ELECTRICAL 101
Electrical 101 - Electrical information for the home and office including switches, outlets & plugs, ballasts, troubleshooting, light bulbs, basic electricity. OHMS LAW - ELECTRICAL 101 Voltage, current, resistance, and power can be calculated using ohm’s law. Below are the formulas for these calculations. At a given voltage when resistance increases, current decreases. When resistance decreases, current increases. The chart below left shows theOUTLETS AND PLUGS
A receptacle is a device that supplies power to an electrical load through a cord and plug. Common household receptacles are rated for 15 and 20 amps. 15 and 20 amp plugs will fit into a 20 amp receptacle. 20 amp plugs will not fit into a 15 amp receptacle. The most common receptacle is a duplex which actually contains 2 receptacles.OPEN NEUTRAL
Open Neutral Wiring. In an electrical system, ground and neutral are connected together in one location only, at the neutral point. This connection is either at the power company transformer or in or near the main electrical panel of the dwelling (see Electrical Circuits).. The voltage on a neutral wire is normally 0V (volts) on a livecircuit.
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT 3-WAY SWITCHES Test a 3-Way SwitchTurn off power to the switches at the circuit breaker and using a tester, make sure power is off. Remove the two 3-way switches so you can access the switch terminals. The wire connections do not have to be removed. Using a continuity tester, check continuity between the common (black) terminal and each of the traveler terminals (brass colored) of each 3-way switch.4-WAY SWITCHES
4-way switches have four terminals each with two pairs of travelers (one set usually black and one set usually brass color). A four switch configuration will have two 3-way switches, one on each end and two 4-way switches in the middle. In the diagrams below, the FLUORESCENT BALLASTS Fluorescent lamps use a ballast which transforms line voltage to a voltage to start up and operate the lamp (s). Newer fluorescent ballasts are usually rated for both 120 volts and 277 volts. Some are rated for only 120 volts, others for only 277 volts (used in commercial environments). BALLAST WIRING
Grounding is usually automatic if the light fixture is grounded properly. A ground wire from the power source should be connected to a light fixture. A metal ballast mounted to the metal light fixture will automatically ground the ballast. If a ballast has a ground terminal on it, a ground wire should be connected to it. Fluorescent Ballasts. REPLACE 4 LAMP 2 RAPID START BALLASTS WITH 1 INSTANT START Light Fixtures with Two Ballasts. A 4 lamp fixture with two rapid start ballasts can be replaced with one 4 lamp instant start ballast. As seen below, connecting the 4 lamp instant start ballast to the four lamps can be a bit confusing. This is because the wire colors on the ballast and the lampholders do not match up on two of the connections.ELECTRICAL 101

Appliances with high power consumption can use up most of the capacity of a 15 or 20 amp circuit. They could cause an overload when combined with other appliances and trip the circuit breaker. Wire connectors are used to connect two or more wires together. There are many types of wire connectors, the most common are twist-on.IDEAL Industries brand twist-on wire connectors are the most commonly used and will be featured in this article.Twist-on wire connectors are available in many different color-coded sizes to allow for different wire gauges and number of wires.PHOTOCELLS & TIMERS
Electrical 101. Photocells and timers are switches that turn on and off automatically. Photocells are commonly used to control lighting. Timers are used to control fans, water pumps, irrigation controls, etc. Photocells and timers have a wattage rating. Do not exceed theFLUORESCENT LIGHTS
Fluorescent lights contain a gas that produces invisible ultraviolet light (UV) when the gas is excited by electricity. The UV light hits the white (phosphorus) coating inside the bulb and produces light. Incandescent bulbs are connected directly to line voltage through alight fixture.
CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Circuit breakers protect a circuit from overloads and short circuits. When the current exceeds the rating of the breaker, it will trip. Circuit breaker ratings for household use are typically 15, 20, and 30amps.
DIRECT-WIRE SINGLE-ENDED LED TUBE LIGHTS For single-ended direct-wired LEDs, line and neutral are connected to the lampholders at one end of the fixture. If shunted lampholders are used in the fixture, they must be replaced with non-shunted at one end of the fixture. Connecting line and neutral to a shunted lampholder will cause a short circuit (line and neutral are shorted together). Tubes of this type can not be reversed in a fixture. Similar sized wire connectorscan be used.

CFL BALLAST WIRING
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for the home have a built-in ballast at the base. In commercial buildings CFLs are commonly used in recessed lighting and use a separate ballast to power the lamps (bulbs). Commercial line voltage mostly uses 277 volts to power the lighting circuits. Most newer CFL ballasts operate on 120V to 277V. TROUBLESHOOT GARAGE DOOR OPENER Look for spider webs over the sensors. Check for proper sensor alignment. Someone may have accidentally bumped one of the sensors out of alignment. Check for loose wire connections on the motor unit. Check for loose wire connections near the sensors. Since the sensors use low voltage, sometimes the wires are improperly connected near thesensors.
