ENGLISH CYCLES
20″ aero road frameset. This one is a little different – I have done a LOT of riding on my Bike Friday, so am very familiar with 20″ (451) road bikes. That is what was requested here, along with some aero features. A full length aero seatmast would have reduced the intended compactness of this bike, so I created a custom stainlesssteel
RIMS (AND EXAMPLE BUILDS) The M50 clincher rim is also great for gravel bikes due to being wide, hookless and tubeless at a very light weight. WEIGHT: 330g (M50) PRICE: $975/rim. NoTubes Alpha 340. This is a very versatile rim, being light but strong and able to be run as a standard clincher or with a tubeless tire with NoTubes sealant. I rode with Jeff back in the pre-pandemic days of NAHBS 2019.. Hopefully will get to ride with other people again some time soon! In the meantime, Jeff is all set for long solo rides without needing to stop anywhere, since his frame features four bottle cage mounts and internally brazed ‘hidden’ bosses for a framebag – he requested two size options custom made by Kaibab Customs. CUSTOM BUILD PROCESS Custom build process. Why might an English frame be right for you? There is a proliferation of custom frame builders, especially in Oregon, but it seems to me that many are focused on the aesthetic and old-school styling in their creations. SHLOMY’S ALL-ROAD BIKE Shlomy’s all-road bike. Call it gravel, call it all-road, groad, the name doesn’t matter – Shlomy asked me to build him a fast bike with room for 35mm tires. Verena’s e-bike. Only the third e-bike I have built, but super happy with how this one turned out! Shimano offer 160mm crank arms for the STEPS mid-drive motor, which is a good length for this rider andallowed
LUCAS’ ROAD DISC FRAMESET Lucas’ road disc frameset. Lucas asked me to build him a fast road bike, and was interested in having an integrated front end to allow for fully hidden cables and hoses. We originally wanted to use a full Enve system for this, with their new integrated fork, headset andbar/stem.

Design philosophy. Every builder brings a certain philosophy to their creations, I thought it might be useful to share a little of mine: Fit is key: Both fit for the rider and fit for purpose. With a custom build there is no constraint around incremental sizing or fixed angles – my process starts with locating the contact points (handlebars, saddle and bottom bracket). That mini seatpost is secured into a custom drawn aero section seatmast. An aero downtube and drastically ovalised toptube complete the front triangle. For ease of travel and adjustment, we went with mechanical disc brakes. JIM’S SUPER COMMUTER Jim’s super commuter. Jim wanted a bike for all-year, all-weather riding, that could be used for his commute and group rides. He also needed some extra comfort due to suffering with issues with his hands. We settled on a Gates belt drive, Shimano Alfine Di2 build, for a durable, weather-resistant drivetrain, with 35mm tires for comfort and CUSTOM FOLDING KICKBIKE Once folded, there is an additional set of dropouts on the seattubes for the wheels to be attached, keeping everything together. Matt’s V3 disc. Matt wanted a fast road bike, and liked the V3 design with a carbon ISP and headtube insert. He also inquired if it would be possible to run all the hoses/wires fully internally. As it happened, FSA had just released their ACR system, which uses a special upper headset bearing, bearing cover and stem to route the front hose AUGUSTO’S GRAVEL BIKE Augusto’s gravel bike. Augusto asked me to build him a gravel capable machine, and after discussing various options we ended up with a bike similar to my pink bike. The headtube is a custom tapered unit to accept external Chris King headset cups for the 1-1/4″ tapered Enve Gravel fork. There is an integrated seatmast, which is custom* custom bikes »

NEIL’S V3 DISC FRAME Neil’s frame has clearance for 30mm tires, a T47 BB shell to allow for full internal routing of the Di2 cables and the rear hydraulic hose. Syntace X12 dropouts have a custom modification to allow the Di2 wire to exit right at the back (with thanks to Darrell at Llewellyn for the inspiration on that feature). With beautiful paint appliedby...

STAINLESS ROAD FRAME This rider asked for a classic road frame, built in stainless and shiny! The tubing is a mixture of Reynolds 953, Columbus XCR and custom formed 316. Laser engraved logos were added prior to the tubes being joined. A Chris King headset secures the Enve fork, which is topped by a custom made stainless steel stem, with machined stainless spacers to perfectly...Read More

TYLER’S ROAD BIKE
Tyler’s bike is a classic road build from me – compact frame, carbon fork, rim brakes. The geometry was created to give the right balance of handling and stability based on his experience with previous bikes. A full SRAM Red AXS eTap group takes care of the drivetrain and brakes, with Zipp wheels to match. The paint is by Colorworks and the final weight is...Read More

YUNAN’S V3 CAMPY EPS Yunan asked me to build him a fully custom frameset, and decided upon the V3 composite frame format, along with an aero steel fork and a one-piece stem/steerer. Direct mount brakes were requested, with the rear caliper positioned under the chainstays. With the bike being shown at NAHBS 2019, we were able to get one of the first Campagnolo Super Record 12spd EPS groupsets. A couple of custom parts were...Read More

KEN’S STAINLESS ROAD DISC Ken came to me with some very specific requests for his build – challenging me to figure out some firsts for me, namely a stainless steel disc brake frame, and a stainless integrated seatmast. He was able to give me a good sense of how he wanted the bike to handle, which along with his fit numbers enabled me to meet those design requirements whilst also eliminating toe overlap. As we were workingon...

JOHNNIE’S FGC
Johnnie asked me to build him a travel bike to fit the same as his Shand, but packable for travel. So we came up with a Folding Gravel Concept design, using a US-made carbon fork from HIA Velo to allow for 40mm tires. The rear dropouts are from Bear Frame Supplies in the UK, with a 12mm thru axle and replaceable derailleur hanger. They have the shape I needed to add the FGC pivot at the top for the...Read More

STEFAN’S V3 FRAMESET Stefan asked for a V3 custom frame for a classic rim-brake road bike. We opted for a Columbus carbon fork, with an oversize headtube allowing for inset bearings. Internal routing is included for gear and brake cables, and Paragon Machine Works dropouts provide a direct mount hanger for the rear derailleur. The paint is by Colorworks, with Stefan coming up with a neat little ‘V3’...Read More

PROJECT RIGHT #6
The latest Project Right bike features the modular hubset first used on Gary’s build. But this time with a singlespeed freewheel and front and rear disc brakes. The Gates beltdrive keeps the drivetrain quiet and smooth, with the frame design meaning no split is required for belt installation. Shimano XTR calipers are used – the rear is unmodified, but the front is adapted to a custom mount to...Read More

TRIPLE THE FUN
