNER EXPERIMENTALISTS – @BUMBLEBUJO 11 September 2017 by Dee9 Comments
So if you’ve been living under a rock (or inundated with too much to do!), you’re missing out on the marvel that is Kim of @bumblebujo . I’ve had the absolute honour of featuring this superbly talented Aussie bullet journalist on my humble little blog. There are countless bullet journalists who have amazing artistic abilities and create these wonderful spreads in their journals, and Kim is no exception. She makes each spread so ridiculously eye catching and aesthetically pleasing, you just have no excuse not to be organised! Just try and stop yourself from obsessively scrolling up and down this blog post staring dreamily at all of her bujo spreads *wipes drool* ------------------------- Hi everyone, I’m Kim and I’m a bullet journalist. I’m the person behind @bumblebujo on Instagram. Thank you Dee for inviting me to share my journal and some of the reasoning behind my creative processes. Instagram is great for appeasing the eyes but it doesn’t always leave much space for the explanations behind the pictures. I’ve always been one of those people who buys a new diary at the beginning of each year, then I proceed to fall off the wagon a few months in! I’ve tried many different diaries throughout the years, always tending to gravitate towards the pretty ones, but none of them ever quite ‘fitted’ me. There was always something missing, but I just didn’t know what it was. I didn’t realise what I needed until I came across the Bullet Journal system recently. It was love at firstsight.
As surprising as it is to some people, I am a bullet journalling newbie. I only discovered it in July 2017. Like most people, I first stumbled upon bullet journalling while I was randomly browsing Pinterest late one night. I came across a beautifully hand drawn spread, it piqued my interest so I clicked on the link and it opened up a whole new world for me! From that moment on, I fell into an aesthetic bullet journal abyss! I resurfaced a week later having binge watched and frantically reading all the blog posts about bullet journalling. I couldn’t get enough. The more I saw, the more I knew that this system was exactly what I’d been searching for. After my extensive research, I was full to the brim of ideas on how I wanted my journal to be. It’s not necessary to pre-plan your bullet journal, but let’s be honest, the majority of the people who are seduced by the bullet journal system are all planners by nature. I wanted my journal to be a clean and minimalistic functional tool, but at the same time, I also wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing so it would encourage me to keep coming back. If it can make me come back and use it, then it’s achieved its purpose. For me personally, a planner needs to be both functional as well as pretty. That is why I like to keep my spread layouts fairly minimal, less clutter means I can focus more easily on all my tasks at a glance. However, I also wanted to incorporate some sketches into the spreads to give some points of interest. I love to draw, being able to draw and play with pens makes the process more enjoyable. If it’s enjoyable, it means I’ll continue to keep doing it, which would in turn, keep me motivated to continue using the journal. When creating a spread, I like to draw on inspiration from all the talented bullet journalists out there. When I first started, I would look at people’s spread layouts which I love, and then think how I could tweak it to suit me. That’s how I generally come up with new layouts, just by thinking what I could do differently, while at the same time still keeping it functional for me. I try to draw up my weekly spread over the weekend so it’s ready for the new week, this doesn’t always happen, life sometimes gets in the way. But that’s the beauty of a bullet journal, it never judges, it just sits there awaiting your next move. So far, each time I’ve decided on a layout which I wanted to use for the week, the end result is almost always completely different. What you envision in your head doesn’t always correlate onto paper. Majority of the time, the layout I start sketching with in pencil rarely ends up the same at completion. This is what I love most, this ever evolving creativeprocess.
Bullet journalling is so versatile, you tweak it to suit your needs at any given time. Some people utilise their monthly, weekly and daily spreads, some people bypass the weeklies and only do monthlies and dailies. For me, I prefer to use only the monthly and weekly spreads. My days are not busy enough to warrant drawing up a daily for it. But in saying that, I will have some days which are more hectic than usual. During those days, I will draw up a daily spread to capture allmy notes and tasks.
A bullet journal is fun, you can get very creative with it and do what works for you. However, at the end of the day, it is a productivity tool. Keeping this journal has definitely kept me on task and improved my productivity. I use to write down my to-do lists all over the house, or just keep in at the back of my mind. Clearly this wasn’t the best method because I used to always lose my notes or forget the things I had to do. But being able to write all my tasks down in one place has made me more aware of them, and it motivates me to complete my tasks just so I can colour in my boxes! One of the biggest struggle for a newbie is trying to remember all you designated key codes. I constantly had to flip back and forth between my Key page and my current weekly spread when rapid logging. I saw on Pinterest an ingenious idea of creating a flip key card. I decided to create a little flip card to put in the front of my journal which I can keep open while rapid logging. This saved so much time. I constantly get questions like “how can you be bothered making your own spreads” or “how do you find the time to draw in your spreads.” They are fair questions, questions which even I have asked myself when I first began! Being a mum of 3, my life can get quite hectic. When would I find the time to sit down and have a cup of tea, let alone draw up such intricate spreads? But to be honest, if you love something enough, you’ll make the time for it, just like any other hobby. Schedule the time into your daily or weekly routine, eventually it’ll become habit. I generally do my bullet journalling work in between the kids naps or at night. It’s my ‘me’ time and I find that drawing really relaxes me and leases the endorphins. If anyone is interested in starting their own bullet journal, here are a few tips which I’ve learnt along the way. I’d researched everything, from which notebook to buy to what stationery supplies I needed. But I can honestly say that ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO MAKE A START IS ANY NOTEBOOK AND ONE PEN. All the other extras are lovely to have, but you don’t necessarily need to have them. I’d made the mistake of buying pens and washi tape because other bullet journalists had them, but I’ve yet to use any of these supplies. All I use is my new notebook and a bunch of my old trusty micron pens. JUST START AND START SIMPLE. Instagram and Pinterest can be a plethora of inspiration, but it can also be very daunting. So many beautiful spreads created by so many talented people, you just want your journal to look just as amazing as theirs. But it doesn’t have to be. DON’T PUT PRESSURE ON YOURSELF, LET YOUR JOURNAL STYLE PROGRESSORGANICALLY.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES. So many people are so worried about mistakes, they just don’t make a start at all. Mistakes are fine, it adds character. If you create something that you aren’t happy with, just turn the page and move on. Use it as a lesson on how to improve in the future. No one is perfect and there is certainly no bullet journaling police hiding in the corner waiting to bust you. My last advice is JUST HAVE FUN! It’s supposed to be functional and fun. When the system is no longer fun for you, you’re doing it wrong. Take a step back, regroup, and then come back when you’re ready. It’ll always be there, waiting for your return. I hope I’ve been able to inspire a few of you to start bullet journaling, or to come back to the system if you’ve attempted it in the past. It truly is a unique system, tailored to fit every individual’s needs. Thank you for sticking til the end of this post, it’s a little winded, but I’m just so passionate about the system. If you would like to see more spreads, feel free to check me out on Instagram @bumblebujo . ------------------------- So how many times did you scroll up and down staring dreamily at all these spreads?! Right?! =) Thanks again, Kim, for sharing with us your unique style and sharing such invaluable advice about starting and maintaining a bullet journal. Go show Kim some love and follow her on Instagram xdq
PLANNER EXPERIMENTALISTS – @SAMIMAKES 16 July 2017 by Dee 1Comment
Well, hello, beautiful world! I know the Planner Experimentalists posts have been pretty scarce lately, but I wanted to get the ball rolling again with an amazing find from the planner community (Thanks, Lauren! Don’t know what I’d do without you!). I’ve always been a bit of a voyeur when it comes to decorated planners, and I must admit, I’ve become a massive fan of Sami’s planner and what she offers in her fabulous subscription boxes at Planners Anonymous . So glad you could carve out some time to write this little piece to share with the planning community, Sami! Happy reading, folks! ------------------------- Hi I’m Sami and a planner girl, crafter, photographer, and mum of two beautiful little children. I’ve always been a creative, I’ve found if I don’t have a creative outlet things get a little bit crazy. My daughter Indi (4) even told me the other day she wants to be an artist like mummy, talk about melting my heart. I’ve been crafting for as long as I can remember, although planning is a lot newer to me. I’m currently learning to letter and do calligraphy and I’m going back to my high school days where doodling was fun and encouraged. I was drawn to planning when I saw I could combine my love of crafting and cardmaking into one little space where every week I get the chance to start fresh and theme it up. After trying a few planner subscriptions I couldn’t find designs I loved and wanted to use every month so I’ve just created my own called Planners Anonymous . HOW I SET UP MY PLANNER I have to admit, you Bujo girls are amazing! I struggle when I lose my boxes – so I’m a Happy Planner girl at heart. I have a fair few Kikki K planners although I design my own inserts so they include boxes. If you look super close there’s actually a dot grid inside them, I’m pretty average at writing straight, actually my writing isn’t amazing so I love sharing my before the pen spreads. I have different sections in my planner for my calendar, business, creative ideas, family and health, and decorative items like stickers etc. I love stamping and using stickers in my planner as I love colour when I’m planning – which is hilarious because in my photography business I’m super neutral. I’m a pink girl at heart although growing up I was a bit of a tomboy at times and loved blues. Actually any shade of sunset I love, how all the pinks, purples, golds and blues all combine are amazing. MY DECORATIVE PLANNING TIPS * I put all my appointments in my phone first – this may seem counter intuitive but it means that I can decorate my weekly and month spreads around what I have going on in my calendar and then add the appointments back in on top. * Don’t be afraid to go big or experiment. The thing I love about planning is that if it doesn’t work one week I have a brand new fresh start the next week. You never know, your next accident could bethe next big thing.
* Use a good quality paper – I use a minimum of 120gsm paper for my planner pages. I’m thinking about doing a completely creative journal at the moment and I’ll probably jump up to 200gsm so I can lightly watercolour on the pages. ------------------------- Thanks for all the lovely words of advice, Sami, and don’t you just want to decorate your planner with those wonderful goodies?! =) Well, until the next Planner Experimentalists, folks, happy planning!dq
