BEYOND LIFE: CUTHBERT'S BODY DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE Beyond Life: The Body of Cuthbert The Wonder-Worker of England. The story of Cuthbert does not end at his death. In 698, Cuthbert's tomb on Lindisfarne was reopened and it was discovered that his body had not decomposed in any way. THE KEEPER OF THE SHRINE DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE (From the Rites of Durham, 1530s). Opening the Shrine. His job was to look after the Holy Shrine of St Cuthbert. Whenever someone important wished to offer prayers or offerings at the shrine, and asked to see it, the Clerk of the Shrine, would immediately inform the Keeper. NORMAN CHAPEL DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE The Norman Chapel is among Durham Castle’s most important spaces and, constructed around 1080, the city’s oldest building. Although it has been sometimes taken for the undercroft, (the space under a church or chapel) rather than the chapel itself, close reading of the sources suggests that this was probably the main chapel and not a crypt or utilitarian space associated with it. THE HARRYING OF THE NORTH DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE The Harrying of the North refers to the brutal slaughter and pillaging of Northumbria in 1069-1070 by the army of William the Conqueror. This is thought to have been devastating to the extent that 100,000 people starved to death. The Harrying of the North was a response to the strong resistance to Norman rule shown by the Northumbrian people. ST CUTHBERT'S SHRINE DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE St Cuthbert’s shrine was covered with a richly-embroidered cloth, which was raised on special occasions to expose the lavishly decorated shrine itself. The shrine’s gilt cover depicted Christ on a rainbow on one side and Christ as a baby being carried by Mary on the other.
