Updated: February 27, 2020 The house could rise as soon as Thursday if all government bills pass third reading. Shaughn Butts / Postmedia, file Share Adjust Comment Print Alberta’s deficit will decrease by $200 million this year, bringing it to $6.8 billion, according the UCP’s 2020 budget releasedThursday.
Projected total debt is expected to climb to nearly $88 billion by 2023. However, that is down from the $93 billion that was projected inthe fall.
The government is forecasting $49.98 billion in revenue against $56.04 billion in expenses. FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS “We are not projecting a boom time” Finance Minister Travis Toews said at a news conference prior to tabling the budget. “The volatility is extreme.” -Personal income tax revenue: $12.57 billion, up 6.3 per cent fromprior year
-Corporate income tax revenue: $4.54 billion, up 6.9 per cent -Resource revenue: $5.09 billion, down 24 per cent -Investment income: $2.63 billion, down 25 per cent -GDP forecasted to grow 2.5 per cent, up from 0.3 per cent last year -Price of oil projected at 58 USD a barrel (WTI)VAPING TAX
Vaping products in Alberta will be slapped with a 20 per cent tax in an effort to curb teen vaping. The tax will be applied to pens, refillable and pre-packaged cartridges, products like flavouring and nicotine solutions, and e-liquids — including cannabis liquids — sold in Alberta or toAlbertans online.
HEALTH
The province is promising to reduce surgical wait times with a $500-million strategy to shift some services to rural health facilities and independent clinics. The move, announced in Thursday’s provincial budget, will see the government spend roughly $400-million over three years on renovations to rural facilities including new operating rooms and contracting out less complex procedures such as cataract surgeries. The other $100-million in funding will go towards capital projects for Alberta Health Services (AHS) run facilities.EDUCATION
Funding for K-12 education from the province remains steady at roughly $7.2 billion, but “own-source” reserve funding from school jurisdictions will jump approximately $111 million in 2020-21, which could include relying on rainy day funds, facility rentals or vendingmachine profits.
POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION Total operating expenses for Advanced Education went from $5.5 billion to $5.1 billion in Budget 2020, unveiled Thursday. In 2018-19, schools funded 43 per cent of operating expenses and government funded 58 per cent. By 2022-23, that will shift to 48 per cent from post-secondary institutions and 52 per cent governmentfunding.
HOUSING
Provincial funding of $68 million over the next three years for new affordable housing projects is currently on pause as the program undergoes a review of where to allocate the money, the government said in its release of the 2020 budget. There wasn’t any new funding allocated for affordable housing in the three-year fiscal plan, but the province offered more details on the previously-announced $353 million for affordable housing and socialsupports.
The funding will go toward 1,117 affordable housing units, 1,197 units for seniors and 500 shelter spaces. Teachers, others in public sector rally at legislature in responseto...

They even opposed the oil industry so see where we are today. The whole blame belongs on the shoulders of the NDP party. reply 13 replies 5 12share
