Ecozon@ is a scholarly journal published by the University of Alcalá and GIECO (Spanish Research Group on Ecocritical Studies) of the Franklin Institute, both of the University of Alcalá, together with EASLCE (European Association for the Study of Literature, Culture and the Environment). Each issue has a general section and a thematicsection.
INTO THE FRAY: A CALL FOR POLICY-ENGAGED AND ACTIONABLE As European countries strive to meet their targets in support of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by UN member states in 2015, the importance of integrating all knowledge communities in coordinated responses to sustainability challenges becomes an increasing priority. ECOCRITICISM, BIOPOLITICS, AND ECOLOGICAL IMMUNITY Ecocritics tend to think of environmentalism as a form of resistance against the anthropocentrism of Western modernity. Such a view stands in contrast to biopolitical theory, which sees modernity in terms of a naturalization of the human and a generalized effort to increase the productivity of life that cuts across species lines. ECOMORPHISM, TOWARDS A CULTURE OF THE LIVING. VIEW FROM Abstract From the point of view of trees—a symbolic observation post—artists open breaches between plant, animal and human worlds, engaging with processes of acculturation. Ecomorphism—from oikos as habitat and morphé as form—is the result of a species’ adaptation to its environment. At the edge of worlds, the museum is not a closed place; it is a “perch”, an essential ORNITHOLOGICAL PASSIONS OF AMERICAN POET CELIA THAXTER American poet Celia Leighton Thaxter (1835 – 1894) was shaped by both environmental beauty and destruction she witnessed in her New England community. A brief education among Boston’s literary elite launched her creative career, where she ECOLOGY, CULTURAL AWARENESS, ANTI-RACISM AND CRITICAL This paper aims at presenting a critical approach to teaching ecological, postcolonial and ethnic minority topics in the (foreign language) classroom, describing the need to interrelate these three issues in both research and teaching. John Parham teaches Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Worcester where he is also Associate Head (Research) for the Institutes of Humanities andArts.
OUT OF AFRICA: ECOCRITICISM BEYOND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE This essay is an attempt to present a broader view of ecocriticism in Africa. KAREEMA’S ECOLOGICAL SELF IN SALWA BAKR’S “THIRTY-ONE This paper deals with “Thirty-one Beautiful Green Trees”, a short story written in Arabic by Salwa Bakr, the Egyptian critic, novelist and author. It highlights the self’s identification with nature; opening one’s self up to the multifarious surrounding life forms, even when one lives in an urban setting. And since, as neurologist Antonio Damasio has shown, cognition is directly linked to emotion, and emotion is linked to the feelings of the body, our physical environment influences not only how we feel, but also what wethink.
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND THIRD WAVE ECOCRITICAL Key words: environmental justice, globalization, indigenous peoples, third wave ecocriticism Using films such as Babel directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñartu, or novels such as Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko can raise consciousness on environmental justice issues and the consequences of globalization and free trade agreements for different communities around the world. “THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ‘AWAY’”: AN INQUIRY-BASED The explosion of electric and electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the major environmental challenges of our time. Only a small amount of e-waste is properly disposed of or recycled, with most e-waste ending up in landfills or incinerators, or being exported to developing countries where it represents an even greater hazard to both the environment and human health and life. CLIMATE FICTION AND THE ETHICS OF EXISTENTIALISM The purpose of this article is twofold: Existentialism as a philosophical discipline and ethical reference point seems to be a rare guest in ecocriticism. Based on an analysis of Lyra Koli's climate fiction Allting Växer (2018) this article argues that existentialism has something to TEACHING IN THE GARDEN: SCHOOL GARDENS AS A SPACE FOR School gardens as settings for learning outside the classroom are becoming increasingly popular. They allow students to learn in an authentic way as they engage in a variety of activities and materials. More importantly, they also represent a powerful place and tool for environmental education as students are not only exposed to nature but also gain positive environmental experiences. LANDSCAPES OF EXTRACTION AND THE MEMORIES OF EXTINCTION IN Focusing on Guzmán's essay films Nostalgia de la luz (2010) and El botón de nácar (2015), in this article I argue that the ambiguity between reference and abstraction that pervades the visual representation of landscape in late capitalism offers a productive way to map out the processes of extinction caused by continual historiesof extraction.

Hip-hop is one of the most successful forms of global cultural production today. Since its emergence in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City, it has spread around the world and exerted a considerable impact not only on pop culture, but also on social debates around race, class, language, nationality, gender, and a range of otherissues.
